Meet the Journal’s Editorial Review Board Members

Abstract

I am honored to take on the role as Editor-in-Chief (EIC) of the International Journal of Orofacial Myology and Myofunctional Therapy (IJOM). To prepare for my role as EIC, I set two major goals to address today’s quickly evolving publication standards and the expansion and growth of the discipline of orofacial myofunctional disorders. The first was to establish an on-line submission and review process and an on-line archive for all past articles. The second critical goal was to recruit and enlist an international group of highly respected scientists and doctoral-level practitioners who represent diverse topics related to orofacial myofunctional disorders and therapy to serve on the journal’s Editorial Review Board (ERB). I am proud to introduce this new slate of ERB members.

I am honored to take on the role as Editor-in-Chief (EIC) of the International Journal of Orofacial Myology and Myofunctional Therapy (IJOM). I truly appreciate the invitation by Pat Taylor, who dutifully served as the IJOM’s EIC for the previous 21 years and who has entrusted me with this labor of love! I can’t promise the same run, but I am committed to putting forth my best effort to produce this journal, with the help of Managing Editor, Katie Dietrich-Burns. I am grateful for the warm welcome I have received from the Executive Committee and the members of the International Association of Orofacial Myology (IAOM).

In my more than 30-year career as a clinical and basic scientist in speech-language pathology and speech science, I have worked with many journals as an editorial assistant, author, reviewer, associate editor, and editor. Along the way, I have learned an enormous amount about the publication process and best practices for the dissemination of scholarly literature. I hope to be able to apply this knowledge to improve and expand this gem of a journal, with its 47-year continuous history and its focus on the nature, assessment, and treatment of orofacial myofunctional disorders.

To prepare for my role as EIC, I set two major goals to address today’s quickly evolving publication standards and the expansion and growth of the discipline of orofacial myofunctional disorders. The first was to establish an on-line submission and review process and an on-line archive for all past articles. After carefully researching the available options, the IAOM contracted with Digital Commons (formerly bepress), an Elsevier platform. The result of this partnership and many hours of volunteer work is this online, open-access, and highly discoverable journal (https://ijom.iaom.com/journal/). In just its first 11 months, the journal had over 18,000 downloads from 132 countries.

The second critical goal was to recruit and enlist an international group of highly respected scientists and doctoral-level practitioners who represent diverse topics related to orofacial myofunctional disorders and therapy to serve on the journal’s Editorial Review Board (ERB). I am proud to introduce this new slate of ERB members, presented here in alphabetical order.

Giédre Berretin-Felix, PhD, is Professor with the Speech Language Pathology and Audiology Department of the Bauru School of Dentistry, University of São Paulo (USP), Brazil. Her research focuses on oral motor disorders and oropharyngeal dysphagia, specifically addressing orofacial function across the lifespan as well as neurological, oncological, and dental conditions. Dr. Berretin-Felix is recipient of a Research Productivity Scholarship by the National Council for Scientific and Technological Development (CNPq). She is a founding member of the Brazilian Motricity Orofacial Association (ABRAMO), Scientific Director of the Brazilian Speech Therapy and Audiology Society (SBFa), and Chief Editor of the CEFAC Journal - Speech, Language, Hearing Sciences and Educational Journal.

Esther Mandelbaum Gonçalves Bianchini, Ph.D., SLP, is Professor in the Post Graduate program at Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo, Brazil. She received her undergraduate degree in Speech, Language and Hearing Sciences and master’s degree in Education: Communication Disorders from Pontifícia Universidade Católica de São Paulo. Her doctorate is in Sciences - Experimental pathophysiology from the School of Medicine, University of São Paulo. Dr. Bianchini is a Speech and Language Pathologist, specializing in speech production, orofacial motricity, orofacial myofunctional therapy, dysphagia, temporomandibular disorders, orthognatic surgery rehabilitation, facial trauma, and sleep disorders.

Heather Clark, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, is Chair of Speech Pathology in the Department of Neurology and Associate Professor in the College of Medicine at the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota, USA. She is board-certified by the Academy of Neurologic Communication Disorders and Sciences and is a Fellow of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. Dr. Clark’s clinical responsibilities include differential diagnosis of communication and swallowing disorders in adults and children. She serves as co-investigator in several projects examining the nature of speech, language, and swallowing impairments in degenerative neurologic disease.

