MDPI is honored to partner with the Department of Chemical Technology, Faculty of Science, Chulalongkorn University, Thailand, to co-organize an Academic Publishing Workshop. This workshop convenes domain experts and early career researchers to examine evidence-informed strategies for advancing scholarly communication in biodiversity, environmental science, and cognate disciplines. Through interactive, practice-oriented sessions, participants will cultivate essential competencies—including scientific manuscript development and artificial intelligence in scientific publishing. This collaboration underscores the shared dedication to fostering interdisciplinary research integration and supporting rigorous, globally impactful scholarship of MDPI and the Department of Chemical Technology, Faculty of Science, Chulalongkorn University.

Dr. Nuttapol Pootrakulchote opened the session by introducing the MDPI team to the audience, together with Prof. Dr. Sirilux Poompradub. The opening remarks were then delivered by Prof. Dr. Sirilux Poompradub, representing the Head of the Department of Chemical Technology, Faculty of Science, Chulalongkorn University. In her address, she emphasized the importance of scholarly communication and academic publishing in advancing both academic excellence and professional development. She highlighted that this event officially marked the opening seminar course of the department for the current semester. Prof. Dr. Sirilux encouraged all participants to actively engage in the session by paying close attention to the presentations and asking as many questions as possible, in order to maximize the benefits for both their current research projects and future manuscript submissions. She noted that publishing a research article involves more than simply writing a paper; it also requires effectively communicating research findings to the intended audience. She concluded by warmly thanking MDPI for organizing the event and acknowledged MDPI’s continued support in guiding students and researchers through the processes of manuscript preparation and submission, as well as in enhancing their understanding of the role of artificial intelligence in scientific publishing.

Prof. Dr. Sirilux Poompradub, representative of the head of Department of Chemical Technology, Faculty of Science, Chulalongkorn University, delivered the opening remarks for our training workshop. She expressed her appreciation to all participants attending the MDPI Thailand Academic Publishing Workshop and emphasized that academic publishing extends beyond manuscript writing to include ethical practices, appropriate journal selection, effective responses to reviewers, and clear research communication. The faculty was honored to host the session and welcomed the practical guidance shared by the speaker to help improve submission quality and avoid common pitfalls. She encouraged participants to actively engage, ask questions, and apply the insights gained to strengthen their current and future research work.

In the opening session, Dr. Juthathip Poofery, Regional Journal Relations Specialist and Editorial Team Leader, delivered an introduction to MDPI. Her presentation covered the fundamentals of Open Access (OA) publishing and emphasized the continued growth of OA at both global and national levels in 2025. She also outlined MDPI’s core values, development, and key milestones. Additionally, she introduced MDPI’s Institutional Open Access Program (IOAP) and related initiatives. To foster future collaboration, she highlighted the MDPI journals most frequently published in by researchers from the Department of Chemical Technology, Chulalongkorn University.

The second session was shared by Dr. Krit Inthajak, MDPI’s Regional Journal Relations Specialist, with the topic “How to Write Scientific Papers”. This session comprises how to prepare literature reviews before deciding to write a manuscript, the contents on the front matter, main text, and back matter. Graduate students who took interest on this lesson asked which section should be written first. We suggested that all manuscripts should be familiar with the literature review of their research trend first before moving on to other sections. However, if the authors already have their results ready, they can write the results along with comparing their findings with their literature review.

The final session, titled “Artificial Intelligence in the Scientific Publishing Industry,” featured a presentation by Ms. Ploy Assavajamroon, Regional Journal Relations Specialist in MDPI’s Bangkok Office. She provided an overview of the development of AI and the functioning of Generative Pretrained Transformers (GPTs), noting that while AI may support writing tasks, it has limitations in interpreting research outcomes. She further outlined MDPI’s policies on AI-assisted manuscript preparation, emphasizing the need for transparent disclosure in the AI statement within the Acknowledgments and Materials and Methods Sections. The session concluded with a demonstration of AI tools developed by MDPI’s AI team to support publishing processes.

Following the successful implementation of the MDPI Academic Publishing Workshop, we commend a highly engaged and intellectually substantive day of professional learning and cross-disciplinary dialog. Faculty members, researchers, and graduate students actively explored critical aspects of high-quality, high-impact academic publishing. Beyond reinforcing the longstanding collaborative relationship between MDPI and the Department of Chemical Technology, Faculty of Science, Chulalongkorn University, the workshop has laid a robust foundation for sustained academic engagement and future joint initiatives in research dissemination and capacity building.
