Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This paper investigates the flow stress optimization of Inconel 718 based on a coupled simulation of material forming analysis and Joule Heating. Strain, strain rate and temperature effect are taken into account. The research is interesting and the results are well presented. Some suggestions are given below and minor revisions are needed before pulication.

1. Strain rate and thermal softening effect is studied extensively and many models are proposed. The review in Introduction is suggested to include more details about these model developments, such as Zerilli-Armstrong, Khan-Huang, Lim-Huh, Piao-Huh etc.

2. In the last 10 years, artificial neural network model attracts more attentions to model the strain rate and temperature effect on flow curves. ANN model is also used in numerical simulation, such as Li, Roth, Mohr (2019. IJP 118, 320-344) and Shang Et al. (2022. JMPT, 302, 117501). This new application of ANN model should be introduced in Introduction.

3. At large strain of uniaxial compression, the deformation is not uniform. How did the authors consider the non-uniform deformation during calculation of flow curves.

"Line Number" means a line when it is active in MS World's "Track Changes" function.

Point 1: Strain rate and thermal softening effect is studied extensively and many models are proposed. The review in Introduction is suggested to include more details about these model developments, such as Zerilli-Armstrong, Khan-Huang, Lim-Huh, Piao-Huh etc.

Respoinse 1: The precedent researches were added as your comments

You can check the revision on the line 61~62, 109~117.

Reference ([5], [6]), ([25], [26], [27]) were added.

Point 2: In the last 10 years, artificial neural network model attracts more attentions to model the strain rate and temperature effect on flow curves. ANN model is also used in numerical simulation, such as Li, Roth, Mohr (2019. IJP 118, 320-344) and Shang Et al. (2022. JMPT, 302, 117501). This new application of ANN model should be introduced in Introduction.

Respoinse 2: The researches on ANN model were updated on the line 118~126.

Reference ([28], [29], [30]) were added.

Point 3: At large strain of uniaxial compression, the deformation is not uniform. How did the authors consider the non-uniform deformation during calculation of flow curves.

Respoinse 3: The calculation of strain and stress in Eqs. (1) and (2) did not consider the effect of friction as suggested by Roebuck and Gholamzadeh because the flow stress is before optimization. The optimized flow stress was calculated by optimization with H-S CE.

Reviewer 2 Report

This submission cannot be accepted for publication for several reasons:

1. The authors report of a simulation of the experiments, these are performed in a simulator. This is a flagrant contradiction.

2. The experimental machine as well as the heating cycles are  presented in the simulation section, not in the experimental section, this is not acceptable either.

3. What are Jmatpro results? What are F, A, P, V in the equations?

4. There are many typos.

"Line Number" means a line when it is active in MS World's "Track Changes" function.

Point 1: The authors report of a simulation of the experiments, these are performed in a simulator. This is a flagrant contradiction.

Respoinse 1: The description about experiments method in the section 3 were insert to line 168~171 of Section 2.

Point 2: The experimental machine as well as the heating cycles are presented in the simulation section, not in the experimental section, this is not acceptable either.

Respoinse 2: The experimental machine(Fig. 3) was removed cause thermocouple does not show much clearly.

The heating cycle has been moved to the section 2.

Point 3: What are Jmatpro results? What are F, A, P, V in the equations?

Respoinse 3: The Jmatpro results used are specific heat capacity and electrical resistivity.

The meaning of F, A, P, and V was added to the manuscript.

The F and A were updated on the line 186~187, and the P and V were updated on the line 228.

Point 4: There are many typos.

Respoinse 4: Overall, the manuscript was reviewed again.

All about revision section were used the "Track Change" so that you can check it for easy.

Reviewer 3 Report

The paper is interesting but needs some tidying. Often it is long-winded, and sometimes incorrect terminology is used (e.g. "peeled"). Figure 5 does not show much clearly, and so should be deleted.

In places, the text is not clear.

The conclusions have too much detail about the experimental details.

Point 1: The paper is interesting but needs some tidying. Often it is long-winded, and sometimes incorrect terminology is used (e.g. "peeled").

Respoinse 1: It means that we used skin cut Φ30mm round bar to Φ8mm x 12 mm compression test specimens. We used ‘peel’ to describe ‘skin cut’. ‘Peeled’ is eliminated in the revision.  You can check it on the line 162
