Background: A societal shift in attitudes is going to be required to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the field of transportation, which is crucial to the level of mitigation that can be achieved. There is increasing pressure on policymakers to address climate change and, in turn, to promote sustainable transport. The sector’s decarbonization is essential to meet climate change targets, and alternative powertrains, particularly battery electric trucks, can play a key role. However, international research shows that the solutions and strategic plan proposals are primarily developed in isolation according to the country’s specific conditions. Methods: This study aims to compare battery electric trucks and conventional internal combustion engine trucks in Hungary, focusing on the total cost of ownership over ten years. Results: This study examines the cost parameters for operating electric and conventional trucks, based on current economic conditions. In addition, alternative studies have been carried out to see what additional savings can be expected by changing the parameters under consideration. This research examines four scenarios that model changes in state subsidies, tolls, and excise duties alongside current cost parameters. Conclusions: The results suggest that public policy interventions play a key role in developing sustainable transport systems, particularly to preserve the competitiveness of small and medium-sized enterprises. This work presents a point cloud dataset of vehicles passing through a toll station in Colombia to be used to train artificial vision and computational intelligence algorithms. This article details the process of creating the dataset, covering initial data acquisition, range information preprocessing, point cloud validation, and vehicle labeling. Additionally, a detailed description of the structure and content of the dataset is provided, along with some potential applications of its use. The dataset consists of 36,026 total objects divided into 6 classes: 31,432 cars, campers, vans and 2-axle trucks with a single tire on the rear axle, 452 minibuses with a single tire on the rear axle, 1158 buses, 1179 2-axle small trucks, 797 2-axle large trucks, and 1008 trucks with 3 or more axles. The point clouds were captured using a LiDAR sensor and Doppler effect speed sensors. The dataset can be used to train and evaluate algorithms for range data processing, vehicle classification, vehicle counting, and traffic flow analysis. The dataset can also be used to develop new applications for intelligent transportation systems. Full article

To Green or Not to Green: A Political, Economic and Social Analysis for the Past Failure of Green Logistics

The objective of green logistics has thus far failed. For example, the share of greenhouse gas emissions by the transportation and logistics sector in Europe rose from 16.6% in 1990 to 24.3% in 2012. This article analyzes the reasons behind this failure by drawing on political, economic and business as well as social motivations and examples. At the core of this analysis are the established theorems of the Jevons paradox and the median voter (Black, Downs) in combination with time-distorted preferences of voters and consumers. Adding to the hurdles of green logistics are the problems of short-term political programs and decisions versus long-term business investments in transportation and logistics. Two cases from Germany are outlined regarding this political “meddling through” with a recent 2015 truck toll decision and the support for electric trucks and vehicles. Finally, the article proposes two ways forward: public control and restriction of carbon raw materials (coal, oil), as well as public investment in low-emission transport infrastructure or biofuels as the more feasible and likely alternative.
