Assessment of the Spatial Variation in the Occurrence and Intensity of Major Hurricanes in the Western Hemisphere
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
This study is very interesting in assessing the spatial variability of MHs occurrence and their annual trends in the Northwest Pacific and Northeast Pacific basins during 1970-2019. Through a multi-scale temporal analysis of MHs in the Northwest Pacific and Northeast Pacific seas, a significant increase in the occurrence and intensity of MHs was observed. The relationship between climate change and the increase in the occurrence and intensity of tropical cyclones is evident, probably due to the changes in SST. Its statistical analysis shows that most of the variability can be attributed to physical variables in the northern basin, including VWS, AMO, and ENSO, especially the La Niña phase, all of which affect hurricane occurrence. This research paper can be revised for publication.

We thank the reviewer for the comment, we also noticed that the year 2019 was wrongly used in the text instead of 2021. This problem has been corrected.

Initially, I would like to congratulate the authors for the excellent work submitted to the journal. The importance of discussing the discussed topic is of unique relevance to environmental science as a whole. However, the work is lacking in some aspects, which end up weakening it too much.
1. Lines 17-18, in the abstract, these techniques and analyzes could be mentioned, this would improve the text and already prepare the reader for what will come in the article's methodology.
2. In the introduction, between lines 78 to 90, it should be pointed out more precisely, what the research problem is, and the general objective of the work. It's implied, but it's important to make it clear.
3. The maps in hexagons, how were they made? Is there a cartographic base ready? Why were they set every 3.5°? I would like to know more about this, and it would be very important to insert this information in the article, especially, creating a sub-item in the methodology, explaining the creation of the maps.
4. Very interesting research, congratulations to the authors.
