Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

This paper is about the synthesis, characterization, and performance of a zeolite supported Pt-Sn catalyst for propylene production from propane.

The paper can be published after addressing the following issues:

Introduction

  • What are the actual requirements of the industrial sector (put in numbers)? Please, add references (lines 41-42)

“Despite the improved catalytic behavior of Sn-promoted Pt-based catalysts, it still 42 remains a daunting challenge to satisfy the industrial requirement with high selectivity and stability.”

  • What are the references in which is shown that zeolites are improving the resistance to coke deactivation? (Lines 47-48)

“The three-dimensional pore structure of zeolites provides a potentially useful approach to overcome mass 48 transfer limitation; thus, zeolites enhance coke resistance and alleviate rapid deactivation.”

Results and discussion

  • Line 76-78: Please present Fig. 1 before showing
  • Figure 4: It would be advisable to enlarge this figure. In particular, in Fig.4 b, it is not clear that the particle distribution would be better.
  • Figure 5: Can you please identify the peaks? (Phases present)
  • Figure 7 and Table 4 before presenting
  • It would be good to expand the discussion with a more rigorous comparison with already published works.

Experimental section

  • Please, would it be possible to put this section after the introduction section?

Reviewer 2 Report

The MS by J.-R. Kim et al. is focused on the new approaches to Pt-Sn catalysts for the propane dehydrogenation. Authors have tested Beta zeolite supported catalysts in comparison with θ-Al2O3 and amorphous silica supported Pt-Sn catalysts. The MS can be published in Catalysts after taking into consideration of these points:

1) Figure 4. Dark crystalline material over support surface (a and d) need to be more clarified. Please provide separate pictures of these parts with EDX characterization.

2) Figure 5. Please add a comment about peaks marked with asterisk.

3) Table 4. Please add any information about your Blank.

4) According the data presented in Fig. 8 Pt-Sn/Q6 catalyst is fully inactive, please add any comment about this to the text.

5) Please, provide a discussion concerning with the comparison of presented Pt-Sn catalysts and known catalysts of the same type. This will be very helpful to evaluate the catalytic performance of the catalysts.

6) Please, add some general statements to the conclusions about catalytic performance/stability of the described catalysts and the same type catalysts reported in the literature.

Reviewer 3 Report

Su-Un Lee and co-workers prepared very interesting article dealing with experimental comparison of different supports for propane dehydrogenation using Pt-Sn catalyst. The readable manuscript brings new facts focused on structure vs. long term activity of beta zeolites and other commonly used supports for PDH catalysts. The authors explain uniqueness of Pt-Sn on beta zeolites.

I have only 2 comments dealing with this manuscript:

  1. Please, remove numbers of keywords.
  2. Please, explain the abbreviation or add the reference dealing with use of the abbreviation in line 83: ...types of *BEA.
