Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This Article is very interesting to study the characteristics of farmland prices and disasters. I think it will be easier to understand if we modify a few security points. 1. Addition to the preceding study is required. It is necessary to search for existing research on disasters and farmland and present the originality of this paper. 2. In Chapter 2, you need to explain the Agricultural Disaster Relief Program in Taiwan with pictures or tables. 3. Possible disasters on farmland are largely divided into typhoons and droughts. In this study, only typhoons were presented, but it is necessary to consider drought as well. If analysis is difficult, the text should provide a reason for it. 5. The contents of Chapter 5 have been written too widely. It is necessary to separate the results and discussions into chapters. In addition, we need to present the feasibility and differentiation of this study through comparison with existing research contents in the discussion section. 5. Much of the research is shown in the table. If I add a picture, it will help me understand the thesis.

I enjoyed reading the article and the flow and presentation are fine.

I however, have a concern about the way the introduction is written. The problem statement is clear but the introduction contains some elements of results and methodology. This would be fine for an abstract but not an introduction. The introduction is meant to drive the argument about the gap and possibly what contributions the paper makes. I advise the authors to remove the text about results and methods of data collection from the introduction.

The authors wrote in lines 73 - 75 that

"In Taiwan, farmers can receive cash payments to compensate for their losses in farm production resulting from natural disaster shocks (the ADRP program in Taiwan is introduced below)" Here the authors make a reference without mentioning the particular section. It might be better to say, in "he ADRP program in Taiwan is introduced in section......

In  line 18 (the abstract), the authors use the abbreviation ADRP without the full meaning meanwhile, that is the first time a reader comes across it.

The maps used by the authors can be expanded to make it more readable. Besides readability, the map doesn't have a legend, title, scale and north arrow. Please fix it well.

This paper discussed the relationship between agriculture disaster relief subsidies and farmland price. It deals with an important and interesting topic, namely the effects of natural disaster on farmland price.

Here are the suggestions for revision.

  • 1 lacks of legend.
  • The theory and the case study were not combined together in a proper way. For example, how was the hedonic price theory mentioned on page 7 used in your case study?
  • The reason of choosing the fixed effect model is necessary to be addressed. (Page 8 formula 1)
  • The discussions can be improved by critically comparing the findings of this research and those reported in the previous literature.
  • The definition and delineation of urban and rural areas in Taiwan need to be introduced to international audience.
