Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

As Guest Editors, we are pleased to announce a Special Issue of Modelling entitled “Advances in Solid Mechanics: Analytical, Computational and Experimental Approaches to Modelling.”

Solid mechanics has long been a cornerstone of engineering science. It provides the conceptual and mathematical tools for understanding how materials and structures behave under complex loading conditions. The analysis of solid bodies continues to play a key role in modern engineering, particularly in fields such as mechanical, aerospace, civil and biomedical design, where geometric complexity, heterogeneous materials, and multiscale behaviour interact in subtle ways.

Although nonlinear phenomena are the subject of much research interest, linear problems involving complex geometries or intricate boundary conditions remain far from trivial. Advanced studies on metamaterials, architected solids, and microstructured components are exemplary in this regard: even when linear assumptions hold, their effective behaviour emerges from geometry-driven mechanisms that challenge traditional continuum formulations. Moreover, the design and modelling of these systems are inherently interdisciplinary, drawing ideas from applied mathematics, materials science, physics, and computational mechanics.

Furthermore, in recent years, the scientific community has also faced the growing need to describe problems that are inherently nonlinear, where simplified assumptions no longer apply. These nonlinearities may appear due to different causes, such as large displacements and rotations, related to material behaviour involving plasticity, hyperelasticity, or creep. They often emerge through contact or fracture processes and, more realistically, from the simultaneous combination of several of these effects. Such interactions make the accurate modelling of solids a remarkably challenging task.

This Special Issue aims to collect original research that advances analytical formulations, computational strategies, and experimental studies focused on both linear and nonlinear problems in solid mechanics. The scope covers, among other topics, the following: beams, plates, and shells; thin-walled and lattice structures; metamaterials; buckling and stability; contact and fracture; plastic and viscoelastic effects; composites and biomaterials; biomechanics; and structural optimization.

Application-based studies are welcome if they are grounded in solid theoretical or numerical foundations.

By encouraging diverse viewpoints and integrating analytical, computational, and experimental perspectives, this Special Issue seeks to promote interdisciplinary dialogue and to share new insights into the modern frontiers of solid mechanics.

Manuscripts can be submitted until the deadline. All submissions that pass pre-check are peer-reviewed. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal (as soon as accepted) and will be listed together on the special issue website. Research articles, review articles as well as short communications are invited. For planned papers, a title and short abstract (about 250 words) can be sent to the Editorial Office for assessment.

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere (except conference proceedings papers). All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a single-blind peer-review process. Modelling is an international peer-reviewed open access semimonthly journal published by MDPI.
