Gender harassment is the most common variant of sexual harassment and is often seen in male-dominated workplaces. Importantly, persistent gender harassment produces pronounced impairment in psychological and occupational domains. The current study aimed to examine the degree to which male dominated academic degree programs are associated with higher rates of sexual harassment compared to female dominated programs. Four academic fields were chosen for their gender disparity—business, engineering, health sciences, and education. Consistent with hypotheses, cisgender women students in the college of engineering were most likely to experience gender harassment by peers and faculty. Implications and future directions are discussed. Full article

This research is focused on exploring the importance of STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education in the development of critical competencies among secondary school students in the 21st century. This was aimed to assess the impact of STEM-based activities on students’ creative and computational thinking skills. A quasi-experimental design that included 77 secondary school students from public and private schools in Bandar Lampung, Indonesia, who participated in STEM interventions for over 5 weeks, was adopted. Data were collected through creative thinking tests and questionnaires on CT and STEM attitudes. The results showed that students who participated in STEM activities exhibited significantly higher creative thinking scores compared to peers taught with the traditional curriculum. Specifically, the experimental group showed a progressive increase in weekly test scores, suggesting that STEM methods improved students’ performance over time. Structural equation modeling (SEM) disclosed strong positive associations between attitudes towards STEM, CT, and creativity. The implications of these results outlined the need to integrate STEM education into curricula to foster essential skills for future challenges. This research contributes to the understanding of effective educational strategies and also advocates for a shift towards more interactive and integrative methods in secondary education to meet the demands of the contemporary workforce. Robotics has emerged as a transformative discipline at the intersection of the engineering, computer science, and cognitive sciences. This state-of-the-art review explores the current trends, methodologies, and challenges in both robotics research and education. This paper presents a comprehensive review of the evolution of robotics, tracing its development from early automation to intelligent, autonomous systems. Key enabling technologies, such as Artificial Intelligence (AI), soft robotics, the Internet of Things (IoT), and swarm intelligence, are examined along with real-world applications in healthcare, manufacturing, agriculture, and sustainable smart cities. A central focus is placed on robotics education, where hands-on, interdisciplinary learning is reshaping curricula from K–12 to postgraduate levels. This paper analyzes instructional models including project-based learning, laboratory work, capstone design courses, and robotics competitions, highlighting their effectiveness in developing both technical and creative competencies. Widely adopted platforms such as the Robot Operating System (ROS) are briefly discussed in the context of their educational value and real-world alignment. Through case studies, institutional insights, and synthesis of academic and industry practices, this review underscores the vital role of robotics education in fostering innovation, systems thinking, and workforce readiness. The paper concludes by identifying the key challenges and future directions to guide researchers, educators, industry stakeholders, and policymakers in advancing robotics as both technological and educational frontiers. This paper investigates how sustainable STEM education is being shaped within the pre-university systems of the 22 Arab countries. By categorizing these systems into four groups based on the Global Knowledge Index and two analytical tracks, this study examines in detail the factors that enable—or hinder—the development of long-term, sustainability-oriented competencies in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Beyond pedagogical dimensions, this study emphasizes STEM education as a strategic tool for achieving national sustainable development goals (SDGs), promoting workforce readiness, and informing education policy reform. The analysis highlights the policy efforts, systemic limitations, and the need for localized strategies to integrate sustainability into the STEM curricula and teacher training. It is structured in six sections: (1) an introduction to STEM and sustainability concepts, the Global Knowledge Index, and the Arab-region education landscape; (2) research questions, methodology, and data sources; (3) analysis of Groups 1 and 2, assessing their experiences in implementing sustainability-driven STEM initiatives; (4) analysis of Groups 3 and 4, evaluating their readiness for adopting sustainable STEM programs; (5) discussion of findings in light of sustainability policy frameworks; and (6) a concluding overview with actionable recommendations to align national education systems with global sustainability goals. This article presents a comparison of two qualitative case studies. The first case study is a partnership group involving two urban secondary school teachers working with one engineer and one education faculty member where they implemented several science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) lessons over the course of an academic year. The second case study is a partnership group involving undergraduate college students working together to build a data collection device attached to a high-altitude balloon to answer a scientific question or solve an engineering problem and translate the project into engaging lessons for a K-12/secondary student audience. The studies employed a socio-cultural theoretical framework as the lens to examine the individuals’ perspectives, experiences, and engineering meaning-making processes, and to consider what these meant to the partnership itself. The methods included interviews, focus groups, field notes, and artifacts. The analysis involved multi-level coding. The findings indicated that the strength of the partnership (pre, little p, or big P) among participants influenced the strength of the secondary engineering lessons. The partnership growth implications in terms of K-12/secondary and collegiate engineering education included the engineering lesson strength, partnership, and engineering project sustainability The participant partnership meanings revolved around lesson creation, incorporating engineering ideas into the classroom, increasing communication, and increasing secondary students’ learning, while tensions arose from navigating (not quite negotiating) roles as a team. A call for attention to school–university partnerships and the voices heard in engineering partnership building are included since professional skills are becoming even more important due to advances in artificial intelligence (AI) and other technologies. Background/Objectives: Artificial intelligence (AI) holds great potential to reshape the academic paradigm. They can process large volumes of information, assist in academic literature reviews, and augment the overall quality of scientific discourse. This narrative review examines the application of various AI tools in surgical research, its present capabilities, future directions, and potential challenges. Methods: A search was performed by two independent authors for relevant studies on PubMed, Cochrane Library, Web of Science, and EMBASE databases from January 1901 until March 2025. Studies were included if they were written in English and discussed the use of AI tools in surgical research. They were excluded if they were not in English and discussed the use of AI tools in medical research. Results: Forty-two articles were included in this review. The findings underscore a range of AI tools such as writing enhancers, LLMs, search engine optimizers, image interpreters and generators, content organization and search systems, and audio analysis tools, along with their influence on medical research. Despite the multitude of benefits presented by AI tools, risks such as data security, inherent biases, accuracy, and ethical dilemmas are of concern and warrant attention. Conclusions: AI could offer significant contributions to medical research in the form of superior data analysis, predictive abilities, personalized treatment strategies, enhanced diagnostic accuracy, amplified research, educational, and publication processes. However, to unlock the full potential of AI in surgical research, we must institute robust frameworks and ethical guidelines. Full article

