For people who have experienced a spinal cord injury or an amputation, the recovery of sensation and motor control could be incomplete despite noteworthy advances with invasive neural interfaces. Our objective is to explore the feasibility of a novel biohybrid robotic hand model to investigate aspects of tactile sensation and sensorimotor integration with a pre-clinical research platform. Our new biohybrid model couples an artificial hand with biological neural networks (BNN) cultured in a multichannel microelectrode array (MEA). We decoded neural activity to control a finger of the artificial hand that was outfitted with a tactile sensor. The fingertip sensations were encoded into rapidly adapting (RA) or slowly adapting (SA) mechanoreceptor firing patterns that were used to electrically stimulate the BNN. We classified the coherence between afferent and efferent electrodes in the MEA with a convolutional neural network (CNN) using a transfer learning approach. The BNN exhibited the capacity for functional specialization with the RA and SA patterns, represented by significantly different robotic behavior of the biohybrid hand with respect to the tactile encoding method. Furthermore, the CNN was able to distinguish between RA and SA encoding methods with 97.84% ± 0.65% accuracy when the BNN was provided tactile feedback, averaged across three days in vitro (DIV). This novel biohybrid research platform demonstrates that BNNs are sensitive to tactile encoding methods and can integrate robotic tactile sensations with the motor control of an artificial hand. This opens the possibility of using biohybrid research platforms in the future to study aspects of neural interfaces with minimal human risk. Full article

In order to advance the development of sensors fabricated with monofunctional sensation systems capable of a versatile response to tactile, thermal, gustatory, olfactory, and auditory sensations, mechanoreceptors fabricated as a single platform with an electric circuit require investigation. In addition, it is essential to resolve the complicated structure of the sensor. In order to realize the single platform, our proposed hybrid fluid (HF) rubber mechanoreceptors of free nerve endings, Merkel cells, Krause end bulbs, Meissner corpuscles, Ruffini endings, and Pacinian corpuscles mimicking the bio-inspired five senses are useful enough to facilitate the fabrication process for the resolution of the complicated structure. This study used electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) to elucidate the intrinsic structure of the single platform and the physical mechanisms of the firing rate such as slow adaption (SA) and fast adaption (FA), which were induced from the structure and involved the capacitance, inductance, reactance, etc. of the HF rubber mechanoreceptors. In addition, the relations among the firing rates of the various sensations were clarified. The adaption of the firing rate in the thermal sensation is the opposite of that in the tactile sensation. The firing rates in the gustation, olfaction, and auditory sensations at frequencies of less than 1 kHz have the same adaption as in the tactile sensation. The present findings are useful not only in the field of neurophysiology, to research the biochemical reactions of neurons and brain perceptions of stimuli, but also in the field of sensors, to advance salient developments in sensors mimicking bio-inspired sensations. The development of a bio-hybrid tactile sensor array that incorporates a skin analogue comprised of alginate encapsulated fibroblasts is described. The electrical properties are modulated by mechanical stress induced during contact, and changes are detected by a ten-channel dual-electrode impedance sensing array. By continuously monitoring the impedance of the sensor array at a fixed frequency, whilst normal and tangential loads are applied to the skin surface, transient mechanotransduction has been observed. The results demonstrate the effectiveness and feasibility of the preliminary prototype bio-hybrid tactile sensor. Full article

This paper reviews the state of the art of artificial tactile sensing, with a particular focus on bio-hybrid and fully-biological approaches. To this aim, the study of physiology of the human sense of touch and of the coding mechanisms of tactile information is a significant starting point, which is briefly explored in this review. Then, the progress towards the development of an artificial sense of touch are investigated. Artificial tactile sensing is analysed with respect to the possible approaches to fabricate the outer interface layer: synthetic skin versus bio-artificial skin. With particular respect to the synthetic skin approach, a brief overview is provided on various technologies and transduction principles that can be integrated beneath the skin layer. Then, the main focus moves to approaches characterized by the use of bio-artificial skin as an outer layer of the artificial sensory system. Within this design solution for the skin, bio-hybrid and fully-biological tactile sensing systems are thoroughly presented: while significant results have been reported for the development of tissue engineered skins, the development of mechanotransduction units and their integration is a recent trend that is still lagging behind, therefore requiring research efforts and investments. In the last part of the paper, application domains and perspectives of the reviewed tactile sensing technologies are discussed. Full article
