Family empowerment is a key component of effective family-centered practices in healthcare, mental health, and educational services. The Family Empowerment Scale (FES) is the most commonly used instrument to evaluate empowerment in families raising children with emotional, behavioral, or developmental disorders. Despite its importance, the FES for diverse populations, especially Latinx parents, has rarely been evaluated using innovative psychometric approaches. In this study, we evaluated key dimensions and psychometric evidence of the Family Empowerment Scale (FES) for 96 Latinx parents of children with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) in the United States using an exploratory graph analysis (EGA). The EGA identified a five-dimensional structure, and EGA models outperformed the original CFA 3-factor models for both parents of children with autism and other disabilities. This study identified distinct, meaningful dimensions of empowerment that reflect both shared and unique empowerment experiences across two Latinx parent groups. These insights can inform the design of culturally responsive interventions, instruments, and policies that more precisely capture and boost empowerment in Latinx families. This study contributes to closing a gap in the literature by elevating the voices and experiences of Latinx families by laying the groundwork for more equitable support systems in special education and disability services. A Series of Severe and Critical COVID-19 Cases in Hospitalized, Unvaccinated Children: Clinical Findings and Hospital Care

Background/Objective: The COVID-19 pandemic profoundly transformed social life worldwide, indiscriminately affecting individuals across all age groups. Children have not been exempted from the risk of severe illness and death caused by COVID-19. Objective: This paper sought to describe the clinical findings, laboratory and imaging results, and hospital care provided for severe and critical cases of COVID-19 in unvaccinated children, with or without severe asthma, hospitalized in a public referral service for COVID-19 treatment in the Brazilian state of Pernambuco. Methods: This was a case series study of severe and critical COVID-19 in hospitalized, unvaccinated children, with or without severe asthma, conducted in a public referral hospital between March 2020 and June 2021. Results: The case series included 80 children, aged from 1 month to 11 years, with the highest frequency among those under 2 years old (58.8%) and a predominance of males (65%). Respiratory diseases, including severe asthma, were present in 73.8% of the cases. Pediatric multisystem inflammatory syndrome occurred in 15% of the children, some of whom presented with cardiac involvement. Oxygen therapy was required in 65% of the cases, mechanical ventilation in 15%, and 33.7% of the children required intensive care in a pediatric intensive care unit. Pulmonary infiltrates and ground-glass opacities were common findings on chest X-rays and CT scans; inflammatory markers were elevated, and the most commonly used medications were antibiotics, bronchodilators, and corticosteroids. Conclusions: This case series has identified key characteristics of children with severe and critical COVID-19 during a period when vaccines were not yet available in Brazil for the study age group. However, the persistence of low vaccination coverage, largely due to parental vaccine hesitancy, continues to leave children vulnerable to potentially severe illness from COVID-19. These findings may inform the development of public health emergency contingency plans, as well as clinical protocols and care pathways, which can guide decision-making in pediatric care and ensure appropriate clinical management, ultimately improving the quality of care provided. Background/Objectives: There is a growing need for autism spectrum disorder (ASD) assessment tools that are diagnostically aligned, clinically usable, and accessible across diverse service contexts. The Diagnostic Autism Spectrum Interview—Version 2 (DASI-2) is a freely available, semi-structured clinical interview mapped directly to DSM-5 and ICD-11 criteria. This pilot study aimed to adapt DASI-2 into Hungarian and explore the (1) acceptability of DASI-2 administration, (2) agreement with prior clinical ASD diagnoses, and (3) relationship between DASI-2 observational ratings and ADOS-2 classifications. Methods: Following a multistep translation procedure, DASI-2 was administered to seven children previously assessed for ASD in a multidisciplinary Hungarian clinical setting. The assessment included a parent interview, direct assessment with the child or young person, and completion of the DASI observational record (OR1–OR4). DASI diagnostic outcomes were compared with prior clinical decisions, and OR scores were analyzed in relation to ADOS-2 classifications. Results: All participants completed the DASI-2 interview in full. Agreement with prior clinical diagnosis was found in six of seven cases (κ = 0.70, indicating substantial agreement). When exploring the one non-aligned case, the divergence in diagnostic outcome was due to broader contextual information considered by the initial clinical team which influenced clinical opinion. The five participants diagnosed with ASD showed substantially higher DASI observational scores (mean = 15.26) than the two who were not diagnosed (mean = 1.57), mirroring ADOS-2 severity classifications. Conclusions: These findings support the acceptability and preliminary validity of DASI-2. Its inclusive structured observational record may provide a practical complement to resource-intensive tools such as the ADOS-2; however, further validation in larger and more diverse samples is needed. Background/Objectives: Children with severe physical and communication disabilities face many challenges. They have very limited opportunities for upright, hands-free, self-initiated mobility. Current findings in neuroscience and theories on child development suggest that self-initiated mobility can have positive cascading effects on various developmental areas, including language and communication. This study was conducted to examine the current use of hands-free support walkers with children who have severe physical and communication disabilities and use augmentative and alternative communication and to identify the benefits and problems perceived by their parents and professionals from different disciplines. Methods: Online surveys were utilized to collect information from 127 participants, including 31 parents and 96 professionals or paraprofessionals. Results: The participants reported that these children could perform various motor activities in the hands-free support walkers to achieve different goals. Benefits identified by both parents and professionals included providing a way to exercise and stay active, improving motor control, enhancing independence, and bringing enjoyment. Professionals also observed positive impacts on communication, vocalization, use of eye contact, and problem solving. Conclusions: Results suggest that children with severe physical and communication disabilities can benefit from the upright, hands-free, self-initiated mobility provided by hands-free support walkers. Clinical implications and needs for future research are discussed. Full article

