Towards a New MAX-DOAS Measurement Site in the Po Valley: Aerosol Optical Depth and NO2 Tropospheric VCDs

Pollutants information can be retrieved from visible (VIS) and ultraviolet (UV) diffuse solar spectra exploiting Multi-AXis Differential Optical Absorption Spectroscopy (MAX-DOAS) instruments. In May 2021, the Italian research institute CNR-ISAC acquired and deployed a MAX-DOAS system SkySpec-2D. It is located in the “Giorgio Fea” observatory in San Pietro Capofiume (SPC), in the middle of the Po Valley, where it has constantly acquired zenith and off-axis diffuse solar spectra since the 1st October 2021. This work presents the retrieved tropospheric NO2 and aerosol extinction profiles (and their columns) derived from the MAX-DOAS measurements using the newly developed DEAP retrieval code. The code has been validated both using synthetic differential Slant Column Densities (dSCDs) from the Fiducial Reference Measurements for Ground-Based DOAS Air-Quality Observations (FRM4DOAS) project and real measured data. For this purpose, DEAP results are compared with the ones obtained with three state-of-the-art retrieval codes. In addition, an inter-comparison with satellite products from Sentinel-5P TROPOMI, for the tropospheric NO2 Vertical Column Densities (VCDs), and MODIS-MAIAC for the tropospheric Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD), is performed. We find a bias of −0.6 × 1015 molec/cm2 with a standard deviation of 1.8 × 1015 molec/cm2 with respect to Sentinel-5P TROPOMI for NO2 tropospheric VCDs and of 0.04 ± 0.08 for AOD with respect to MODIS-MAIAC data. The retrieved data show that the SPC measurement site is representative of the background pollution conditions of the Po Valley. For this reason, it is a good candidate for satellite validation and scientific studies over the Po Valley. Full article

Haiyang-2D (HY-2D) is the fourth satellite in the marine dynamic satellite series established by China. It was successfully launched on 19 May 2021, marking the era of the 3-satellite network in the marine dynamic environment satellite series of China. The satellite’s precision orbit determination (POD) and validations are of great significance for ocean warning and marine altimetry missions. HY-2D is equipped with a laser reflector array (LRA), a satellite-borne Doppler Orbitography and Radiopositioning Integrated by Satellite (DORIS) receiver, and a satellite-borne dual-frequency GPS receiver named HY2 that was independently developed in China. In this paper, the quality of GPS data collected by the HY2 is analyzed based on indicators such as the multipath effect, cycle slips, and data completeness. The results suggest that the receiver can be used in POD missions involving low-Earth-orbit (LEO) satellites. The precise orbits of HY-2D are determined by the reduced-dynamics (RD) method. Apart from POD, validation of orbit accuracy is another important task for LEO POD. Therefore, two external validation methods are proposed, including carrier differential validation using one GPS satellite and inter-satellite differential validation using two GPS satellites. These are based on space-borne carrier-phase data, and the GPS satellites used for POD validation do not participate in orbit determination. The results of SLR range validation cannot illustrate the orbit accuracy in x, y, and z directions particularly, so to make validation results more intuitive, the SLR three-dimensional (3D) validation is proposed based on SLR range validation, and the RMSs in x, y, and z directions are 2.66, 3.32, and 2.69 cm, respectively. The results of SLR 3D validation are the same as those of SLR range validation, which proves that the new external validation method provided by SLR 3D is reliable. The RMSs of carrier differential validation and inter-satellite differential validation are 0.68 and 1.06 cm, respectively. The proposed validation methods are proved to be reliable. Full article

This study carries out the calibration and validation of Antenna Temperature Data Record (TDR) and Brightness Temperature Sensor Data Record (SDR) data from the last National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) Advanced Microwave Sounding Unit-A (AMSU-A) flown on the Meteorological Operational satellite programme (MetOp)-C satellite. The calibration comprises the selection of optimal space view positions for the instrument and the determination of coefficients in calibration equations from the Raw Data Record (RDR) to TDR and SDR. The validation covers the analyses of the instrument noise equivalent differential temperature (NEDT) performance and the TDR and SDR data quality from the launch until 15 November 2019. In particular, the Metop-C data quality is assessed by comparing to radiative transfer model simulations and observations from Metop-A/B AMSU-A, respectively. The results demonstrate that the on-orbit instrument NEDTs have been stable since launch and continue to meet the specifications at most channels except for channel 3, whose NEDT exceeds the specification after April 2019. The quality of the Metop-C AMSU-A data for all channels except channel 3 have been reliable since launch. The quality at channel 3 is degraded due to the noise exceeding the specification. Compared to its TDR data, the Metop-C AMSU-A SDR data exhibit a reduced and more symmetric scan angle-dependent bias against radiative transfer model simulations, demonstrating the great performance of the TDR to SDR conversion coefficients. Additionally, the Metop-C AMSU-A data quality agrees well with Metop-A/B AMSU-A data, with an averaged difference in the order of 0.3 K, which is confirmed based on Simultaneous Nadir Overpass (SNO) inter-sensor comparisons between Metop-A/B/C AMSU-A instruments via either NOAA-18 or NOAA-19 AMSU-A as a transfer. Multi- system and multi-frequency are two key factors that determine the performance of precise point positioning. Both multi-frequency and multi-system lead to new biases, which are not solved systematically. This paper concentrates on mathematical models of biases, influences of these biases, and positioning performance analysis of different observation models. The biases comprise the inter-frequency clock bias in multi-frequency and the inter-system clock bias in multi-system. The former is the residual differential code biases (DCBs) from receiver clock and satellite clock and usually occurs at the third frequency, the latter is the deviation of the receiver clock errors in different systems. Unified mathematical models of the biases are presented by analyzing the general formula of observation equations. The influences of these biases are validated by experiments with corresponding observation models. Subsequently, the experiments, which are based on the data at five globally distributed stations in Multi-Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) Experiment (MGEX) on day of year 100, 2018, assess positioning performance of different observation models with combination of frequencies (dual-frequency or triple- frequency) and systems (BeiDou Navigation Satellite System (BDS) or Global Positioning System (GPS)). The results show that the performances of triple-frequency models are almost as the same level as the dual-frequency models. They provide scientific support for the triple-frequency ambiguity-fixed solution which has a better convergence characteristic than dual-frequency ambiguity-fixed solution. Furthermore, the biases are expressed as an unified form that gives an important and valuable reference for future research on multi-frequency and multi-system precise point positioning. Full article
