Industry 4.0 represents a significant transformation in industrial systems through digital integration, presenting both opportunities and challenges for aligning the workforce, especially in emerging economies like Thailand. This study adopts a sequential exploratory mixed-method approach to investigate how strategic human resource development (HRD) contributes to sustainable transformation, defined as the enduring alignment between workforce capabilities and technological advancement. The qualitative phase involved case studies of five Thai manufacturing firms at varying levels of Industry 4.0 adoption, utilizing semi-structured interviews with executives and HR leaders. Thematic findings informed the development of a structured survey, distributed to 144 firms. Partial Least Squares Structural Equation Modeling (PLS SEM) was used to test the hypothesized relationships among business pressures, leadership support, HRD preparedness, and technological readiness. The analysis reveals that business pressures significantly influence leadership and HRD, which in turn facilitate technological readiness. However, business pressures alone do not directly enhance readiness without the support of intermediaries. These results underscore the critical role of integrated HRD and leadership frameworks in enabling sustainable digital transformation. This study contributes to theoretical perspectives by integrating HRD, leadership, and technological readiness, offering practical guidance for firms aiming to navigate the complexities of Industry 4.0. Introduction: Nurses are the largest group of healthcare workers, and healthcare managers should pay attention to the quality of work life and the health and working capacity of nurses in order to ensure a sufficient number of nurses and a stable workforce. Aim: The present study aimed to determine nurses’ quality of work life, work ability index and intention to leave the nursing profession and to examine the associations between nurses’ quality of work life, work ability index and intention to leave the nursing profession. Methods: An online cross-sectional study was conducted. A total of 498 nurses completed the instrument, consisting of demographic data, Brooks’ Quality of Nursing Work Life Survey (BQNWL), Work Ability Index Questionnaire (WAIQ) and questions on their intention to leave their current job or the nursing profession. Results: Most nurses had a moderate quality of work life (QWL) (73.7%) and a good work ability index (WAI) (43.78%). Men (p = 0.047), nurses who study (p = 0.021), nurses who do not have children (p = 0.000) and nurses who do not take care of their parents (p = 0.000) have a statistically significantly higher total WAIQ score. Most nurses (61.1%) had considered changing jobs in the last 12 months, and 36.9% had considered leaving the nursing profession. A statistically significant positive correlation was found between the total BQNWL and the total WAI. The study found no correlation between QWL, WAI and intention to change jobs or leave the profession, which was unexpected. Conclusions: To ensure the provision of necessary nursing care and a healthy working environment for nurses, it is necessary to regularly monitor QWL and WAI and take measures to ensure the highest quality of working life. Further longitudinal and mixed-methods research is needed to understand the relationship between QWL, WAI and intention to leave. Full article

Background: Musculoskeletal disorders significantly affect healthcare professionals, particularly physiotherapists, due to the physical demands of their work. The link between physical ailments and psychological distress is especially prominent in clinical settings. Objectives: To assess the prevalence of work-related low back pain (LBP), stress, anxiety, and depression among physiotherapists in Saudi Arabia, and to identify associated local risk factors. Methods: A cross-sectional study using convenience sampling included 710 licensed physiotherapists across Saudi Arabia. Participants completed an online survey containing demographic data and the validated measures, including the Visual Analog Scale (VAS) for pain, the Oswestry Disability Index (ODI), and the Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale-21 (DASS-21) for psychological distress. Data were analysed using descriptive statistics, chi-square tests, correlation, and regression analyses. Results: Of 710 responses, 697 were valid; 378 physiotherapists reported work-related LBP. The mean pain intensity was 4.6 (SD = 1.6), with 54.2% experiencing moderate to severe disability. Mental health results showed 49.7% had depressive symptoms and 33.9% experienced some level of anxiety. Significant correlations were observed between disability and psychological distress (anxiety: r = 0.382; depression: r = 0.375; stress: r = 0.406; all p < 0.001). Regression analyses indicated psychological distress significantly predicted disability, with R2 values ranging from 0.125 to 0.248, being higher among inpatient physiotherapists. Conclusions: This study reveals a high prevalence of LBP and psychological distress among Saudi physiotherapists, with stress being the strongest predictor of LBP severity. Integrated ergonomic and mental health interventions, including workplace wellness programs and psychological support, are recommended to reduce risks and promote a healthier, more sustainable physiotherapy workforce. High-rise construction presents heightened safety risks due to vertical complexity, spatial constraints, and workforce variability. Conventional safety management often proves insufficient, especially in rapidly urbanizing or resource-limited settings. This study proposes a hybrid methodological framework to systematically identify and prioritize the critical factors influencing occupational safety in Vietnamese high-rise construction projects. Based on 181 valid survey responses from construction professionals, 23 observed variables were developed through extensive literature review and expert consultation. Exploratory Factor Analysis (EFA) was employed to empirically group 23 validated indicators into five key latent dimensions: (1) Safety Training and Inspection, (2) Employer’s Knowledge and Responsibility, (3) Worker’s Competence and Compliance, (4) Working Conditions and Environment, and (5) Safety Equipment and Signage. These dimensions were then structured into an Analytic Hierarchy Process (AHP) model, with pairwise comparisons conducted by industry experts to calculate consistency ratios and derive factor weights across three high-rise project case studies. The findings provide actionable insights for construction managers, safety professionals, and policymakers in developing and underdeveloped countries, supporting data-driven decision-making for safer and more sustainable urban development. Background: In this work, we examine determinants of staff departure rates in the NHS, a critical issue for workforce stability and continuity of care. High turnover, particularly among clinical staff, undermines service delivery and incurs substantial replacement costs. Methods: Here, we analyse a unique dataset derived from Electronic Staff Records at Ashford and St. Peter’s NHS Foundation Trust, using a machine learning approach to move beyond traditional survey-based methods, to assess propensity to leave. Results: In addition to established predictors such as salary and length of service, we identify drivers of increased risks of staff exits, including the distance between home and workplace and, especially for medical staff, cost centre vacancy rates. Conclusions: These findings highlight the multifactorial nature of staff retention and suggest the potential of local administrative data to improve workforce planning, for example, through hyperlocal recruitment strategies. Whilst further work will be required to assess the generalisability of our findings beyond a single Trust, our analysis offers insights for NHS managers seeking to stabilise staffing levels and reduce attrition through targeted interventions beyond pay and tenure. Background and Objectives: Emotional intelligence (EI) plays a critical role in safeguarding the emotional and psychological well-being of healthcare workers, acting as a buffer against burnout, and influencing the quality of patient care. Despite its significance, there remains a need to understand how EI levels correlate with burnout and what factors predict burnout in high-stress healthcare environments. This study, conducted at King Khaled Hospital in Al-Majmaah, Saudi Arabia, aims to assess the EI levels of healthcare staff, to determine the relationship between EI and burnout, and to identify key predictors of burnout to inform targeted interventions for improving workforce resilience and patient outcomes. Materials and Methods: Both self-reporting and standardized tests were integrated using cross-sectional surveys to evaluate the EI of each participant and the burnout they experience by averaging the rating of a 30-item questionnaire, allowing comparison of the interaction between EI, burnout, and work factors. Results: A significantly moderate level of EI was identified, while a high level of well-being was associated with a low level of burnout, and a high level of emotionality was associated with a high level of burnout. Results indicated that high job demands, call rotation, or casual work, and insufficient staff support were organizational correlates of burnout. Conclusions: Improving EI with a focus on the well-being sub-dimension may prevent burnout, and, for that, the interventions must be specific at both personal and organizational levels. Full article

Background: Bulgaria carries a high burden of colorectal cancer (CRC) but, at the start of this study, lacked a nationwide organized screening program. Understanding specialist views (particularly on mail-based fecal testing) is essential for effective policy development. Objective: The objective is to assess the attitudes towards, practices of, and perceived barriers to CRC screening among Bulgarian gastroenterologists, with a focus on the feasibility of mail-based fecal occult blood testing (FOBT). Methods: A cross-sectional survey of 38 gastroenterologists examined clinical use of FOBT, screening method preferences, and perceived systemic and patient-level barriers to CRC screening. Results: Among respondents, 57.89% reported using FOBT in clinical practice, and 71.05% indicated they would undergo the test themselves and recommend it to relatives. Colonoscopy was the preferred diagnostic tool for 84.21% of participants; however, the