As veganism becomes more popular, the number of vegan pregnant women and children is steadily increasing. During vegan pregnancy and early childhood, there is a high risk for nutrient deficiencies that may impair child development. External factors, such as healthcare advice, social networks, and social environments, that affect the diet of vegan pregnant women, parents, and their children, as well as their approach towards dietary supplementation, have not yet been investigated. Various sources of information, combined with a lack of expertise, sparse food and nutritional health literacy, and qualitatively heterogeneous information provision by medical experts, unsettle vegan pregnant women and parents and affect their dietary choices and potentially the health of their children. The VedieS study aims to investigate potential connections between external influences and associated impacts on a vegan diet and the intake of dietary supplements (DS) of pregnant women and children. Two surveys are being conducted within the study: one targeting 1000 vegan pregnant women and parents, and another targeting 60 experts in each of five healthcare groups: gynecologists, pediatricians, general practitioners, pharmacists, and dietitians. This study is the first to examine how socio-economic, social, and further informational factors influence dietary practices during vegan pregnancy and childhood. It highlights the need for reliable, expert-led guidance, as current information sources are often inconsistent and may put these vulnerable groups at risk. Full article

Multifaceted Determinants of Varicella Vaccination Uptake Among Children Aged 1–10 Years in China: Findings of a Population-Based Survey Among 996 Parents

Background/Objectives: Chickenpox is an ongoing health threat for young children. This study aimed to investigate varicella vaccination uptake among children and its determinants at both the individual and interpersonal levels. Methods: A cross-sectional survey of parents of children aged 0–15 years and with administrative health records was conducted between September and October 2024 in Shenzhen, China. Participants were recruited through multistage random sampling. This analysis was based on a subsample of 996 parents whose children were 1–10 years old and without a prior history of chickenpox. Multivariate logistic regression models were fitted. Results: Among the participants, 47.0% reported that their children had received a varicella vaccination. Parents who believed that chickenpox was highly contagious (adjusted odds ratios [AOR]: 1.62, 95% confidence interval [CI]: 1.23, 2.13), perceived more benefits (AOR: 1.22, 95% CI: 1.05, 1.41) and cues to action (AOR: 1.33, 95% CI: 1.04, 1.69), and exhibited greater self-efficacy (AOR: 1.40, 95% CI: 1.09, 1.80) related to children’s varicella vaccination reported higher varicella vaccination uptake for their children. Greater perceived barriers related to vaccination (AOR: 0.89, 95% CI: 0.83, 0.95) and dysfunctional interactions with children (AOR: 0.97, 95% CI: 0.94, 0.99) were associated with lower varicella vaccination uptake for children. In addition, higher exposure to information encouraging parents to vaccinate their children against chickenpox (AOR: 1.24, 95%CI: 1.08, 1.41) and thoughtful consideration of the veracity of the information were associated with higher varicella vaccination uptake among children (AOR: 1.19, 95% CI: 1.05, 1.36). Conclusions: There is a strong need to promote varicella vaccination for children in China. Full article

