Bioactive Resin Cement Color Stability and Restoration Thickness as Determinants of the Final Shade in a Glass–Ceramic CAD/CAM Material

Abstract

Bioactive resin cements are gaining popularity for their clinical benefits, but concerns remain regarding their color stability. This study evaluated the color change (ΔE₀₀) and whiteness change (ΔWI_D) in bioactive resin cements and how their potential discoloration affects the shade of bonded CAD/CAM glass–ceramics at different ceramic thicknesses. VITA Mark II blocks were prepared in three thicknesses (0.5, 0.8, and 1.0 mm) and divided by resin cement: Panavia SA Universal (Pn), Predicta Bioactive Cement (Pr), and ACTIVA BioACTIVE Cement (Ac) (n = 10). Additionally, 10 specimens (10 × 2 mm) of each cement alone were prepared. Color was measured before and after 24 days of coffee immersion. Cement type significantly affected ΔE₀₀ (p < 0.001). Pn had the highest color stability, followed by Pr and Ac, with significant differences between each. ΔWI_D also varied by cement (p = 0.004), with Pn and Pr differing significantly from Ac. Ceramic thickness alone had no significant effect on ΔE₀₀ or ΔWI_D, but its interaction with cement type was significant (p < 0.001). While ceramic thickness does not directly affect the final shade, its combination with resin cement does. Choosing the right resin cement is key for long-term esthetic outcomes. Full article

Shakespeare’s Bookish Rulers: Philosophy and Nature Poetry in the Henry VI Trilogy and The Tempest

Abstract

Shakespeare’s early Henry VI trilogy and late The Tempest both feature reclusive, bookish rulers who are deposed because their rivals perceive an opportunity in the rulers’ trustingness and lack of interest in political affairs. Furthermore, the deposed rulers also share an interest in Platonic philosophies of the Renaissance; they differ, however, in their respective preferences for particular Platonist authors and writings. Henry VI is devoted to Boethius’s The Consolation of Philosophy. While Prospero, the protagonist of The Tempest, may have focused on Boethius and similar authors when he was in Milan, by the time we meet him on his island, he prefers Neoplatonic magic, bequeathed to the Renaissance by Ficino. While the two stories are not often read together, I argue that doing so yields a fascinating contrast in the modes of existence dictated by different streams of Renaissance philosophical thought. While Henry VI’s credulity and Boethianism lead him to express a preference for a contemplative life and to adopt an attitude of extreme passivity and surrender, Prospero’s suspicion and powerful use of magic associate him with the active life. The ultimate expressions of Henry’s preference for the contemplative life and of Prospero’s association with the active life both involve nature poetry. Henry expresses yearning for the peaceful lifestyle of a shepherd in a pastoral lyric he delivers in 3 Henry VI, while Prospero celebrates human labor and achievement in a georgic masque which he produces. Planning for Vita Activa—Labor, Work, and Action in a Communal Urban Gardening Project in Vienna

Abstract

Today, communal urban gardening (CUG) is a widespread phenomenon in European cities. Gardening has many positive qualities, ranging from growing healthy food to meaningful everyday life activities and political action. However, its integration into existing urban planning processes remains a challenge. Planning has a great influence on the qualities that can actually be realized by the gardeners. In order to develop a more appropriate planning process for CUG, a deeper understanding of the different activities that people engage in when they are gardening in an urban environment under given conditions is needed. In this paper, a garden project from Vienna is discussed against the background of Arendt’s theory of political action to advance the theoretical debates on the planning of CUGs. The case study shows that the three central spaces of a vita activa can emerge in one place if the appropriate framework conditions are provided through planning: containment, sovereign rights of use, egalitarian participation, plurality, and spatial organization towards the three activities of a vita activa: labor, work, and action.