Rosalba Courtney, DO, Ph.D., is an osteopath at the Breath and Body Clinic, Avalon, Australia, and research mentor for osteopathic students at Southern Cross University in Lismore, Australia. Dr. Courtney’s clinical work involves a collaborative approach to assist adults and children with chronic breathing disorders, craniofacial pain, sleep disordered breathing and orofacial myofunctional disorders. Her research addresses breathing therapy and breathing training, include nasal breathing rehabilitation and breathing training for chronic illness. Dr. Courtney is a member of Osteopathy Australia (OA), the Osteopathic Research Alliance (ORA), the International Society for the Advancement of Respiratory Physiology (ISARP), Australian Traditional Medicine Society (ATMA) and American Association of Physiological and Medical Dentistry (AAPMD).

Satish S. Kumar, DMD, MDSc, M.S., is Professor and Director of Periodontics at the Arizona School of Dentistry and Oral Health at A. T. Still University, Mesa, Arizona, USA. Dr. Kumar is a board-certified specialist in Periodontology, Oral Medicine, and Orofacial Pain. He serves as a Consultant to the American Dental Association’s (ADA) Council on Scientific Affairs and is a certified evidence reviewer by the ADA Center for Evidence-Based Dentistry where he also teaches the practice of applying best available clinical research evidence to patient care. Dr. Kumar has published about 60 original articles, reviews, critical summaries and book chapters in his areas of expertise. In addition, Dr. Kumar provides care of private patients on a part-time basis at the Greater Phoenix Periodontics and Implants in Mesa, AZ.

Almiro J. Machado Júnior, DDS, Ph.D., is a Collaborating Professor in the discipline of Otorhinolaryngology at the Faculty of Medical Sciences at Universidade Estadual de Campinas – UNICAMP, and Coordinator of the training course in Dentistry in Sleep Medicine at ACDC-Campinas, São Paulo, Brazil. He obtained a degree in Dentistry from Universidade São Francisco, where he specialized in functional orthopedics of the jaws (2003) by the Federal Council of Dentistry. His graduate degrees and post-doctoral education are in Medical Sciences by the Faculty of Medical Sciences UNICAMP. Dr. Machado Júnior holds an international internship in Università degli Studi di Roma La Sapienza-Italy. His research and clinical work address the physiology of the stomatognathic system, neurovegetative functions, cephalometry, obstructive sleep apnea, functional jaw orthopedics, and orofacial myofunctional therapy.

Roberta Lopes de Castro Martinelli, Ph.D., SLP, is Professor at University of São Paulo (USP), Brazil. She is a board-certified specialist in Orofacial Motricity. She conducts research in orofacial myofunctional disorders, speech production and breastfeeding. Dr. Martinelli has developed a standard assessment protocol for the lingual frenulum for infants and was instrumental in the development and institution of Brazil’s lingual frenulum inspection law. She is Coordinator of the Orofacial Motricity Department of the Brazilian Speech Therapy and Audiology Society (SBFa) and founding member of the Brazilian Motricity Orofacial Association (ABRAMO). Dr. Martinelli is Head of the lingual frenulum evaluation department at the Santa Therezinha Hospital.

Takashi Ono, DDS, Ph.D., is Professor and Chairman of the Department of Orthodontic Science, Graduate School Tokyo Medical and Dental University (TMDU), Tokyo, Japan. He studied at TMDU, the University of British Columbia, Canada and the University of Copenhagen, Denmark. Prof. Ono is or has been an Adjunct/Visiting Professor at 6 domestic and 5 international universities. He serves as an editorial board member for 12 international peer-reviewed journals, has published over 280 scientific articles and book chapters, and has been invited extensively to lecture nationally and internationally. Prof. Ono is a recipient of IADR/AADR Williams J. Gies Award, SIDO (Societa Italiana di Ortodonzia) Anthony Gianelly Award, and Honorary Membership of Taiwan Association of Orthodontists. He was appointed Chairman of the 9^th International Orthodontic Congress (IOC) in 2020, and is a member of the Executive Committee of the World Federation of Orthodontists (WFO).

