The COVID-19 pandemic has exposed and intensified structural tensions surrounding work−life balance, precarity, and gender inequalities in academia. This paper examines the spatial, temporal, and emotional disruptions experienced by early-career and precarious researchers in Italy during the first national lockdown (March–April 2020) and their engagement in remote academic work. Adopting an exploratory and qualitative approach, the study draws on ten narrative video interviews and thirty participant-generated images to investigate how structural dimensions—such as gender, class, caregiving responsibilities, and the organizational culture of the neoliberal university—shaped these lived experiences. The findings highlight the implosion of boundaries between paid work, care, family life, and personal space and how this disarticulation exacerbated existing inequalities, particularly for women and caregivers. By interpreting both visual and narrative data through a sociological lens on gender, work, and organizations, the paper contributes to current debates on the transformation of academic labor and the reshaping of temporal work regimes through the everyday use of digital technologies in contemporary neoliberal capitalism. It challenges the individualization of discourses on productivity and flexibility and calls for gender-sensitive, structurally informed policies that support equitable and sustainable transitions in work and family life, in line with European policy frameworks. Video surveillance systems have become pervasive in contemporary society, prompting growing concerns about their psychological and behavioral effects on individuals. This study investigates how perceived surveillance influences self-censorship and behavioral regulation in monitored environments, drawing on the conceptual framework of panoptic self-regulation and surveillance-induced anxiety. A structured questionnaire was administered to 358 university students, and data were analyzed using exploratory and confirmatory factor analysis to validate latent constructs, followed by ordinal logistic regression and mediation analysis to test key hypotheses. The results indicate that individuals who perceive higher psychological pressure due to surveillance are more likely to modify their behavior, exhibiting heightened self-awareness and restraint. Additionally, belief in the active monitoring of surveillance footage significantly amplifies behavioral vigilance. The perception of the technological omnipresence of surveillance further intensifies psychological discomfort, which mediates behavioral change. These findings conceptualize video surveillance as a socio-technical system that exerts behavioral influence through internalized psychological mechanisms. The study highlights the importance of considering the unintended consequences of surveillance technologies on autonomy and freedom, and it suggests that regulatory frameworks should account not only for legal compliance but also for the psychological impact of surveillance. The results provide empirical support for viewing surveillance systems as dynamic regulators of human behavior. Full article

