The intersection of digitalization and sustainability is reshaping the tourism industry, with digital platforms playing a transformative role in optimizing travel experiences while simultaneously influencing economic inclusivity, labor dynamics, and environmental responsibility. This paper explores how Industry 4.0 technologies—such as artificial intelligence (AI), big data, blockchain, virtual reality (VR), and the Internet of Things (IoT)—are integrated into digital tourism platforms, assessing their dual impact on sustainability and market structures. The study develops a conceptual framework around five key dimensions: market power and digital dependency, AI-driven automation and workforce transformation, innovation and digital inclusion, sustainability innovations, and data security and governance. While digital platforms enhance personalization, operational efficiency, and eco-conscious travel, they also reinforce economic disparities, monopolization, and regulatory challenges, raising concerns related to SDGs such as SDG 1 (No Poverty), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), SDG 10 (Reduced Inequalities), SDG 12 (Responsible Consumption, and Production), SDG 13 (Climate Action), and SDG 16 (Peace, Justice, and Strong Institutions). The study highlights the need for equitable governance frameworks to mitigate risks associated with AI-driven monopolization, algorithmic bias, and data privacy violations while ensuring digital accessibility for small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs). The findings contribute to ongoing discussions on platform economics, digital governance, and sustainable tourism transformation, offering policy and managerial implications for fostering an inclusive and environmentally responsible tourism industry. This study examines the complex relation among environmental taxes, productive capacities, urbanization, and their collective effects on environmental quality in Africa, drawing on two decades of data from twenty African countries. It situates the study within the broader discourse on sustainable development and economic growth, emphasizing the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC) framework to examine the relationship between economic development, characterized by urban expansion and increased productive capacities, and the adoption of environmental taxes amidst the continent’s diverse economic and environmental environments. Using advanced econometric techniques, including the Cross-Section Augmented Autoregressive Distributed Lag (CS-ARDL) model and the Dynamic Common Correlated Effects Mean Group (DCCEMG) estimator, the study addresses data challenges such as cross-sectional dependence and slope heterogeneity. The results provide important insights into the dynamics of environmental quality in relation to economic and urban growth and the role of environmental taxation. The study proposes tailored policy strategies aimed at strengthening sustainable development initiatives in line with international agreements such as the Paris Agreement and the Sustainable Development Goals. These strategies advocate for a nuanced application of environmental taxes and the promotion of productive capacities to enhance environmental sustainability across the African continent. This paper aims to optimize a pulsed electrophoretic deposition (EPD) process for TiO2 films. This is accomplished by determining the optimal configuration of the coating parameters from a robust optimization perspective. The experimental study uses a composite central design (CCD) with four control factors, i.e., the initial concentration (x1 in g/L), the deposition time (x2 in s), the duty cycle (x3 in %), and the voltage (x4 in V). The process responses that should all be maximized are the photocatalytic efficiency of the thin film (De) and three critical charges, which characterize the adhesion failure, i.e., LC1: the load at which the first cracks occurred; LC2: the load at which the film starts to delaminate at the edge level of the scratch track; and LC3: the load when the damage of the film exceeds 50%. This paper compares the robust optimization design of the EPD process using two methods: the robust design of processes and products using the stochastic frontier (RDPP-SF) and the surface response and desirability function methods. The findings show that the RDPP-SF method is superior to the response surface–desirability method for the process responses De and LC2 because of non-natural sources of variation; however, both methods perform comparably well while analyzing the LC1 and LC3 responses, which are subjected to pure random variability. The parameters setting for the process robust optimization are met in run 25 (x1 = 14 g/L, x2 = 150 s, x3 = 50%, and x4 40 V). Full article

