Author Response

Dear Reviewer:

Thank you for your letter and for the reviewers’ comments concerning our manuscript entitled “Hydrodynamic characteristics at intersection areas of ship and bridge pier with skew bridge”. (ID: water-1625992).

Reviewer 2 Report

The manuscript presents a thorough study carried out towards establishing safe distances from pier to ship when a reference ship is passing below a bridge in realistic conditions regarding one of China's rivers.

The approach and methodology, the input data, and the conclusions seem to be sufficiently explained and are also coherent.

The study involves two model test setups and a numerical study which seems to be well validated.

I have a few comments, for the authors to consider upon a final revision of the text:

  1. line 25 (abstract): it reads as the centre of gravity of a ship is being modified, which is not true. It is the position of the ship, expressed by its centre of gravity in the earth referential, that is. I strongly suggest to revise this sentence.
  2. line 123 ("China's high-speed railway is becoming..." - this sentence is not only arguable, as it also has zero relation to the scientific content of the paper. Please consider removing it.
  3. Please check Equations (5) and (6) and make sure the relations are consistent.
  4. The scale of the model tests with the pier (sections 1.1) should be stated explicitly.

Reviewer 3 Report

The reviewed article may be published in the journal, subject to changes. A literature review should be completed. References to world knowledge are insufficient. The literature review is critical. Items that are more than 20 years old are cited, and there is even an item that is more than 50 years old. The world overview of the current situation is completely missing. The literature review needs to be revised.
