Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This review summarized the main effects affecting rice chalkiness and transparency, their formation mechanism and genetic basis.

Questions:

1. Rice appearance quality includes grain shape, grain chalkiness and transparency. This Review focused on chalkiness and transparency, thus the title was advised to written to “Recent progress in research on the development of rice chalkiness and transparency”.

2. In the third section “Genetic background of rice appearance quality formation”, most fine mapped and cloned chalkiness genes were not included, such as qPCG1, qPGC8.1, qPGC8.2, qPGC9 and qPGC11 for fine mapped QTL, and WCR1 and OsbZIP60 for cloned genes. They should be added in the revised MS.

3. In the fourth section “Endosperm material for the formation of rice appearance quality”, this review only gave the relationship between the endosperm compositions and appearance quality, the authors should try to discuss how and why they affect the appearance quality.

Reviewer 2 Report

The paper is a good collection of information and need minor revision. However, the authors have frequently used very long sentences which reduces comprehensiveness of the manuscript. Better to avoid using very long sentences. Besides, there are many typo errors and grammatical mistakes which need to be rectified. Better, if authors can take help of a native English speaking person to address this concern. The suggestions for modification has been made as pop-up notes in the high lightened portion of the document attached.
