Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

In this review authors overview the recent architectures of the vibration-induced acoustic wave and streaming flow for micromanipulation, as indicated in the title. Overall, I have to say that the text is not well-organized, and was very difficult for me to read. Authors should consult with more experienced researchers to improve the logical flow and readability. Plus, authors definitely should use the professional English editing service.

First of all, the authors mention many different terms to express different concepts or principles, and they are used interexchange manner without explanation. For example, the main classification of this review is the acoustic wave (VAW) and streaming flow (VSF), as mentioned in the abstract and introduction (line 47-48). These concepts are explained in Chap. 3 and 4, respectively, but the title of Chap. 3 does not reflect the term streaming flow. Subcategories of VAW seems to be SAW and BAW, and SAW is further divided into in-plane and ultrasonic. But I am not sure why ultrasonic manipulation falls into SAW. Isn’t it BAW? It was further confusing because, in the text, the explanation for Fig. 1(c) came after Fig. 1(e).

Figure 1 is the overview of this categorization, but it is not clear which one among (a) to (h) represent each chapter or subchapter. My recommendation is to organize Fig. 1 so that each conceptual illustration represents each subchapter, with proper (unified) terms. Captions in Fig. 1 is too long and mentions the details of specific works. The explanation of Fig. 1 should only be conceptual because details of the individual researches will follow in Fig. 2 to 7.

The comments I noticed in reading are listed below:

line 35. efficiency -> inefficiency? line 57. Fig. 1(d) does not look like an array. line 73. but -> and? line 230-231. There are only two examples (Fig. 1 a&b), so it is not various. Or maybe “Various examples of in-plane manipulation devices, conceptually depicted in Fig. 1 (a) and (b), are shown in Figure 2.”? line 244 to 254: Please define the difference in principle of SSAW and TSAW before explaining their characteristics. line 264. I did not understand the meaning of “motion regular” In line 296-308, characteristics of dynamic manipulation are explained before explaining what they are in the following part. It was difficult to follow. line 319-320. I did not understand the sentence “Despite the clever… operation.” line 322-329. Please explain more how this kind of device works. line 365. What is the meaning of “subtly” here? The caption of Figure 4, 6, 7 are suddenly too short, while others are rather too long. Be consistent. Order of Figure 6 (a) to (c) is wrong. (c) should come first. I did not understand Fig. 7(c) at all. line 614-615. Authors discussed the comparison to optical tweezers beforehand (line 607), but now suddenly changed to magnetic ones here. It does not make sense.

Reviewer 2 Report

The works is complete. A lack in literature on general papers on micromanipulation should be solved, i.e.:
