The Hainan gibbon (Nomascus hainanus) is one of the most endangered primates globally, threatened by habitat destruction, genetic diversity loss, and ecological competition. In this study, given the critical role of the gut microbiota in host immune regulation and nutrient metabolism, we investigated the composition of and age-related variations in the gut microbiota in Hainan gibbons. Using 16S rRNA sequencing, we systematically investigated the gut microbial diversity of Hainan gibbons. We collected 41 fecal samples from Hainan Tropical Rainforest National Park, covering three age groups: juveniles (4–6 years), subadults (7–10 years), and elderly animals (≥13 years). This study found that microbiota composition changed significantly with age. Juveniles had higher microbial diversity and complexity, while subadults showed an increased abundance of Fibrobacter and Prevotella in their microbial communities, along with a Tax4Fun-predicted enrichment of functional genes related to energy metabolism, cell motility, and nervous system functions. LEfSe analysis identified statistically significant microbial taxa among different age groups, with Bacteroidota and Firmicutes being the dominant phyla across all groups with varying proportions. These results highlight the critical role of the gut microbiota in the health and adaptability of Hainan gibbons, offering insights for conservation strategies. The findings of this study are significant for understanding the changes in gut microbiota and their ecological functions across different life stages of endangered primates. Full article

The ‘Fit for 55’ policy package was presented in the European Commission’s Green Deal framework, comprising a set of proposals to improve existing energy and climate legislation. Among its main proposals was a revision of the European Union’s Emission Trading System to expand its sectoral coverage. Anticipating the possible loss of competitiveness with carbon pricing within the EU—which may lead to ‘carbon leakage’—a carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM) was included in the package. This scheme takes the form of an export tax levied by the European Union on some goods manufactured in non-carbon-taxing countries. In this paper, we provide a first-order estimate of the potential impact of CBAM on Morocco’s exports using an input–output approach. Our main findings suggest that the scheme would yield a carbon bill ranging from USD 20 to 34 million annually to Moroccan exporters in its initial phase. Morocco can mitigate such economic losses by instituting a national Emission Trading System, a tax reform, or speeding up the decarbonization of its economy. Full article

This paper investigates tax competitiveness among the EU member countries. The tax competition of countries causes both positive and negative effects on macroeconomic processes such as the effectiveness of government spending, the rationality of supply of externalities, and the length and amplitudes of business cycles. A considerable reduction of corporate tax in the EU is related to increased tax competition after new members entered the EU. Multiple criteria methods were chosen for the quantitative evaluation of EU countries from different regions of the EU. Criteria of evaluation were chosen and structured into a hierarchy. The convergence process of the new members of the EU is reinforced with the increasing tax competitiveness of such countries. Results of the multiple criteria evaluation revealed both the factors that increased the tax competitiveness of new members of the EU, and outlined the factors that hampered such competition. Since phosphorus (P) is an essential element for life, its usage and application across agricultural production systems requires great attention. Monogastric species such as pigs and poultry can significantly contribute to global food security but these animals remain highly dependent on the supply of mineral inorganic P in their feeds. Pig and poultry, which represent 70% of the global meat production, are also major P excretors and thus represent important sources of environmental P inputs. Balancing the P cycle within farming systems is crucial to achieve P sustainable and resilient livestock production. Therefore, the interconnection of animal feed, livestock farming, manure, and soil/aquatic ecosystems requires multidisciplinary approaches to improve P management. With regard to a sustainable agricultural P cycle, this study addresses aspects of feeding strategies and animal physiology (e.g., phase feeding, P conditioning, liquid feeding, phytase supplementation, genetics), soil agroecosystems (e.g., P cycling, P losses, P gains), reuse and recycling (e.g., manure, slaughter waste), measures of farmers’ economic performance (e.g., bio-economic models), and P governance/policy instruments (e.g., P quota, P tax). To reconcile the economic and ecological sustainability of animal husbandry, the strategic objective of future research will be to provide solutions for a sufficient supply of high-quality animal products from resource-efficient and economically competitive agro-systems which are valued by society and preserve soil and aquatic ecosystems.
