International Association of Orofacial Myology Regarding: Orofacial Myologist Providing Clinical Services via Telepractice: Position Statement

Abstract

This position statement is an official policy of the International Association of Orofacial Myology (IAOM) approved by the Board of Directors on 10/23/2008.

It is the position of the International Association of Orofacial Myology (IAOM) that telepractice is an appropriate model of service delivery by IAOM Certified Orofacial Myologists. Telepractice is the use of electronic media and/or technology to deliver professional services to a distant location by linking clinician to patient; clinician to student; or clinician to clinician for assessment, intervention, training, and/or consultation. Telepractice may be used to overcome barriers of access to services caused by location, unavailability of specialists and/or impaired mobility.

The use of telepractice does not remove any existing responsibilities in delivering services, including adherence to the IAOM Code of Ethics, Bylaws, state and federal laws (e.g. licensure, HIPAA, etc.) and other professional policy documents (e.g. ASHA, AGD, etc.) on professional practices. The quality of services delivered via telepractice must be consistent with the quality of services delivered face-to-face.