existing literature raises concerns about its feasibility for large-scale population screening. Key systemic barriers, rated on a 5-point Likert scale, included financial constraints (mean = 3.08), inadequate infrastructure (2.89), and healthcare workforce shortages (2.71). Patient-level barriers were led by low health literacy (4.13), lack of motivation (3.95), and procedural fears (3.26). A majority (84.38%) believed that mail-based FOBT would increase screening uptake, and 57.89% supported annual distribution of test kits. Nearly all respondents (97.37%) favored initiating screening at age 50. Conclusions: This study highlights strong support among Bulgarian gastroenterologists for a national CRC screening program, with particular endorsement of mail-based FOBT. Despite acknowledged systemic and population-level barriers, the findings suggest that such an approach could increase screening coverage, promote early detection, and support the strategic rollout of Bulgaria’s emerging cancer control initiatives. Impact of Structural Empowerment, Thriving at Work, and Caregiver Reciprocity on the Psychological Empowerment of Home Care Workers in South Korea

Objective: Given the critical workforce challenges in home care settings and the limited understanding of empowerment mechanisms in isolated work environments, this study aimed to examine how structural empowerment influences psychological empowerment among home care workers in South Korea through the mediating pathways of thriving at work and caregiver reciprocity. Based on Kanter’s empowerment theory, we specifically investigated the serial mediation effects to understand the complex processes through which organizational support structures translate into enhanced worker empowerment. Methods: A cross-sectional survey was conducted with 192 home care workers. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and serial multiple mediation analysis using SPSS Process Macro Model 6. Results: Structural empowerment demonstrated significant positive correlations with thriving at work (r = 0.445, p < 0.001), caregiver reciprocity (r = 0.490, p < 0.001), and psychological empowerment (r = 0.337, p < 0.001). Thriving at work significantly influenced both caregiver reciprocity (β = 0.3968, p < 0.001) and psychological empowerment (β = 0.1685, p < 0.001). The serial mediation analysis revealed that the indirect effect of structural empowerment on psychological empowerment through thriving at work and caregiver reciprocity was statistically significant (indirect effect = 0.1327, 95% CI [0.0713, 0.1929]), with the model explaining 58% of the variance in psychological empowerment. Conclusions: Structural empowerment significantly enhances psychological empowerment among home care workers through the sequential mediation of thriving at work and caregiver reciprocity. Healthcare organizations should prioritize strengthening structural empowerment through comprehensive support systems and conducive work environments to optimize care quality and worker well-being. Certain industries will bear a disproportionate share of the burden of climate change. Climate change risk perceptions can impact workers’ mental health and well-being; increased climate change risk perceptions are also associated with more favourable adaptive attitudes. It is, therefore, important to understand whether climate risk perceptions differ across workers between industries. We conducted an online survey of British Columbians (16+) in 2021 using social media advertisements. Participants rated how likely they believed their industry (Natural Resources, Science, Art and Recreation, Education/Law/Government, Health, Management/Business, Manufacturing, Sales, Trades) would be affected by climate change (on a scale from “Very Unlikely” to “Very Likely”). Ordinal logistic regression examined the association between occupational category and perceived industry vulnerability, adjusting for socio-demographic factors. Among 877 participants, 66.1% of Natural Resources workers perceived it was very/somewhat likely that climate change would impact their industry; only those in Science (78.3%) and Art and Recreation (71.4%) occupations had higher percentages. In the adjusted model, compared to Natural Resources workers, respondents in other occupations, including those in Art and Recreation, Education/Law/Government, Management/Business, Manufacturing, Sales, and Trades, perceived significantly lower risk of climate change-related industry impacts. Industry-specific interventions are needed to increase awareness of and readiness for climate adaptation. Policymakers and industry leaders should prioritize sectoral differences when designing interventions to support climate resilience in the workforce. Full article

