Special Issue Information

This issue is devoted to the ways music functions and adds meaning to film by exploring examples of film and film music from all periods of film history, national or international. Film music, whether diegetic or nondiegetic, interacts with other cinematic devices, such as narrative, plot, setting, acting and characterization, dialog, cinematography, editing, costumes, lighting, and color. Composers seek to capture the appropriate mood and emotional needs of the scene, draw attention to certain narrative devices, acknowledge the rhythm of the editing and movement within the images, and help support or add meaning to the narrative, whether seen or unseen. Composers must also address the genre and style of filmmaking, help create a sense of reality or fantasy, and achieve an inner musical logic, while fulfilling the demands of the filmmaker. Contributions to this issue may consider the genesis and structure of the music and the film, but will also explore how film and music interact to achieve a complete artwork. Film and music scholars are invited to contribute to this issue, with the aim of meeting at the intersection of music and film.