This paper examines how Marley Dias’ activism on Instagram promotes racial justice, Black feminist thought, and youth mobilization through digital storytelling, representation, and audience engagement. Using a mixed-methods analysis of 744 posts published between 2016 and 2025, the study combined critical thematic coding, temporal mapping, and engagement metrics to analyze the discursive and emotional strategies behind Dias’ activism. Five key themes were identified as central to her activist work: diversity in literature, lack girl empowerment, racial justice, Black representation, and educational advocacy. The findings reveal that Dias strategically tailors her messages to suit Instagram’s unique features, using carousels and videos to enhance visibility, foster intimacy, and provide depth in education. Posts that focused on identity, aesthetics, and empowerment garnered the highest levels of engagement, while posts that concentrated on structural issues received lower, yet still significant, interaction. The paper argues that Dias’ Instagram account serves as a dynamic platform for youth-led Black feminist resistance, where cultural production, civic education, and emotional impact converge. This case underscores the political potential of digital literacies and encourages a reconsideration of how youth-driven digital activism is reshaping contemporary public discourse, agency, and knowledge production in the social media age. Background: Airway management in otolaryngology presents unique challenges due to shared airway access, altered anatomy, and specific procedural requirements. This article examines current techniques and oxygenation strategies across various ENT procedures to provide a guide for otolaryngologists. Methods: A narrative review was performed of the contemporary literature, focusing on airway techniques in ENT surgery, including laryngeal surgery, pediatric bronchoscopy, transoral surgery, and trauma and emergency scenarios. A systematic search for difficult airway guidelines was performed using the EMBASE, Pubmed, and Cochrane databases to examine where guidelines are published. Results: The key areas for specialist airway management included laryngeal surgery in the tubeless field and adjuncts for emergency situations. High-flow nasal oxygen (HFNO), jet ventilation, video laryngoscopy, and specialized tubes emerged as key technological advances, improving safety and outcomes. A systematic search identified 947 difficult airway articles across 82 publishers. These were predominantly in anesthetic journals (n = 301), with limited representation in the otolaryngology literature (n = 8) and limited guidance concerning awake surgical tracheostomies under local anesthetic. Awake tracheal intubation and emergency front-of-neck access were identified as key techniques across multiple publications. Conclusions: Modern ENT airway management requires multidisciplinary planning, advanced equipment familiarity, and procedure-specific techniques. Despite having the expertise to perform the gold standard, the limited otolaryngology literature on difficult airways suggests that guidelines are primarily developed by the anesthetic community. Forest fires pose an escalating global threat, severely impacting ecosystems, public health, and economies. Timely detection, especially during early stages, is critical for effective intervention. In this study, we propose a novel deep learning-based framework that augments the YOLOv4 object detection architecture with a modified EfficientNetV2 backbone and Efficient Channel Attention (ECA) modules. The backbone substitution leverages compound scaling and Fused-MBConv/MBConv blocks to improve representational efficiency, while the lightweight ECA blocks enhance inter-channel dependency modeling without incurring significant computational overhead. Additionally, we introduce a domain-specific preprocessing pipeline employing Canny edge detection, CLAHE + Jet transformation, and pseudo-NDVI mapping to enhance fire-specific visual cues in complex natural environments. Experimental evaluation on a hybrid dataset of forest fire images and video frames demonstrates substantial performance gains over baseline YOLOv4 and contemporary YOLO variants (YOLOv5–YOLOv9), with the proposed model achieving 97.01% precision, 95.14% recall, 93.13% mAP, and 92.78% F1-score. Furthermore, our model outperforms fourteen state-of-the-art approaches across standard metrics, confirming its efficacy, generalizability, and suitability for real-time deployment in UAV-based and edge computing platforms. These findings highlight the synergy between architectural optimization and domain-aware preprocessing for high-accuracy, low-latency wildfire detection systems. Full article

Traditional academic discourse has long prioritized published sources—such as monographs, peer-reviewed journal articles, conference proceedings, and legal or regulatory documents—as the sole authoritative references for scientific inquiry. While these sources undoubtedly provide a validated foundation of disciplinary knowledge, they also represent the codification of past insights and often lag behind emerging developments. This paper critically examines the limitations of this conventional epistemic framework and argues for its deliberate extension. In an era characterized by rapid information dissemination and knowledge creation across diverse platforms, a significant proportion of relevant expertise now resides outside the boundaries of traditional literature. Insights from domain experts, practitioners, real-time media (e.g., news reports, podcasts, video content), original data collection, experimental inquiry, and scholarly dialog increasingly constitute valuable sources of scientific knowledge. Drawing a parallel to data-driven disciplines, where historical records are complemented by real-time analytics and user-derived insights, this article outlines the categories of such contemporary knowledge that warrant academic recognition and proposes rigorous methodologies for their systematic integration into scholarly work. This article examines the correlation between “trendy” musical features and contemporary worship songs for kids. We engage in music video analysis, comparing three songs from a range of contemporary worship children’s ministries to critically examine the messages that their children’s covers convey. Further, we question how contemporary worship music videos form children’s preferences and musical tastes, drawing on Lucy Green’s writing on musical taste formation and intersonic properties (2008). We argue that when children’s religious and musical experiences are formed by adults’ assumptions of their preferences—including that they prefer fun, cool, and trendy music—their overall experience of Christian music may be limited. Current industrial robotic manipulators have made their lack of flexibility evident. The systems must know beforehand the piece and its position. To address this issue, contemporary approaches typically employ learning-based techniques, which rely on extensive amounts of data. To obtain vast data, an often sought tool is an extensive grasp dataset. This work introduces our Physics-Based Self-Supervised Grasp Pose Detection (PBSS-GPD) pipeline for model-based grasping point detection, which is useful for generating grasp pose datasets. Given a gripper-object pair, it samples grasping pose candidates using a modified version of GPD (implementing inner-grasps, CAD support…) and quantifies their quality using the MuJoCo physics engine and a grasp quality metric that takes into account the pose of the object over time. The system is optimized to run on CPU in headless-parallelized mode, with the option of running in a graphical interface or headless and storing videos of the process. The system has been validated obtaining grasping poses for a subset of Egad! objects using the Franka Panda two-finger gripper, compared with state-of-the-art grasp generation pipelines and tested in a real scenario. While our system achieves similar accuracy compared to a contemporary approach, 84% on the real-world validation, it has proven to be effective at generating grasps with good centering 18 times faster than the compared system. With the advancement of digital technologies and the gradual waning of the pandemic’s impact, digital nomads have attracted significant attention from academia and industry as an emerging social group. Existing studies regarding the distribution and destination selection preferences of digital nomads remain lacking. This study aims to investigate the distribution patterns and destination selection preferences of Chinese digital nomads, guided by the lifestyle migration theory. Specifically, we address the following research questions: Where do Chinese digital nomads choose to sojourn post-pandemic, and what factors influence their destination preferences? Using a qualitative approach based on grounded theory, we analyze text data from China’s largest video-based social platform to uncover key factors shaping digital nomads’ choices. The findings reveal that Chinese digital nomads consider five key dimensions when selecting a destination: basic living conditions, social environment, work opportunities, travel experience, and local integrated environment. Notably, compared to traditional migrant groups, digital nomads demonstrate stronger online and sharing behaviors in work and social interactions. Additionally, “travel” is identified as a new category. This study makes a theoretical contribution by expanding the application of lifestyle migration theory to digital nomadism, offering new insights into contemporary migration behaviors. It also provides practical guidance for travel destination planning and management to better accommodate the preferences of this emerging group. Full article

