Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The manuscript needs significant revision and strengthening of the scientific content based on the remarks made in the appended file.

A serious addressing to the content is needed in order to justify the scientific merit of the manuscript for the hight scientific level of the Journal MDPI Agronomy.

The scientific value of an assay of nitrates and nitrites of ten genotypes of potatoes needs to be supported of additional value. For example in the abstract it is stated that nitrates and nitrites are monitored after harvest and during storage which would represent some interest, but is missing elsewhere in the text. After improving the experimental design description and strengthening of methodology representation the manuscript could further be reviewed.

1) Review the formatting of the article according to the journal's rules;

line 26 - The genotype had a smaller effect on the nitrate content than environmental factors. Review sentence.

line 31 - put in alphabetical order;

Introduction

check citations

What are the limits established as a limit, both in food and for humans?

In addition, the hypothesis of the work was not reported in the introduction. I also suggest checking to contextualize the problem more clearly. And also what are the sources of nitrates and enitrites that can increase in plants.

Materials and methods

It is important to descry places with more clarity from where the experiments were carried out, soil conditions, temperatures, fertilization.

It is not clear the design adopted, the number of repetitions.

Results and discussion

Insert a table of p values;

What mechanism causes the increase in nitraro in potatoes.

Line 206, the sentence is meaningless with the text.

Line 225 According to reports by many authors (Kuś and Stalenga, 2006; Hmelak Gorenjak et al., 2014), many authors are just two, and even old citations.

Figure legends should better describe the figure. Also, what is the meaning of the letters, as I'm seeing that the letter C is for the biggest mpedias, but if it's an interaction graph it should have two letters per component.

Statistical analysis is confusing. Check.
