Advances in Mask-Modulated Lensless Imaging
Round 1
Reviewer 1 Report
Comments and Suggestions for AuthorsThe manuscript “Advances in mask-modulated lensless imaging” reviewed the recent developments in lensless imaging using mask modulation techniques. It introduced the principles of image reconstruction and deep learning algorithms, and summarized its applications and future directions. The manuscript is informative and provides perspectives to readers who are interested in this research area. I would recommend its publication on Electronics with the following minor revisions.
1. Full description of an acronym should be given when it first time appears. For example, in page 3, the 5th line from the bottom of paragraph 1, “PCC and PSNR” should be “Pearson's inner-product correlation coefficient (PCC) and peak signal-to-noise ratio (PSNR)”. In the first line of page 5, “CNN” should be “convolutional neural network (CNN)”. In page 6, section 3.2, “LASSO” should be “Least absolute shrinkage and selection operator (LASSO)”, “FISTA” should be “Fast iterative shrinkage-thresholding algorithm (FISTA)”. In page 8, section 4.1, “high dynamic ranging imaging” should be “high dynamic ranging (HDR) imaging”.
2. Figure 1 is not mentioned in context, please explain Figure 1 in section 2.
3. In page 6, section 3.2, in the sentence “such as FISTA [51], Chambolle-Pock algorithm [52], the alternating direction method of multipliers (ADMM) [52], etc.”, the cited references 51 and 52 are not related to these algorithms. The authors can replace them with related suitable references.
4. Please introduce the parameters in equation (6).
5. For the references, please check and make the references to be in the same format. There are some typos as below in the reference list:
a. For references 3, 5, 6, 10, the journal Opt. should be “Applied Optics”, or be abbreviated as “Appl. Opt.”.
c. For reference 7, the journal Opt. should be “Optical Engineering”.
d. For references 34 and 35, the journal Opt. should be “Optics Express”.
e. For reference 36, the journal Opt. should be “Optics Letters”.
f. For reference 44, the journal Opt. should be “Optica”.

Comments and Suggestions for AuthorsLensless imaging is known from many years and in several different approaches and applications it has some advantages. In this paper authors provide a careful review of the state of the art of a particular type mask-modulated lensless imaging. The review is sound and it may be useful to those beginning working on this topic. Some lines of future evolution are also drawn. The list of references is large and meaningful although some other well known paper could be also mentionned. Although not stricktly in the focus of this paper I strongly suggest authors to discurse about the combination of mask-modulated lensless imaging and single pixel imaging. I strongly advise reading recent papers of the matter (for instance those of the work of the group of Professors Lancis and Tajahuerce of the University Jaume I).
I also suggest authors to refrain using vague generic and not precise statments like for instance the one at the first paragraph of the abstract "Lensless imaging breaks the constraints of traditional lens imaging such as resolution versus field of view (FOV) trade-off limitation and enables aberrated free imaging". Please do rephrase it (LI may "break" some of the....)

Comments and Suggestions for AuthorsRecommendation: Publish in Electronics after minor revision.
Dear editor and authors,
The manuscript by Yangyundou Wang et give a comprehensive overview on the mask-modulated lensless imaging over the past decades. Extensive discussion has been provided on the operational principles of image reconstruction, with a specific emphasis on deep learning algorithms and compressive imaging. The authors also put forward perspective about the applications and future development of lensless imaging techniques at the end of the manuscript. The review will certainly be a guide for the future development of lensless imaging. I would recommend the publication of the manuscript after addressing the following points:
1. In the image reconstruction models of Fig. 2, please include a quantitative comparison or visual results of performance benchmark of each method. Please highlight their applications, pros, and cons analysis of the training network.
2. To further elaborate on the future directions section, kindly provide further views regarding prospective obstacles and new solutions. Examine emerging technologies or domains that require additional investigation.
3. Kindly include an introductory section on applications. To illustrate, commence the section by providing a concise introduction that highlights the tangible effects of mask-modulated lensless imaging systems. This establishes the context for considering certain applications.
4. Kindly include a thorough analysis of the constraints and shortcomings of the applications. Enumerate and provide a concise analysis of the constraints or obstacles pertaining to the aforementioned applications. This offers an equitable viewpoint on the possibilities of the technology.
5. In application discussion, make a comparison between mask-modulated lensless imaging applications and traditional approaches. Enumerate the benefits that lensless imaging offers.
