Comments and Suggestions for AuthorsThis essay on the Reed ASJ is delightful, surprising, and informative regarding matters that too often are left as an exercise for the imagination. This manuscript annotation of Sterne's A Sentimental Journey offers a genuinely new and useful perspective on reading practices in the eighteenth century, through the lens not of theoretical application to this annotation, but through the strange and unique mind of one person confronting an aesthetically and morally complicated text.
I cannot speak to the provenance or contents of this particular copy of ASJ, but the images provided of the marginalia are stunning and convincing. The author provides useful context and comparisons between this particular text and other similar annotations. The author also helpfully offers a wide range of possible audiences for these annotations, suggesting a combination of contemplative and communicative purposes.
To both the scholar and the lover of Sterne, this essay is tremendously valuable, and offers us a rare glimpse of how one mind encountered a text that itself describes one mind encountering the world. It is clearly and competently written, and contains useful but not excessive citations and images. I found this essay to be quite excellent, I would be eager to share this work with my students and colleagues.

Figure numbers have been added within the text.
The first edition of ASJ does typically include a subscribers list, but it is missing from this copy. I have amended the reference to this for greater clarity.
I have been through the suggested amendments and made all sufficient changes.