Contemporary climate change affects not only human beings and natural ecosystems but tangible cultural heritage, too. Understanding and appreciating climate change’s influence on built cultural heritage involves raising awareness of vulnerability and resilience issues. Hence, educators need to develop integrated approaches to teaching the protection and preservation of architectural heritage from climate change, including the creation of educational resources, including serious video games, to teach climate resilience and vulnerability. In this context, the authors developed two 3D maze video games—“Let Us Save Venice” and the Vulnerability game—focused on engaging students and raising awareness of climate heritage issues. The article discusses the results from the experimental validation of the Vulnerability game and tries to answer how game design enhanced by using the revised Bloom taxonomy and active collaboration with domain specialists can improve learning outcomes, learnability factors, and game experience. The findings suggest that the maze games can effectively supplement traditional teaching approaches in raising awareness and teaching climate resilience in cultural heritage contexts. Full article

This study explores the Potaxie, Fifes, and Tilinx subcultures on TikTok, examining their origins, characteristics, and cultural significance. Originating from a viral video in 2020, the Potaxie subculture emerged within the Spanish-speaking LGBTQ+ community and evolved to symbolise inclusivity and gender equality. Potaxies use vibrant aesthetics influenced by Japanese and Korean pop culture to express their identities and resistance. In contrast, Fifes, associated with cisgender heterosexual men, embody traditional patriarchal values, often sexist and homophobic, creating a narrative of resistance between the groups. The Tilinx, symbolic descendants of the Potaxies, are inspired by ballroom culture and drag houses, with “Potaxie mothers” continuing the fight for inclusion and diversity. Using a mixed-methods approach, including quantitative analysis through the TikTok API and qualitative content analysis via MAXQDA and Python, this study provides a comprehensive understanding of the subculture that accumulates over 2.3 billion interactions. The findings highlight how TikTok serves as a platform for identity construction, cultural resistance, and the redefinition of social norms. Additionally, the study examines how digital platforms mediate intersectional experiences, favouring certain types of content through algorithms, and how participants navigate these opportunities and constraints to express their intersecting identities. The implications for communication strategies, youth policies, educational plans, and research on the commercialization of these subcultures are profound, offering insights into the transformative potential of social media in shaping contemporary cultural and social narratives. In contemporary wildlife conservation, drones have become essential for the non-invasive monitoring of animal populations and habitats. However, the sensitive data captured by drones, including images and videos, require robust encryption to prevent unauthorized access and exploitation. This paper presents a novel encryption algorithm designed specifically for safeguarding wildlife data. The proposed approach integrates one-dimensional and two-dimensional memory cellular automata (1D MCA and 2D MCA) with a bitwise XOR operation as an intermediate confusion layer. The 2D MCA, guided by chaotic rules from the sine-exponential (SE) map, utilizes varying neighbor configurations to enhance both diffusion and confusion, making the encryption more resilient to attacks. A final layer of 1D MCA, controlled by pseudo-random number generators, ensures comprehensive diffusion and confusion across the image. The SHA-256 hash of the input image is used to derive encryption parameters, providing resistance against plaintext attacks. Extensive performance evaluations demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed scheme, which balances security and complexity while outperforming existing algorithms. Full article