The aim of this study is to identify the key factors contributing to student dropout and to develop a predictive model that estimates the dropout risk of students based on their entry characteristics and enrolment registration data. Our analysis is based on the registration and academic data of 971 full-time and part-time bachelor’s students in five faculties, who were enrolled in the academic year 2021–2022 at the Latvia University of Life Sciences and Technologies (LBTU). The dropout analysis was done during the 3.5 years of study, when the students started their last semester in engineering and information technology, agriculture and food technology, economics and social sciences, and forest and environmental studies and when veterinary medicine students had completed more than half of their program of study. Survival analysis methods were used during the study. Students’ dropout risk in relation to gender, faculty, priority to study in the program, and secondary school performance (SM) was estimated using the Proportional hazard model (Cox model). The highest student dropout was observed during the first year of study. Secondary school performance was a significant predictor of students’ dropout risk; students with higher SM had a lower dropout risk (HR = 0.66, p < 0.05). As well, student dropout can be explained by faculty or study programme. Students in economics and social sciences were at lower dropout risk than the students from the other faculties. Results show the model’s concordance index was 0.59, and this indicates that additional or stronger predictors may be needed to improve model performance. Full article

Competency-based assessment in engineering education is becoming increasingly critical as the profession faces rapid technological advances and the growing need for cross-cutting competencies. This paper introduces SmartRubrics, an AI-based tool designed to support the automated generation of competency-based assessment rubrics. The development of this tool is based on a systematic literature mapping study conducted between 2019 and 2024, which identified key gaps, such as the limited integration of digital tools and the under-representation of transversal skills in current assessment practices. By addressing these gaps, SmartRubrics aims to support the standardisation, accessibility, and potential enhancement of competency-based assessment practices, aligned with UNESCO’s Sustainable Development Goal 4 (SDG4). Preliminary testing of the prototype with computer science educators has provided valuable information on the effectiveness of the tool and areas for improvement. Future work includes further experimental validation in real educational settings to assess the impact of the tool on teaching and learning practices. Full article

A Student-Centric Evaluation Survey to Explore the Impact of LLMs on UML Modeling

Unified Modeling Language (UML) diagrams serve as essential tools for visualizing system structure and behavior in software design. With the emergence of Large Language Models (LLMs) that automate various phases of software development, there is growing interest in leveraging these models for UML diagram generation. This study presents a comprehensive empirical investigation into the effectiveness of GPT-4-turbo in generating four fundamental UML diagram types: Class, Deployment, Use Case, and Sequence diagrams. We developed a novel rule-based prompt-engineering framework that transforms domain scenarios into optimized prompts for LLM processing. The generated diagrams were then synthesized using PlantUML and evaluated through a rigorous survey involving 121 computer science and software engineering students across three U.S. universities. Participants assessed both the completeness and correctness of LLM-assisted and human-created diagrams by examining specific elements within each diagram type. Statistical analyses, including paired t-tests, Wilcoxon signed-rank tests, and effect size calculations, validate the significance of our findings. The results reveal that while LLM-assisted diagrams achieve meaningful levels of completeness and correctness (ranging from 61.1% to 67.7%), they consistently underperform compared to human-created diagrams. The performance gap varies by diagram type, with Sequence diagrams showing the closest alignment to human quality and Use Case diagrams exhibiting the largest discrepancy. This research contributes a validated framework for evaluating LLM-generated UML diagrams and provides empirically-grounded insights into the current capabilities and limitations of LLMs in software modeling education. This study examines students’ perceptions of the subjects geography, mathematics, and computer science in integrated science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) lessons. Although the importance of an integrated approach in STEM education is emphasized, researchers are not clear about whether students perceive connections between the subjects on the one hand and subject-specific working methods and content in integrated lessons on the other. Data was collected in an integrated teaching unit on the sustainability of apples using an open-ended digital questionnaire in to two ninth grade classes in Hamburg, Germany (n = 38); this data was analyzed using qualitative content analysis. The results reveal that students perceive the subjects differently, but similarities can also be identified. While subject-specific content is perceived—such as the use of maps in geography, the calculation of volumes in mathematics, and Dijkstra’s algorithm in computer science—methodological connections, such as calculating, analyzing diagrams, or solving problems, are anchored across disciplines. This suggests that the subject-specific contents are not lost in integrating lessons, and that connections among the subjects are, to a certain extent, promoted. Full article