Objectives: Scarce data are available regarding preventive medicine in forcibly displaced populations especially regarding non-communicable diseases like neoplasia, while even more limited data are available on Ukrainian refugees in Romania. To address this research gap, the present analysis was performed to investigate Ukrainian refugee women’s beliefs, attitudes, and opinions towards the Romanian and Ukrainian healthcare system in a comparison model while focusing on the HPV immunization rates and factors influencing the uptake for themselves and their children. Methods: Participants were recruited using the snowball sampling method through their General Practitioner (GP) and a health mediator. Results: In total, 105 women completed the online or physical survey. The mean age was 50 years. In total, 40% of women had not been to a gynecological check-up in 3 or more years, and more than 56% had never been screened. Only four were vaccinated against HPV, and none remembered which type of vaccine was dispensed or how many doses were utilized. The primary hindrances to accessing health services or immunization programs were language barriers, financial burdens, and a lack of information. Respondents’ general distrust of health systems and healthcare workforces were recurrent themes. Relationship status, living arrangements, and previous engagement in screening practices influenced immunization rates. Perceiving the healthcare officials as proactive concerning optional vaccination programs such as HPV immunization and actively receiving recommendations drove respondents to pursue vaccination. Conclusions: This analysis offers a foundational insight into the specific needs of refugee women. It can guide the development of effective public health interventions to improve health outcomes and vaccination rates among Ukrainian refugees in Romania. Tailored preventive campaigns with adequate native language information and prompts from medical experts in designated centers should be deployed to ensure inclusive tactics for vulnerable populations. The growing urgency of the climate crisis has heightened the importance of integrating sustainability into health education. Allied health professionals are well positioned to lead sustainable healthcare efforts, yet evidence suggests a persistent gap between student awareness and formal training. This study explored the perspectives, knowledge, and attitudes of Portuguese allied health students regarding sustainability. An online and anonymous cross-sectional survey was conducted among undergraduate and graduate students across multiple allied health disciplines. The questionnaire assessed general knowledge, perceptions of curricular integration, and attitudes toward sustainable clinical practice. A total of 247 (response rate of 8.23%) students participated, with the majority expressing high concern about climate change and strong support for environmentally responsible healthcare. However, the results revealed inconsistent awareness of healthcare’s environmental footprint and a limited exposure to structured sustainability education. Friedman tests indicated significant variability in students’ knowledge, perceived responsibility, and curricular experiences. Students identified priority themes for curricular inclusion—such as the environmental impact of the health system—and recognized their alignment with the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 3 (Good Health) and SDG 13 (Climate Action). The findings highlight the need for the systematic, competency-based integration of sustainability into allied health curricula to support a climate-resilient and ecologically responsible future healthcare workforce. Job satisfaction in sub-Saharan Africa is crucial as it directly impacts employee productivity, retention, and overall economic growth, fostering a motivated workforce that drives regional development. In sub–Saharan Africa, poor remuneration, limited professional development opportunities, and inadequate working conditions impact satisfaction. This study examined job-satisfaction predictors among health workers in primary healthcare settings across eight countries: Ethiopia, Kenya, Malawi, Senegal, South Sudan, Tanzania, Uganda, and Zambia. A cross-sectional study surveyed 1711 health workers, assessing five dimensions: employer–2employee relationships, remuneration and recognition, professional development, physical work environment, and supportive supervision. The study was conducted from October 2023 to March 2024. The job-satisfaction assessment tool was adopted from a validated tool originally developed for use in low-income healthcare settings. The tool was reviewed by staff from all the country offices to ensure contextual relevance and organization alignment. The responses were measured on a five-point Likert scale: 0: Not applicable, 1: Very dissatisfied, 2: Dissatisfied, 3: Neutral, 4: Satisfied, and 5: Very satisfied. The analysis employed descriptive and multivariable regression methods. Job satisfaction varied significantly by country. Satisfaction with the employer–employee relationship was highest in Zambia (80%) and lowest in Tanzania (16%). Remuneration satisfaction was highest in Senegal (63%) and Zambia (49%), while it was very low in Malawi (9.8%) and Ethiopia (2.3%). Overall, 44% of respondents were satisfied with their professional development, with Uganda leading (62%) and Ethiopia having the lowest satisfaction level (29%). Satisfaction with the physical environment was at 27%, with Uganda at 40% and Kenya at 12%. Satisfaction with supervisory support stood at 62%, with Zambia at 73% and Ethiopia at 30%. Key predictors of job satisfaction included a strong employer–employee relationships (OR = 2.20, p < 0.001), fair remuneration (OR = 1.59, p = 0.002), conducive work environments (OR = 1.71, p < 0.001), and