Drought stress during the reproductive phase of sunflower can significantly reduce achene yield by affecting inflorescence size, nectar quality, and pollinator activity. This study aimed to analyze the morphological characteristics of the reproductive region, quantify nectar sugar components, and evaluate pollinator presence and pollination success in wild Helianthus species as an important genetic resource for breeding cultivated sunflowers under drought conditions. Morphological investigations were conducted during the flowering and achene development phases with a stereo microscope and calipers. Nectar sugar concentrations were analyzed via HPLC, and pollinator presence was monitored twice a week for two months. This study highlights the correlation between evaluated traits, emphasizing their importance as yield indicators. Significant differences were observed in reproductive characters, nectar quality, and pollination success among the species. Helianthus annuus and Helianthus argophyllus exhibited superior reproductive performance with high nectar sugar concentrations and larger inflorescences, enabling successful pollination and higher achene yield. In contrast, Helianthus debilis demonstrated lower reproductive efficiency, with a higher percentage of empty achenes. These findings provide valuable insights for breeding programs, highlighting H. argophyllus and H. annuus as promising genetic resources for developing sunflower genotypes with increased yield and improved floral traits adapted to drought conditions. Launaea is a polymorphic genus with inter- and intraspecific inconsistencies. The study aimed to revise the classification and identification of Launaea species in Egypt. The study also aimed to assess the inter- and intraspecific variation among taxa using macro- and micromorphological characters. Numerical analysis was carried out on 156 specimens, which were collected from 63 sites in Egypt. The results revealed that L. arabica, L. capitata, L. intybacea and L. spinosa were significantly (p-value < 2.2 × 10−16 ***) discriminated from the other species at a high dissimilarity level. Launaea acanthodes was correctly identified as Lactuca orientalis. The study supported the inclusion of L. intybacea, L. massauensis and L. nudicaulis within section Microrhynchus, the separation of L. angustifolia and L. arabica in two distinct species. Two biotypes of L. nudicaulis were morphologically differentiated. Launaea fragilis subsp. fragilis showed considerable plasticity and variability in various characters; therefore, L. tenuiloba was considered to be merely an ecotype of L. fragilis. Launaea mucronata comprises two subspecies; cassiniana and mucronata, differentiated by their pappus type, conspicuous secondary ribs of the inner achenes, and the number of spines on the polar area of pollen grains. Clematis, a widely distributed genus in Ranunculaceae, is one of the most difficult groups of taxa in the family from a taxonomic point of view. A comprehensive study on achene morphology and the anatomy of 19 taxa of Clematis from Korea was carried out using scanning electron and light microscopy to evaluate the taxonomic significance of achene characters. Clematis achenes are elliptical, obovate or fusiform in shape, light yellow or brown to black in color and completely or sparsely covered with hairs. The permanent style is elongated and plumose in all the studied taxa except C. brachyura. We found that the size, indument, permanent style, surface sculpture, shape in cross-section, and nature and thickness of the exocarp, and endocarp were valuable achene features for species delimitation and may contribute to the unraveling of the taxonomic problems in the genus Clematis. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA) indicated that the quantitative achene variables among the species were highly significant (p < 0.001). Principal component analyses based on seven quantitative characters and UPGMA (unweighted pair-group method with arithmetic mean) analysis based on seven quantitative and 18 qualitative characters also signify the utility of achene features for taxonomic discriminations of the Clematis taxa within the genus. Similar to other morphological characters in the genus Clematis, achene morphological and anatomical characters with the limited taxonomic value alone cannot be expected to resolve the infrageneric relationships but certain achene features combined with other morphological features could be useful as an alternative means of determining the infrageneric relationships within the genus.