Asthma is the leading chronic condition in children and adolescents, requiring continuous monitoring to effectively prevent and manage symptoms. Symptom monitoring can guide timely and effective self-management actions by children and their parents and inform treatment decisions by healthcare providers. This paper examines two conventional monitoring methods, including symptom-based and peak expiratory flow (PEF) monitoring, reviews early efforts to quantify respiratory symptoms, and introduces an emerging sensor-based mHealth approach. Although symptom-based monitoring is commonly used in clinical practice, its adequacy is a concern due to its subjective nature, as it primarily relies on individual perception. PEF monitoring, while objective, has shown weak correlations with actual asthma activity or lung function and suffers from suboptimal adherence among youth. To enhance objectivity in symptom monitoring, earlier efforts focused on quantifying respiratory symptoms by harnessing mechanical equipment. However, the practicality of these methods for daily use is limited due to the equipment’s bulkiness and the time- and labor-intensive nature of data processing and interpretation. As an innovative alternative, sensor-based mHealth devices have emerged to provide automatic, objective, and continuous monitoring of respiratory symptoms. These wearable technologies offer promising potential to overcome the issues of perceptual inaccuracy and poor adherence associated with conventional methods. However, many of these devices are still in developmental or testing phases, with limited data on their clinical efficacy, usability, and long-term impact on self-management behaviors. Future research and robust clinical trials are warranted to establish their role in asthma monitoring and management and improving asthma outcomes in children and adolescents. Full article

Background: The diagnosis of a disability in a child may significantly impact the entire family system. While existing literature has primarily focused on parental reaction to the diagnosis, little is known about how typically developing siblings process this event. Methods: This exploratory study presented the preliminary psychometric properties of the Reaction to Diagnosis Questionnaire—Sibling Version, adapted from an instrument originally designed to assess parental reaction to the child’s diagnosis. Following a back-translation and adaptation process, a cross-sectional study was conducted on 623 typically developing siblings (M = 24.6 years, SD = 5.76) of individuals with neurodevelopmental disorders or physical disabilities. Results: Exploratory factor analyses supported a refined 32-item questionnaire with two factors—lack of resolution versus resolution, both showing excellent internal reliability. No significant differences were found based on typically developing sibling sex, age, or type of disability of the brother/sister, while correlational analyses indicated that greater disability severity was associated with lower resolution and higher lack of resolution. Conclusions: Results suggested that the Reaction to Diagnosis Questionnaire—Sibling Version is a promising tool for assessing the reaction to the brother/sister diagnosis on behalf of the typically developing siblings. Further research is needed to confirm these results and inform intervention programs promoting well-being and adaptive family functioning. Full article

In this paper, we argue that what is sometimes at fault for the poor attendance and lack of engagement in schools observed from historically marginalized families is a missed opportunity to increase understanding or cultural relevance on the part of schools. In this paper, we use the construct of “counter stories” which has the potential to change the script on the instrumentalist demands of quantity versus quality in parent engagement. By providing examples of what we consider “quality” engagement techniques via the staff’s interpretation of their roles within one demographically rich early learning center, the strategies used to engage parents are documented. Counter-stories of practice show family-centrism as interpreted by school leaders. By describing one community context and its practices of building relationships with newcomer families, relationally driven parent engagement techniques are revealed. The authors highlight how inquiry-based methods surpass the generic approaches described in policy. When parent engagement “arises” from within parents’ motivations and informs authentic knowing (by teachers and school leaders), community systems are elevated. Professionals’ decisions about children and community groups that are informed by families’ knowledge are consequently meaningful and authentic. Full article