supervisory support (OR = 3.58, p < 0.001. Improving the job satisfaction, retention, and performance of health workers in sub-Saharan Africa requires targeted interventions in employer–employee relationships, fair compensation, supportive supervision, and working conditions. Strategies must be tailored to each country’s unique challenges, as one-size-fits-all solutions may not be effective. Policymakers should prioritize these factors to build a motivated, resilient workforce, with ongoing research and monitoring essential to ensure sustained progress and improved healthcare delivery. Maternal mortality and morbidity are critical health challenges in the U.S., and building the perinatal workforce is a key to providing high-quality maternal medical care and services. Texas Southern University (TSU), home to a Doctor of Pharmacy program, launched the first Maternal Health Education and Research Training (MHERT) program to educate a cohort of high school, pharmacy, and health sciences students. Aiming to raise awareness of maternal health issues, build research skills, and promote action-based solutions. MHERT integrated online self-paced interactive lessons with hands-on research or community projects. Topics included maternal health epidemiology, causes of morbidity and mortality, research methods, literature reviews, and the development of action plans addressing maternal health challenges. Assessment tools included quizzes, open-ended reflection responses, training surveys, and course evaluations. Running from 3 June to 26 July 2024, the program enrolled 22 students. All participants completed both course components. Course evaluations showed strong and consistent satisfaction with the program, with teaching effectiveness rated at 95% and 96% for mid-program and final evaluations, respectively. MHERT enhanced participants’ understanding of maternal health, improved research skills, and encouraged community engagement and interdisciplinary collaboration. It offers a scalable model to strengthen public health education among high school, pharmacy, and health sciences students. Full article

From Diversity to Engagement: The Mediating Role of Job Satisfaction in the Link Between Diversity Climate and Organizational Withdrawal

Marked by a highly diverse workforce, the Indian construction industry faces ongoing challenges in fostering employee engagement and minimizing organizational withdrawal. This study examines the role of diversity climate in influencing psychological and physical withdrawal behaviors among construction professionals, assessing job satisfaction as a mediating variable. Grounded in Social Exchange Theory, the research employed a quantitative survey approach, gathering responses from 318 professionals across the sector. Partial least squares structural equation modeling (PLS-SEM) was used to test the hypothesized relationships. Results indicate that reduced psychological (β = –0.462, f2 = 0.465, p < 0.01) and physical withdrawal (β = –0.311, f2 = 0.194, p < 0.05) are associated with more positive perceptions of the diversity climate. Furthermore, this relationship is partially mediated by job satisfaction, with diversity climate positively influencing job satisfaction (β = 0.618, p < 0.001), which in turn reduces withdrawal tendencies (indirect effect on psychological withdrawal β = −0.094, p < 0.01 and physical withdrawal β = −0.068, p < 0.01). These results show that encouraging a supportive diversity climate not only helps but is also absolutely necessary for enhancing job satisfaction, lowering withdrawal behavior, and retaining trained talent. The findings offer concrete evidence that construction firms and policymakers should prioritize inclusive human resource strategies that directly improve project outcomes, reduce attrition, and enhance workforce engagement in the Indian construction sector. Biomedical research training initiatives need rigorous evaluation to achieve national goals of supporting a robust workforce in the biomedical sciences. Higher science self-efficacy is associated with the likelihood of pursuing a science-related research career, but we know little about the psychometric properties of this construct. In this study, we report on a comprehensive validation study of the Science Self-Efficacy Scale using a robust sample of 10,029 undergraduates enrolled across 11 higher education institutions that were part of a biomedical training initiative funded by the National Institutes of Health in the United States. We found the scale to be unidimensional with an Omega hierarchical (ωh) reliability coefficient of 0.86 and a marginal reliability of 0.91. Within the item response theory framework, we did not detect variation in item parameters across undergraduates’ race/ethnicity; however, one item had parameters that varied across gender identity. We determined that the Science Self-Efficacy Scale can be employed across undergraduates enrolled in science, and researchers can use the scale across a diverse group of students. Implications include ensuring that the scale functions consistently across diverse populations, enhancing the validity of conclusions that can be drawn from survey data analysis. Validating this construct with item response theory models strengthens its use for future research. Full article
