How Did the COVID-19 Lockdown Affect Maternal Vitamin D (25(OH)D) Levels in Pregnant Women through Improved Air Quality?

Background: During the 2019 coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, lockdown was implemented, which likely reduced maternal 25(OH)D levels in pregnancy due to reduced sun exposure from social distancing measures and confinement at home. At the same time, however, due to the lockdown and the ban on the free movement of vehicles, the emissions of many atmospheric pollutants also decreased. We know that air pollution and low ground level ultraviolet B radiation (UVB; 290–315) can deteriorate the body’s vitamin D status in healthy women living in a polluted area, which plays a significant independent role in vitamin D deficiency (VDD) and, hence, residence can be one of the main reasons of vitamin D status in women. The reduction in air pollution likely produced positive changes in maternal 25(OH)D levels. Methods: We studied serum 25(OH)D in mothers who came for delivery, with stratified random sampling, from 27 September 2019 to April 14, 2021. We divided our sample into the pre-COVID period and the post-COVID period. Quantitative results of 25(OH)D vitamin levels on the mother were converted to qualitative variables assessing lack of 25(OH)D, adequacy, deficiency, and severe deficiency of maternal concentrations and, thus, defined. The results of 25(OH)D are presented as means ± standard deviations or by frequencies and percentages. The Chi-square test was used to find an association between maternal 25(OH)D concentrations within the COVID-19 period. Results: The results of our study showed a paradox. The mean values of 25(OH)D levels of the mothers were statistically significantly higher during the COVID-19 period compared to the pre-COVID-19 period. Conclusions: In conclusion, pregnant women should be encouraged to lead a healthier lifestyle, avoid being outside during rush hours, take nature walks, not smoke, exercise, take leisurely morning walks in the sun, and taking take their vitamin D supplements, which are recommended according to the gestational age, imitating all that they did during the pandemic, in order to avoid VDD. (1) Background: Basic vital signs change during normal pregnancy as they reflect the adaptation of maternal physiology. Electronic wearables like fitness bracelets have the potential to provide vital signs continuously in the home environment of pregnant women. (2) Methods: We performed a prospective observational study from November 2019 to November 2020 including healthy pregnant women, who recorded their wrist skin temperature, heart rate, heart rate variability, and breathing rate using an electronic wearable. In addition, eight emotions were assessed weekly using five-point Likert scales. Descriptive statistics and a multivariate model were applied to correlate the physiological parameters with maternal emotions. (3) Results: We analyzed data from 23 women using the electronic wearable during pregnancy. We calculated standard curves for each physiological parameter, which partially differed from the literature. We showed a significant association of several emotions like feeling stressed, tired, or happy with the course of physiological parameters. (4) Conclusions: Our data indicate that electronic wearables are helpful for closely observing vital signs in pregnancy and to establish modern curves for the physiological course of these parameters. In addition to physiological adaptation mechanisms and pregnancy disorders, emotions have the potential to influence the course of physiological parameters in pregnancy. Full article

Assessing Indoor Environmental Quality in a Crowded Low-Quality Built Environment: A Case Study

Home heating, cooling and ventilation are a major concern for those living in low-quality built environments, particularly those with high occupancy rates (crowded houses). In New Zealand, both owner-occupiers and tenants can experience problems associated with poor Indoor Environmental Quality (IEQ), such as poor thermal comfort and dampness, when Heating Ventilation and Air-Conditioning (HVAC) systems are not installed, improperly installed or too expensive to run. Occupants of poorer households are the most affected by high installation or running costs of HVAC systems, and are also more likely to live in households with a higher level of crowding. Poor IEQ in housing is associated with adverse health outcomes, particularly respiratory illness. This paper outlines the IEQ problems experienced by households living in an area of New Zealand with higher levels deprivation and shows how an HVAC system could be employed to remedy poor IEQ. This report presents a case study of a house with poor IEQ that was selected from a survey conducted across 24 homes in the Manukau, Auckland region of New Zealand. The IEQ results are presented for this house, which performs poorly in terms of relative humidity, temperature and thermal comfort. This house is then analysed using the computational fluid dynamics (CFD) approach in ANSYS CFX 2021R1 based on the American Society of Heating, Refrigeration and Airconditioning Engineers (ASHRAE) standard 55-2017 and a model of temperature and air flow is created in the software, which can identify ways to improve these parameters in the house. These results are compared with the New Zealand Healthy Homes Standards 2019. The simulation showed the system was capable of lifting the indoor temperature to above 21 , eliminating cold spots and improving thermal comfort, and reduced relative humidity to below 50%.
