Dr. Marvin L. Hanson, PhD, Professor of Communication Disorders at the University of Utah, died on 26 May 2025, at the age of 92. Dr. Hanson was one of the founders of the International Association of Orofacial Myology (IAOM) and an international leader in the field of orofacial myology. He contributed to the field’s development through speaking and teaching at conferences in Europe, South America, and the USA and through his many publications.
In addition to teaching and carrying out clinical responsibilities at the University of Utah in which he trained countless students, Dr. Hanson served as Chairman of the Department of Communication Disorders from 1984 to 1994. Dr. Hanson served three terms as President of the IAOM (1975–1977, 1991–1993, and 1993–1995) and was a frequent speaker at IAOM conventions. In the 40 articles he published in the International Journal of Orofacial Myology (IJOM) and in publications in other professional journals, his carefully planned and implemented clinical research serves as a “master class” in how to design and conduct well-controlled clinical studies involving individuals with orofacial myofunctional disorders.
Dr. Hanson was honored as a fellow of the American Speech, Language, and Hearing Association for his many contributions to ASHA. The IAOM granted him the distinguished President’s Award in 1977 and the Richard H. Barrett Award in 1981 and recognized him as an Honorary Life Member in 1986.
Dr. Hanson authored seven textbooks that continue to be widely used in universities. His last textbook, titled Orofacial Myology: International Perspectives, was published by Charles C. Thomas Publisher in 2003. The Hanson and Mason textbook continues to be the world leading textbook on orofacial myology. It has been translated into Chinese and is now being published and circulated in China.
Dr. Hanson maintained a private practice in speech therapy and orofacial myofunctional disorders long after his retirement from his university position. He continued to volunteer abroad, providing speech therapy during more than 20 Operation Smile missions. He also provided speech therapy to incarcerated individuals.
Having trained countless student clinicians in speech pathology and orofacial myology, Dr. Marvin “Marv” Hanson leaves a legacy of service to others that will not be forgotten.
