This article presents the results of research on the possibility of extruding oxygen-free copper pipes in bridge dies. The possibility of continuous production of a finished product of any length with a uniformly deformed wall was analysed. One of the most important elements of the work was to determine the shape of the tool (die and bridge) that would allow durable connection of the material. Numerical studies conducted using the commercial computer programme FORGE®NxT 2.1, including analysis of the distribution of material temperature and hydrostatic pressure in the welding zone of the bridge die affecting the copper joint during the manufacture of tubular profiles, confirmed the validity of the research issue. The results of the numerical studies were supplemented by laboratory tests, confirming the accuracy of the selected variant of the finished product manufacturing process. The process of bonding under conditions of two-part material compression was used for physical modelling of copper welding. The tests were conducted using the Gleeble 3800 metallurgical process simulator with the PocketJaw module. Based on the analysis of the obtained results, it was found that for tubes with a wall-thickness-to-inner-diameter ratio of 0.5, it is justified to use tools with a longer sizing section and welding chamber, as well as a larger mandrel generating-line angle within the welding chamber. The conventional methods for producing large-diameter pipes, such as extrusion and winding fusion welding, suffer from various drawbacks including difficulties in forming, complex molds, and high costs. Moreover, the flexibility and production efficiency of traditional manufacturing processes are relatively low. To address these challenges, this study proposes a new manufacturing process for polymer melt jetting and stacking based on fused deposition modeling (FDM) and rolling forming principles. This innovative approach aims to overcome the limitations of conventional methods and improve the flexibility and production efficiency in large-diameter pipe manufacturing. In the polymer melt jetting and stacking process, a plastic melt with a specific temperature and pressure is extruded by an extruder. The melt is then injected through the nozzle embedded in the previous layer of the pipe blank. By utilizing the localized rolling action of the forming device and adjusting the diameter using a diameter adjustment device, the newly injected plastic melt bonds with the previous layer of the pipe blank. Finally, the continuous large-diameter plastic pipe is formed through cooling and solidification. Experimental investigations demonstrate that the polymer melt jetting and stacking process can produce pipes with diameters ranging from 780 mm to 850 mm and thicknesses of 20 mm to 25 mm. The radial tensile strength, impact strength, and microstructural orientation of the produced pipes exhibit superior performance compared to those in the axial direction. Additionally, process parameters such as rolling speed, cooling temperature, melt extrusion speed, and tractive velocity significantly influence the microstructure and mechanical properties of the pipes. Hot-melt extrusion is increasingly applied in the pharmaceutical area as a continuous processing technology, used to design custom products by co-processing drugs together with functional excipients. In this context, the residence time and processing temperature during extrusion are critical process parameters for ensuring the highest product qualities, particularly of thermosensitive materials. Within this study, a novel strategy is proposed to predict the residence time distribution and melt temperature during pharmaceutical hot-melt extrusion processes based on experimental data. To do this, an autogenic extrusion mode without external heating and cooling was applied to process three polymers (Plasdone S-630, Soluplus and Eudragit EPO) at different specific feed loads, which were set by the screw speed and the throughput. The residence time distributions were modeled based on a two-compartment approach that couples the behavior of a pipe and a stirred tank. The throughput showed a substantial effect on the residence time, whereas the influence of the screw speed was minor. On the other hand, the melt temperatures during extrusion were mainly affected by the screw speed compared to the influence of the throughput. Finally, the compilation of model parameters for the residence time and the melt temperature within design spaces serve as the basis for an optimized prediction of pharmaceutical hot-melt extrusion processes. Irrigation tubes based on biodegradable polymers were prepared via an extrusion-drawing process by Irritec and compared to conventional pipes made of high-density polyethylene (HDPE). A commercial polylactide/poly (butyleneadipate-co-butyleneterephthalate) (PLA/PBAT) blend (Bio-Flex®) and Mater-Bi® were used. The polymers were characterized from rheological and mechanical points of view. Irrigation pipes were subjected to photoaging with continued exposure to UV radiation up to 22 days. The degradability in the soil of irrigation tube samples was studied. The influence of temperature and UV irradiation on soil burial degradation was investigated. A soil burial degradation test was carried out at 30 °C and 50 °C for up to 70 days. The degree of degradation was evaluated from the weight loss percentage. The degradation rate of irrigation tube samples based on Mater-Bi® was higher at 30 °C and was stimulated after 14 days of UV irradiation. Higher temperatures or UV aging encouraged the disintegration in soil of Bio-Flex®-based irrigation tubes. Furthermore, tube samples, before and after UV and soil burial degradation, were analyzed by Attenuated Total Reflection-Fourier Transform Infra-Red (ATR-FTIR) spectroscopy. Full article
