Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The topic of the research work and manuscript is really interesting and provides new information. However there are several issues to be addressed towards its quality improvement before thinking of publication.

The literature incorporated is considered inadequate to describe properly  the state-of-the-art. You should refer to the factors affecting the colour of wood surface and refer to the significance of colour in wood surfaces/wood floor. Concering the CIELAB-color system, the authors are recommended to add a brief comment on the feasibility of colour measurement on treated wood surface, incorporating as well the relevant study entitled "Effect of thermal treatment on colour and hygroscopic properties of poplar wood" to support such a statement. Generally, it seems that mainly studies implemented in east countries are included, while there is as well international literature available. In line 79, please explain the word "eigenvalues". Please provide details on the specimens measured (the raw material) referring to the solid wood floor (wood species, manufacturer, source of research material, age/structure of the specimens) since all this information is crucial for the colour differences. Provide more information concerning the pre-treatment method (this is not clear as well). Was there any other statistical analysis of the results, since the materials and methods is not much informative concerning the analysis of the results. In 294-299 you should provide reference. Which is the importance of the findings of this work except for the wood floor? In the discussion-conclusions chapter the meaning and importnce of the findings is not adequately highlighted. Improvement is recommended in this direction.

Author Response

Comment 1: You should refer to the factors affecting the colour of wood surface and refer to the significance of colour in wood surfaces/wood floor. Concerning the CIELAB-color system, the authors are recommended to add a brief comment on the feasibility of colour measurement on treated wood surface, incorporating as well the relevant study entitled "Effect of thermal treatment on colour and hygroscopic properties of poplar wood" to support such a statement. Generally, it seems that mainly studies implemented in east countries are included, while there is as well international literature available.

Response: We have added brief comment on the feasibility of color measurement and other reference in line 52.

Comment 2: In line 79, please explain the word "eigenvalues".

Response: We have explained the eigenvalues in line 81.

Comment 3: Please provide details on the specimens measured (the raw material) referring to the solid wood floor (wood species, manufacturer, source of research material, age/structure of the specimens) since all this information is crucial for the colour differences.

Response: We have added the details of the wood floor in line 105-106.

Comment 4: Provide more information concerning the pre-treatment method (this is not clear as well).

Response: We have added the specific methods in line 111.

Comment 5: Was there any other statistical analysis of the results, since the materials and methods is not much informative concerning the analysis of the results.

Response: We have added some other statistical analysis of the results in line 279 and table3.

Comment 6: In 294-299 you should provide reference.

Response: In the introduction section, the value of wood color has been cited, and we think it is cumbersome to quote again in the conclusion section.

Comment 7: Which is the importance of the findings of this work except for the wood floor?

Response: This paper expressed the idea that the research is to serve the human senses. If the existing color model is different from the human senses, the method of this paper can be used to modify it, so as to serve people better. There is practical value for solid wood furniture, which can achieve the color harmony of the overall decoration environment.

Comment 8: In the discussion-conclusions chapter the meaning and importnce of the findings is not adequately highlighted.

Response: We have highlighted the importance of the findings in line 326-330.

Reviewer 2 Report

The aim of this paper was color regression and sorting system of floors made from solid wood. Color is a very important factor from customers point of view. Topic of this paper will be interesting for the readers. However, authors should made changes and additions to the text.

Keywords

- Authors should consider splitting the keywords "solid wood floors" into "solid wood" and "floor." It would be better to use "color regression" than "wood color."

Introduction

- Please add some work related to wood color estimation.

Materials and methods

- There is a lack of information about the wood species used in the study. Wood species have different colors and a basic description is needed.

- Axes in Figure 3 should be described.

- Table 2 is not necessary. The values in the text can be given.

- The descriptions (fonts) in Figure 4 are unreadable.

Results

- The curves in Figures 10 and 11 can be described using a mathematical formula and the coefficient R2.

- The obtained results should be compared with the properties of wood species.

Discussion and conclusions

- Figure 15 with the description can be removed to the previous "Results" section.

References

- More papers related to wood color evaluation should be added.

I recommend the paper for the publishing after major changes and additions.

Author Response

Comment 1: - Authors should consider splitting the keywords "solid wood floors" into "solid wood" and "floor." It would be better to use "color regression" than "wood color.

Response: We have modified the keywords. In China, we used floors made of solid wood, so we call it solid wood floor.

Comment 2: Please add some work related to wood color estimation.

Response: We have added work related to color estimation in line 52.

Comment 3: There is a lack of information about the wood species used in the study. Wood species have different colors and a basic description is needed.

Response: We have added the specie of wood floor and enterprise in line 105.

Comment 4:  Axes in Figure 3 should be described.

Response: We have described axis L1, b1, bm in the paragraph above, in line 139-143.

Comment 5: Table 2 is not necessary. The values in the text can be given.

Response: We think Table2 could provide an intuitive data set distribution, which give readers an intuitive feeling.

Comment 6: The descriptions (fonts) in Figure 4 are unreadable.

Response: We have changed the fonts in Figure4.

Comment 7: The curves in Figures 10 and 11 can be described using a mathematical formula and the coefficient R2.

Response: The curves in Figure 10 is the HuberLoss changed with the increase of iteration, and the scatters and lines in Figure 11 is the result of different methods, so it has no mathematical meaning, and we add statistical magnitude in table 3.

Comment 8: Figure 15 with the description can be removed to the previous "Results" section.

Response: We have moved the description to Results section.

Comment 9: More papers related to wood color evaluation should be added.

Response: We have added papers related to wood color evaluation.

Reviewer 3 Report

The detection of wood color is an important topic for appearance applications such as flooring. Thus, the topic of this manuscript is relevant for publication in Forests. The manuscript is well written but I invite the authors to consider the following points.

1. Lines 101 to 110. What wood species was or were studied? Wood color can change significantly between heartwood and sapwood within the same species. Did you take this into consideration?

2. Line 144. You mentioned that two solid wood floors were compared. Were they of the same species or of different species?

3. Figure 4a is too small and unreadable. Figure 4b is also too small.

4. Equations 3 to 14. Where these equations come from? Give a reference. Also the variables are not defined. It needs to be done.

5. Lines 293 to 320. What are the practical outcomes of this work? It is not clear to me.

Author Response