Background/Objectives: Neonatal pain must be treated due to its potential short- and long-term adverse effects. A frenotomy is a painful procedure where common strategies to relieve pain (oral sucrose solutions and sucking) cannot be used because the technique is performed on the tongue. Lavender essential oil (LEO) is useful in treating pain during blood sampling, heel punctures, vaccination, and frenotomies. We aimed to determine whether smelling colostrum had similar effects as inhaled LEO during frenotomies. Methods: A prospective, randomized clinical trial was carried out with neonates who underwent a frenotomy for ankyloglossia between September 2023 and June 2024. We assessed pain using the NIPS score, heart rate, oxygen saturation, and crying time. After obtaining parental informed consent, we randomized patients into experimental and control groups. In both groups, we performed swaddling, administered 1 mL of oral sucrose, and let the newborn suck for 2 min. In the experimental group, we placed a gauze pad with two drops of colostrum, whereas in the control group, we used one drop of LEO 2 cm under the neonate’s nose prior to and during the frenotomy. Results: We enrolled 142 patients (71 experimental cases and 71 controls). The experimental group showed lower crying times (28.0 vs. 40.2 s, p = 0.03). Both groups showed similar NIPS scores (1.4 vs. 1.5, p = 0.28). We observed no side effects in either of the groups. Conclusions: Inhaled colostrum and LEO help relieve pain in neonates who undergo a frenotomy for ankyloglossia and have no side effects. Aromatherapy with colostrum may decrease crying time during the frenotomy. Full article

This paper examines the importance of ‘education outside the classroom’ (EOtC) in an Australian secondary school. The primary aim was to develop a sense of belonging, build resilience, and enhance wellbeing in female students. This study investigated two cohorts of Year 9 students (aged 14–15 yrs) who participated in a four-week residential EOtC pilot program. The first cohort (Wave 1; N = 58) undertook the program alongside (N = 39) boys. The second cohort was single-sex girls (Wave 2; N = 28). A mixed-methods research design was implemented to inform experiences of students, parents, and staff and to triangulate inferences drawn from the data. Quantitative data was gained from pre- and post-program surveys with students and parents, whilst qualitative data was gathered from student focus groups, staff, and parents through semi-structured interviews to assess more nuanced impacts. School belonging was measured using the PISA six-item scale. Academic buoyancy was quantified using the four-item Academic Buoyancy Scale. Self-efficacy, peer relations, and resilience were evaluated by employing the 34-item Adolescent Girls’ Resilience Scale. The findings revealed significant improvements in students’ sense of belonging, including higher levels of school belonging than reported Australia-wide averages for 15-year-olds. Despite students’ mean academic buoyancy scores being more than a point lower than reported baseline scores for Australian high school students, it was promising to see a modest increase following the EOtC program. In conclusion, EOtC is a potent vehicle for developing a sense of belonging, enhancing resilience, and equipping students to deal with academic challenges. Full article