Building Information Modeling (BIM) concepts are permeating the approach to the design of buildings and landscapes for the architectural, engineering, and construction sectors. Recent regulations require that even medium–small-size public works are managed through BIM-driven design. These circumstances have led to an increase in research on the topic. The expansion of the demand of BIM-skilled professionals urges higher education institutions to re-engineer their design programs. The aim of this paper is to evaluate this academic education transition in the Department of Agricultural Sciences at the University of Sassari, Italy. The method consists of a BIM academic education assessment framework based on ten criteria clustered into three macro-issues. The application of this framework to the assessment of three diploma final theses signals that some actions have been undertaken (i.e., introducing BIM basic concepts in rural building and landscape design, stimulating interest in students, clarifying the dimensions of BIM, and promoting the concept of 3D object design and management), but still, much work must be carried out. The work confirms typical barriers to the implementation of BIM concepts in the core curriculum and the need to mobilize the whole educational ecosystem to achieve satisfactory progress toward effective innovation in contemporary BIM-led design teaching. This work represents the first attempt to evaluate the progress of the Department of Agricultural Sciences, University of Sassari, toward the integration of BIM concepts in its courses and to position this transition in an international panorama. In the face of escalating sustainability challenges globally, such as climate change, poverty, inequality, and injustices, the need for a systematic approach to tackle them through the infusion of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in higher education has become increasingly critical. This article explores the crucial issue of professionalizing academic teaching, emphasizing the readiness of academic teachers to cope with sustainability and SDGs in higher education. Using the Stages of Concern Theory and the Concerns-Based Adoption Model (CBAM) to professionalize academic teaching to address SDGs in teaching, learning, and the curriculum, a sample of 1566 academic teachers in nine Latin American universities responded to the survey. This study aimed to answer two key questions, as follows: (1) How do the years of teaching experience affect academic staff’s stages of concern? (2) How do different academic teaching areas influence the academic staff’s stages of concern? The trend reveals that faculty members with fewer than four years of service scored higher than those with twenty or more years. Similarly, academic teaching staff from the Education Sciences have a significantly higher mean score and effect size than faculty members from the Humanities, Engineering, Social Sciences, Sciences, and Health Sciences across all stages of concern. However, despite these differences, professional development initiatives should be designed to match all teaching staff regardless of years of service and subject area by encouraging teamwork and increasing understanding of the critical importance of transformative teaching and learning. In the last decade, Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) education has rapidly evolved and increasingly makes use of innovative technologies. This paper aims to explore and analyze the research on integrating the Internet of Things (IoT) within STEM education and outline key aspects and emerging trends. A complete picture of the recent ten years is gained by gathering bibliometric data from the Scopus and Web of Science scientific databases. Two search queries combining IoT, STEM education, and security were submitted to extract relevant publications and obtain insight into the explored area. The manual content analysis of the study results and publications outlines several key roles of IoT in implementing STEM educational practices, which are conceptualized to reflect user viewpoints. Widespread IoT applications in STEM at different educational levels are discussed and summarized. The special focus on security aspects showed that they are underrepresented, evidenced by the small number of publications related to IoT in STEM education. The importance of including topics aimed at designing and implementing secure IoT applications in STEM-oriented curricula and courses is also discussed. Full article

The acceptance of myths about intimate partner violence against women by university students can lead to inappropriate and biased professional interventions due to their gender blindness. The aim of this study is to analyze the acceptance of myths about IPVAW among college students, considering differences by gender and degree course. To do this, we conducted a survey with 1531 first-year college students (55.8% women; mean age 18.89 years) and found that a third of the students did not reject the IPVAW myths and a third of them normalized violence. We also found a higher level of acceptance of violence minimization myths in men than in women, especially in Social Sciences and Engineering. The study reveals the need to educate future professionals about IPVAW myths, with an emphasis on minimization and normalization of violence. It also provides useful information for designing awareness programs. Full article
