Numerical Study of the Influence of the Geometrical Irregularities on Bodies of Revolution at High Angles of Attack

This paper investigates the performance of an Unsteady Reynolds Averaged Navier-Stokes (URANS) approach using different meshes (structured and non-structured) within ANSYS FLUENT software and eddy viscosity (k-ω SST) and Reynolds stress closure models enhanced with the Scale Adaptive Simulation (SAS) method to simulate the flow around an ogive-cylinder body at high angles of attack and subsonic flow conditions (with Mach and Reynolds numbers around Ma = 0.2 and Re = 2∙106). The results obtained show that the flow becomes asymmetric, and a net side force on the body appears which changes sign depending on small changes in initial conditions and for different meshes, which is in qualitative general agreement with lab-experimental observations. The observed behavior is guessed to be the product of a global and convective flow instabilities occurring at high Re and angles of attack.
I think the results could be of interest to the CFD community and recommend publication. The only my major concern is the usage of the term “convective” instability which in some sense is misleading since there is also a notion of a convective instability due to a sufficiently strong non-homogeneous flow temperature distribution which is not the case in the considered flow configuration. I think, it would be helpful if a relevant explanation of the term “convective” was provided (e.g. somewhere in the introduction). I also found a few inaccuracies and typos (cf. below).