Bring them home, keep them home is research based in New South Wales (NSW) Australia, that aims to understand successful and sustainable reunification for Aboriginal families who have children in out-of-home care (OOHC). This research is led by Aboriginal researchers, and partners with Aboriginal organisations. It is informed by the experiences of 20 Aboriginal parents and family members, and more than 200 practitioners and professionals working in child protection and reunification. This paper traces the evolution of Bring them home, keep them home which is now at the forefront of influence for NSW child protection reforms. Using specific examples, it highlights the role of research advocacy and resistance in challenging and disrupting systems in ways that amplify the voices of Aboriginal families and communities and embeds these voices as the foundation for radical innovation for child reunification approaches. The paper shares lessons being learned and insights for Aboriginal-led research with communities in the pursuit of restorative justice, system change, and self-determination. Providing a framework for liberating Aboriginal families from child abduction systems, this paper seeks to offer a truth-telling and practical contribution to the international efforts of Indigenous resistance to child abduction systems. Background/Objectives: Executive function (EF) difficulties are increasingly recognized as closely linked to ADHD, particularly when assessed via rating scales. Methods: The present study investigated the nature of these associations, using the Conners 3 Rating Scales to assess ADHD symptoms and the Executive Function Questionnaire (EFQU) to assess EF impairments, in a sample of 1068 children (40.8% males, 38.8% females) aged 7–14 years (M = 10.7, SD = 1.74). Results: Both parent and teacher ratings revealed strong correlations, particularly between inattentive symptoms and EF difficulties, across multiple executive domains. To examine whether these associations stemmed from construct or phrasing overlap, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses were conducted. The results demonstrate that the Conners 3 and the EFQU capture distinct latent dimensions of functioning, with virtually no overlap in item content. Conclusions: The strength and consistency of the associations between these latent factors support the interpretation that, although conceptually distinct, ADHD symptoms and EF impairments are empirically intertwined in everyday functioning, as consistently reported by both parents and teachers. Interestingly, teachers provided more integrated views of behavior, while parents tended to distinguish ADHD and EF traits more clearly. These findings underscore the importance of multi-informant assessment and contextual variability in understanding children’s functioning. Full article

The literature has been scarce in addressing parental interference/family abduction and its relationship with depressive symptoms. Due to this, the objective of this study was to examine the association between family abduction/parental interference and depressive symptoms in a national sample of 11,568 children and adolescents aged 12 to 18 from Chile. Robust linear regression models were conducted to assess how these experiences are related to depressive symptoms while controlling for age. Our results show that children and adolescents who reported these experiences in their lives presented higher levels of depressive symptoms. Additionally, although all forms of caregiver victimization were associated with depressive symptoms, parental interference/family abduction also showed a significant association, even when controlling for sociodemographic variables. These findings highlight the need for attention to the phenomenon of family abduction/parental interference, especially concerning its potential associations with mental health outcomes such as depression. Theoretically, the study contributes to the limited body of research on this form of caregiver victimization, and practically, it provides evidence that may inform future prevention strategies and mental health policies targeting children and adolescents exposed to high-conflict family dynamics in the Chilean context. (1) Background: This study used latent profile analysis (LPA) to investigate family patterns of paternal and maternal responses to adolescents’ discrete emotions (happiness, sadness, and anger) and examined the relationship between these profiles and demographic factors, as well as adolescents’ emotion adjustment (emotion regulation and depressive symptoms). (2) Methods: A sample of 666 adolescents reported parental responses and their emotional adjustment; their mothers provided family information. (3) Results: (a) The LPA identified four profiles for adolescent happiness, including high enhancing but low dampening and neglect from both parents (Consistent Supportive); low enhancing but high dampening and neglect from both parents (Consistent Unsupportive); low to moderate scores on each response from both parents (Consistent Disengaging); and high maternal dampening and neglect but relatively low scores on the paternal response (Inconsistent). There were two profiles for sadness (Consistent Supportive, Consistent Unsupportive) and three for anger (Consistent Supportive, Consistent Unsupportive, Consistent Disengaging). (b) Parents with boys, higher incomes, better education, and greater marital satisfaction were likely to be classified into the Consistent Supportive profile across emotions. (c) When adolescents perceived their parents with the Consistent Supportive profile, they would show the best emotional adjustment; while for parents with the Inconsistent profile (for happiness) and the Consistent Unsupportive profile, the adolescents had the poorest outcome. Interestingly, adolescents who perceived their parents as fitting the Consistent Disengaging profile (especially for anger) exhibited comparatively less adverse adjustment. (4) Implications: A person-centered approach highlights different patterns of emotion socialization, underscores the importance of fostering parental cooperation and supportive responses to adolescents’ happiness, and suggests that joint disengagement from anger may promote healthier emotional development.