This study examines the dynamic relationships between digitalization, environmental tax revenues, and energy resource capacity within the framework of the Environmental Kuznets Curve (EKC), focusing on their combined impact on environmental quality. It employs a cross-sectional augmented autoregressive distributed lag (CS-ARDL) approach, an advanced technique for complex panel data that is specifically designed to address issues of cross-sectional dependence and slope heterogeneity inherent in panel data analysis. The research covers 88 countries, including both low- and middle-income countries (LMICs) and high-income countries (HICs), to understand how digitalization, as a driving force of the Fourth Industrial Revolution, interacts with environmental taxation and energy resource management to affect greenhouse gas emissions. The results reveal distinct effects of environmental taxes and energy capacity on environmental quality, with marked differences between LMICs and HICs. In HICs, technological progress, especially in information and communication technology (ICT), is found to contribute significantly to environmental quality. For LMICs, the effects are less evident, and the findings suggest the need for tailored strategies in environmental policy and energy management. By providing empirical evidence on the differential impacts of digitalization and energy policies in different economic contexts, this research enriches the environmental economics discourse. It highlights the need for policy frameworks tailored to specific contexts that effectively balance economic growth with sustainable development goals, thereby providing insightful implications for achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In the context of an increasingly digitized global marketplace, this study seeks to shed light on its adoption in developing countries, focusing on Morocco. Applying logit, probit, and conditional mixed-process probit models to a sample of 807 Moroccan firms, we identify key factors that influence e-commerce adoption. The results show that younger, innovation-driven firms and those with a highly educated workforce tend to adopt e-commerce more readily. However, digital skills required in hiring do not significantly affect adoption, suggesting a complex relationship between digital skills and e-commerce use. The results also show that firms that are active on digital platforms and engage in innovative practices are more likely to adopt e-commerce. Therefore, this study argues for the need to improve digital skills training and for firms to establish a presence on digital platforms and promote innovation. On the policy front, the study suggests the promotion of supportive policies such as financial assistance, improved Internet infrastructure, and robust regulatory frameworks. As an important starting point for future research, these findings underscore the complexities of e-commerce adoption in Morocco and can guide further research, particularly in the context of similar emerging economies. The platform economy has emerged as a transformative force in various industries, reshaping consumer behavior and the way businesses operate in the digital age. Understanding the factors that influence the adoption of these platforms is essential for their continued development and widespread use. This study examines the determinants of economic platform adoption in Tunisia by extending the widely used unified theory of acceptance and use of technology 2 (UTAUT2) model with a privacy calculus model. By applying the partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) technique, the research provides significant insight. The results highlight the critical influence of factors such as performance expectancy, habit formation, trust in technology, perceived risk, privacy concerns, and price value on users’ behavioral intentions and actual usage of the platforms. These findings provide a deeper understanding of the dynamics surrounding the adoption of the platform economy in developing countries and offer valuable insight for stakeholders. By leveraging this knowledge, stakeholders can foster an inclusive digital ecosystem, drive economic growth, and create an environment conducive to the widespread adoption and use of the platform economy in developing countries. Industry 5.0 is a new phase of industrialization which focuses on humans, resilience, and sustainability. The importance of the research on Industry 5.0 has grown considerably and includes a range of different themes. Using a large corpus of data from Scopus, this study conducts a bibliometric review with the aim of providing a holistic overview of the research on Industry 5.0. We review 300 publications on Industry 5.0 to identify their theoretical foundations, research trajectories, and main topics, as well as to propose new research orientations. Our review is based on the integration of a co-citation analysis, historical direct citation analysis, and co-occurrence analysis. We found that most articles on Industry 5.0 have been published during 2020–2023 and focus mainly on India, China, and the United States. IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics, Sustainability, and Applied Sciences are the most significant journals publishing research on Industry 5.0. Sustainable development, human-centricity, smart manufacturing, and 6G are the most frequent concepts in the Industry 5.0 domain. Full article

Information and communication technologies (ICTs) are an integral part of our environment, and their uses vary across generations and among individuals. Today’s student population is made up of “digital natives” who have grown up under the ubiquitous influence of digital technologies, and for whom the use of ICT is common and whose daily activities are structured around media use. The aim of this study is to examine the impact of ICT use and digital skills on students’ academic performance and to explore the digital divide in France. Data were collected through face-to-face questionnaires administered to 1323 students enrolled in three French universities. Principal component analysis, a non-hierarchical k-means clustering approach and multilevel ordered logistic regression were used for data analysis and provide four main findings: first, poor investment in ICT affects students’ results; second, the ICT training offered by universities has little impact on students’ results; third, student performance improves with the innovative and collaborative use of ICTs; fourth, the acquisition of digital skills increases students’ academic performance. The results show that the digital divide still exists, and this raises questions about the effectiveness of education policies in France. They suggest also that organizational change in universities is essential to enable an exploitation of ICT. Full article

Titanium dioxide thin films immobilized over treated stainless steel were prepared using the pulsed electrophoretic deposition technique. The effects of process parameters (deposition time, applied voltage, initial concentration, and duty cycle) on photocatalytic efficiency and adhesion properties were investigated. To optimize the multiple properties of the thin film, a response surface methodology was combined with a desirability optimization methodology. Additionally, a quadratic model was established based on response surface analysis. The precision of the models was defined based on the analysis of variance (ANOVA), R2, and the normal plot of residuals. Then, a desirability function was used to optimize the multiple responses of the TiO2 thin film. The optimum values of applied voltage, catalyst concentration, duty cycle, and deposition time were 4 V, 16.34 g/L, 90% DC, and 150 s, respectively. Under these conditions, the decolorization efficiency of tested dye solution reached 82.75%. The values of critical charges LC1, LC2, and LC3 were 5.9 N, 12.5 N, and 16.7 N, respectively.
