Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Dear Authors,

The study is interesting with an enormous amount of experiments. However, it lacks a scientific discussion. To my surprise, there are no references quoted to discuss your results. There is no flow in the presentation of results. It needs a major revision.

On a minor note please improve your fonts for figures, for example, figure 3.

This work provides a analysis of the burnishing parameters and their influence on the surface of Ti-6Al-4V.

The subject should be clarified.
The abstract is hardly legible.
Figures are blurred, poor quality, small font makes the axis markings in the charts not legible.
English requires correction.

The editorial form must be corrected.

The methods are don't adequately described.

The results are don't clearly presented.

Reviewer 3 Report

This manuscript investigated the influences of burnishing parameters and burnishing cooling conditions on burnishing effects. Some issues need to be paid more attentions to improve the quality of the manuscript.

  1. The manuscript just described the experiment phenomena, what the mechanism behind the phenomenon?
  2. Three levels experiments were conducted, however, in this reviewer opinion, three points are not enough to reflect the variation trends for different burnishing parameters and cooling conditions.

    3. The figures need to be improved. There are almost no coordinate units.

Author Response

Detailed answers to the reviewers.

Authors sincerely thank the all the reviewers for the comments. The detailed responses to the further reviewer’s comments and suggestions are reported below. All the significant changes have been highlighted in yellow on the revised manuscript.

This manuscript investigated the influences of burnishing parameters and burnishing

cooling conditions on burnishing effects. Some issues need to be paid more attentions to

improve the quality of the manuscript.

  1. The manuscript just described the experiment phenomena, what the mechanism

behind the phenomenon?

Authors: Authors changed the manuscript improving it and adding more details regarding the main mechanisms leading to the reported results for all the investigated variables.

Reviewer: Three levels experiments were conducted, however, in this reviewer opinion, three

points are not enough to reflect the variation trends for different burnishing

parameters and cooling conditions.

Authors: Authors did preliminary investigations prior to select the number of factors influencing the surface integrity. As a result, 5 factors have been taken into account. According to the large number of influencing factors, the number of levels cannot be high in order to allow testing feasibility. In fact a 3^4x2 full factorial plan has been obtained (162 points).

Considering the number of repetitions, we obtained about 500 experiments which allowed a sufficient understanding of the involved phenomena with a reasonable cost and time.

Reviewer: The figures need to be improved. There are almost no coordinate units.

Authors: All the figures reported the units. When it was too busy to be reported in the figure they are reported in the related caption. The last figure reports the overall results of different variables so that the units are reported in the caption for the Y axis.

Reviewer 4 Report

The article entitled “ Prediction of surface integrity parameters in roller burnishing” contains the results of research on the surface structure parameters of the titanium alloy obtained as a result of burnishing process. This article contains many results of research on the influence of technological parameters on the structure and properties of the surface layer. In addition to the dependence graphs and statistical data, the article includes regression equations of the studied relationships. The data included in the work are interesting and important from the  practice point of view. However, the article lacks a comprehensive analysis of the obtained results in terms of the significance of individual input factors for the utility parameters of the processed shaft. Comments on individual results are modest and repeated in many places according to a similar formula. The article should comment on the presented dependencies in more detail and indicate important process points useful in shop floor practice. For example, when analysing Fig. 4, it is difficult to say that the process parameters have an impact on the hardness, as the variability of the results is in range of the measurement uncertainty of this parameter.

Detail comments:

The data in this article is only for a specific titanium alloy. The information about this limitation should be included in the title of the article.

The subject of research (shaft) should be described in more detail in terms of its initial properties, i.e. material, surface structure, hardness, etc., and the distribution of the values of these parameters.

The surface structure is described by the Ra parameter, there are no parameters at which the roughness was measured, i.e. cut-off, filter. Moreover, the Ra parameter is an average parameter and it does not say much about the surface structure. The article should contain more data on the surface structure after burnishing, e.g. surface profile.

The graphs in Figures 1,3 ,4, 8, are to small.

Line 164, 174, caption in Fig 8, and etc. should be checked.

Lines 325-331 in the conclusions contain information from the abstract, while the others show the effects of the burnishing process. If the aim of the article is to characterize the process by means of regression equations, that the conclusions should be refer to the achievements that are the results of the research included in the article.

Round 2

Reviewer 1 Report

In conclusions line 376, there is a grammatical mistake. Please correct it and proof read the whole manuscript to avoid anymore of such errors.

Author Response

Authors sincerely thank t all the reviewers for the provided suggestions. The sentence  highlighted by reviewer 1 has been corrected.

Reviewer 2 Report

Thank you for correcting the article.

Author Response

Authors have deeply reviewed the english form of the proposed new version of the article

Reviewer 3 Report

This manuscript has been revised according to the reviewer opinion. It can be published.

Author Response

Authors sincerely thank the all the reviewers for the comments.

Reviewer 4 Report

In the comments, I mentioned the supplement of the title of the article because many people browse the literature by title and they should be informed about the limitations of research only to one material.

Figure 1 shows the burnishing process as an overview picture, while the detail description of outline of the roller is missing.

The current ISO Standards proposes the notation Ra (not Ra).

Line 144, it is say about calculation in Figure 1, what calculation, where there are?

Only one drawing was corrected (1), the other drawings did not change the size.

Line 273, what is meaning "higher local contact", during burnishing, usually it talks about the “contact surface”, “pressures in the contact area”.

Reviewer R4

In the comments, I mentioned the supplement of the title of the article because many people browse the literature by title and they should be informed about the limitations of research only to one material.

Authors: The title has been modified adding Ti6Al4V

Reviewer : Figure 1 shows the burnishing process as an overview picture, while the detail description of outline of the roller is missing.

Authors: Authors added further information about the roller tool ( radius and material).

Reviewer : The current ISO Standards proposes the notation Ra (not Ra).

Authors: Authors used the ISO notation along the paper. There was a typos in the equation and it was corrected.

Reviewer : Line 144, it is say about calculation in Figure 1, what calculation, where there are?

Authors: Authors modified the sentence accordingly

Reviewer : Only one drawing was corrected (1), the other drawings did not change the size.

Authors: The fonts of all figures have been further enlarged in order to make them more readable

Reviewer : Line 273, what is meaning "higher local contact", during burnishing, usually it talks about the “contact surface”, “pressures in the contact area”.

Authors: Authors changed higher local contact into higher contact surface