This study investigates the degree to which pre-service interdisciplinary groups of undergraduate education candidates recognize co-teaching skills and behaviors in practice. With the increasing emphasis on collaborative teaching models in contemporary educational settings, understanding how future educators perceive and identify effective co-teaching practices is crucial for enhancing educational preparation programs (EPPs). Using a mixed-methods approach, this study analyzed consensus ratings from an interdisciplinary assignment that asked candidates to work collaboratively while identifying best practices in co-teaching across example and non-example videos. Both quantitative and qualitative data were collected using student ratings and videos of group discussion for consensus scoring. Quantitative data were collected using consensus ratings for each indicator on the observation checklist. Qualitative data derived from video transcripts of the consensus rating sessions illuminated the process each group used and reasons each group provided for consensus ratings. The findings reveal varying degrees of recognition and understanding of co-teaching skills, highlighting both strengths and areas for improvement in the candidates’ ability to identify and apply these practices. This study provides valuable insights into the preparedness of pre-service educators for collaborative teaching environments and offers recommendations for integrating co-teaching competencies more effectively into EPPs. In this article, I analyse the function of supporting child-characters in contemporary videogames. I integrate Stephen Zimmerly’s typology of sidekicks in Young Adult literature with critical writing on the ‘Daddening’ of videogames, a coinage that refers to the rise in the number of videogames that centre on the filial bond between a father figure and a child. Bringing these ideas into conversation with each other allows me to expand Zimmerly’s sidekick typology to include the ‘Ludic Gateway’, the ‘Morality Certificate’, and the ‘Disciplinary Tool’. I explore each category in greater depth using two case studies: The Last of Us series (2012; 2014; 2020) and the God of War series (2008; 2018; 2022). These commercially successful, critically acclaimed franchises rely on young deuteragonists to humanize and redeem the gruff, aggressive, violent male player character. Furthermore, the child sidekicks also serve to regulate the player’s in-game behaviour by way of a parasocial relationship. Using a close reading approach, I demonstrate that the supporting child-characters function as meta-critical devices to discipline gaming communities and the video game medium itself. Full article

The Impact of Short-Form Video and Optimistic Bias on Engagement in Oral Health Prevention: Integrating a KAP Model

College students are recognized as a demographic particularly susceptible to higher oral health risks due to irregular and unhealthy habits. While previous research has underscored these risks through descriptive studies within this group, a significant gap persists in the literature regarding the impact of contemporary media, specifically oral-health-related content, on the engagement in oral health prevention among Chinese college students. To address this gap, this study, guided by the extended knowledge–attitude–practice (KAP) theory model, explores the direct, mediated, and serially mediated mechanisms through which exposure to oral health short-form videos on Douyin influences their participation in oral health prevention. An empirical cross-sectional online survey was conducted, with valid data (N = 421) analyzed using descriptive statistics and hierarchical regression. Mediation and serial mediation analyses were also performed using SPSS version 25.0. The analysis revealed that exposure to oral health short-form videos had a positive direct effect on both oral health knowledge and the reduction of optimistic bias among Chinese college students. Furthermore, a significant serial mediation effect of oral health knowledge and oral health attitude was identified. The findings underscore the substantial applicability and explanatory power of the extended KAP theory model in understanding engagement in oral health prevention. Full article