Jayanti Ray, Ph.D., CCC-SLP, is Professor and Chair of the Department of Communication Disorders at Southeast Missouri State University, Cape Girardeau, Missouri, USA. She teaches graduate courses and conducts research in voice disorders, orofacial myofunctional disorders, cognitive impairments, and neurogenic speech disorders. Dr. Ray has worked in pediatric and adult home health, skilled nursing facilities, hospitals, and private practice settings before joining academia. She serves as editor for a state association journal and on the editorial review board for two journals including the IJOM. In addition, Dr. Ray volunteers for over ten professional organizations related to communication disorders and allied health, as well as with several community organizations focused on oral health, aging, cognition, youth wellness, and reading success.

Hope C. Reed, SLP.D., CCC-SLP, C.O.M.®, is Associate Professor in the Communicative Sciences and Disorders Program at Alabama A & M University in Normal, Alabama, USA. She is currently the only Certified Orofacial Myologist® in Alabama and established the world’s first university-based clinic for children and adults with orofacial myofunctional disorders. Dr. Reed has numerous publications on topics related to orofacial myofunctional disorders, and she is frequently invited to present at international, regional, state, and local conferences. She also creates Web-based continuing education courses for publication. In addition to serving on the Editorial Review Board for this journal, she is also the Chairperson of the International Association of Orofacial Myology’s Institutional Review Board.

Karen Spruyt, Ph.D., HDR, is Professor with the National Institute of Medicine and Health (INSERM) - NeuroDiderot, at the Université de Paris, France. She attended the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, Belgium, where she was awarded an undergraduate degree in child, adolescent, and adult clinical psychology, master’s degrees in child neuropsychology and biostatistics, and a doctoral degree investigating “Pediatric Sleep Problems: a contribution to their identification and relationship with daytime behavior.” She then proceeded to the Monash Institute of Medical Research and Ritchie Center for Baby Health Research in Australia and began her independent research career at the University of Chicago, Illinois, US. Dr. Spruyt has been a visiting Professor at universities in Canada, China, and Brazil, has published over 80 scientific articles, and is frequently invited to speak at international sleep conferences.

Fumiyo Tamura, DDS, Ph.D., is a dentist and Professor in the Tama Oral Rehabilitation Clinic at the Nippon Dental University, School of Life Dentistry in Tokyo, Japan. She is a board member of the Japanese Association for Disability and Oral Health. Dr. Tamura received her Ph.D. from Showa University in 1997 where she studied “Changes of arterial oxygen saturation during eating in severely disabled people.” In 2001, she studied abroad at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. Dr. Tamura has published numerous books for guidance on the feeding and eating problems of children in Japan.

Yue Weng Cheu, BDS, FRACDS, MJDF RCSEng, is Clinical Director of DP Dental, Singapore, and Co-Founder at WhatsDoc. Dr. Cheu received a BDS degree at the National University of Singapore, Membership of the Joint Dental Faculties of the Royal College of Surgeons, England, Mastership certification with the World Clinical Laser Institute, and Certificate of Oral Implantology from Frankfurt University. Dr. Yue’s training continued in the US where he completed courses on temporomandibular joint disorders at Occlusion Connections and a mini residency on Dental Sleep Medicine at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine. His work focuses on using a dental approach for overall health, with particular emphasis on the importance of tongue function. Dr. Yue has been named Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Dental Surgeons, International College of Dentists, and International Congress of Oral Implantologists.

Soroush Zaghi, M.D., is the Medial Director and Co-Founder of The Breathe Institute in Los Angeles, California. He studied Neuroscience and Spanish at University of California Los Angeles (UCLA) before attending Harvard Medical School. Dr. Zaghi completed residency in Otolaryngology – Head and Neck Surgery at UCLA and a Sleep Surgery Fellowship at Stanford University. The focus of Dr. Zaghi’s sub-specialty training is the comprehensive treatment of tethered oral tissues, nasal obstruction, oral breathing, snoring, and obstructive sleep apnea. He has published over 80 peer-reviewed research publications in the fields of neuroscience, head and neck surgery, and sleep-disordered breathing.

I and the entire IAOM are honored to welcome these highly accomplished colleagues and this professionally and geographically diverse team to assist us in the important work of advancing the science and evidence in orofacial myology and myofunctional therapy.
