In the business context, human resource management is essential to achieve maximum productivity, making it necessary to build high performance work systems. The aim of this study was to know the current state of human resources practices integrated into the high performance work systems of tourism companies and to understand the relationship between HPWSs and staff turnover, absenteeism, productivity and accident rate, as well as the black box variables that mediate this relationship. A systematic review of literature published between 2019 and 2024 (April) was carried out with PRISMA 2020 statement, based on a bibliographic search in databases and which, after applying eligibility criteria, allowed for the compilation of 18 studies. The academic interest of this review stands out because it is a novel topic, postulating it as a starting point for future theoretical and empirical research that would serve to develop a more robust theory and make visible a topic of great impact for companies in the tourism sector, many of them family businesses, as well as for their workers. This study aims to examine the evolution of the literature related to human capital in the field of tourism, specifically addressing the gender dimension. It represents a novel approach to this field of study and promises to offer new perspectives and contribute to the debate on tourism management with equality of opportunity. To achieve this aim, a quantitative methodology was applied through a bibliometric analysis of 234 articles, published between 2020 and 2024, extracted from Web of Science and Scopus. Among the main results, a high level of collaboration and research on the topic, with a stable and growing trend, was observed. Influential journals include the Journal of Sustainable Tourism, Sustainability, and the International Journal of Contemporary Hospitality Management. Future research is suggested to focus on the impact of the female human capital on tourism management, as well as a qualitative analysis for a better understanding of the topic. Full article

The ecological crisis that emerged rapidly in the 2000s because of vertiginous economic growth is still one of the dominant themes today. This unprecedented phenomenon has led to intense political-economic and social tensions over reconsidering the priorities of “post-industrial capitalism”. The main issues here are increasing inequalities in the distribution of resources and high dependence on non-renewable energies. In response, valuable policies have been developed with the intention of creating new economic models that satisfy environmental and ecological needs. However, the literature shows that the effectiveness of the global schemes proposed to achieve sustainable behaviors and techniques has been very low. In the hospitality sector, particularly in the food and beverage department, pollution and consumption of scarce resources remain issues. In this paper, we propose a structural framework for analyzing the commitment of hotels regarding sustainable practices in the F&B department, centered on standards set by relevant institutions. To enhance understanding, an extension of the theory of planned behavior (TPB) is proposed. The use of this conceptual framework will enable us firstly to gain a perception of how a hotel acts through its F&B administrator in the light of relevant standard practices. Secondly, it will allow us to understand the role of the common internal and external factors behind the theories describing the behavior adopted. In this way, this research aims to contribute to a global understanding of the factors that influence the commitment of hotels to sustainable practices in their F&B department. Full article

Although in many cases community-based tourism does not take place within the formal parameters of the company, your practices encompass responsible tourism activities that allow the active participation of the community, from an intercultural perspective, adequate management of the natural and cultural heritage, based on a principle of equity and the distribution of local benefits. The aim of this research was to understand the relationship between the actions and dimensions of social responsibility carried out in communities that practice community-based tourism, with the aim of establishing appropriate indicators of organisation and sustainable local development. However, no studies linking community-based tourism and social responsibility were found in the literature, as the latter was always related to formal organisations. In order to achieve this objective, a interview was carried out from an exploratory qualitative perspective. The data analysed made it possible to understand the level of SR of the actors in rural communities and its close relationship with the social responsibility actions carried out in the practice of community-based tourism. Indicators of local organisation and development that influence the sustainability of rural communities as tourist destinations were also detected. Full article

There is a growing interest in research related to Airbnb, and one theme that has stood out is the analysis of the consumer experience. This study aimed to analyse the feelings expressed in the online evaluation of users on the Airbnb platform in Fortaleza, capital of Ceará, Brazil. The methodology was developed through quali-quantitative research, a documentary research procedure, and data collection regarding the accommodation offers available on the platform. A total of 2353 reviews in 2019 and 2020 related to 506 accommodation offers were analysed through manual coding with the aid of NVivo software. The results evidenced the positivity of the evaluations, and that positive comments presented fewer characters while negative evaluations presented more details. It was identified that there were differences in the percentages of positive and negative evaluations when differentiated by other factors such as gender of the user (women evaluated more positively and intensely), type of host (superhost evaluations were more positive), type of offer (for entire places, the positive polarity was lower than the private room and shared room types), and location (the positive polarity was higher in residential neighbourhoods than in tourist neighbourhoods). Methodologically, this study contributes by illustrating how a set of evaluations can be analysed and interpreted in studies on the accommodation service. Full article

The widespread use of the Internet has changed consumer buying behavior, especially among tourists, considering the intangibility of the tourist product. Although globally the modern tourist is a consumer of the new online market, there is a lack of studies addressing the level of development of the hotel business in relation to online bookings by residents of tourist destinations. Furthermore, this article analyzes the factors that impact the use of e-commerce by these residents in the acquisition of tourist accommodation services. A conceptual model was adopted, using the constructs “social influence” and “price” of the unified theory of acceptance and use of technology 2 (UTAUT2), also including “trust” and “perceived risk”. An electronic questionnaire was used to collect data from a sample of 195 residents of Fortaleza, Ceará, Brazil. Data analysis included descriptive statistics, exploratory factor analysis, Fisher’s exact test, and multiple linear regression. The results show that price and social influence are the most significant constructs associated with booking a hotel online, while trust does not influence the use of the Internet. As practical implications, the findings of this study provide important information for hotel managers, as they allow a better understanding of the profile of respondents who book online, as well as which factors influence online behaviors, contributing to increasing the knowledge of digital platforms in the consumer market and, consequently, the development of the hospitality sector. Even though the residents’ perceptions on the tourist activity have been thoroughly investigated in the last three decades, there are still few similar studies on destinations that are listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The research presented in this article assesses the perception of the residents of the municipality of Santiago de Compostela (Spain) regarding the implementation of a tourist tax. The study is based on 588 residents’ responses to a survey conducted through a questionnaire prepared by the authors. Owing to the exponential increase in the number of visitor arrivals to the city, the implementation of a tourist tax could be one of the strategies deployed to improve the tourist experience. It may also allow for a less negative interaction between residents and tourists. The analysis revealed the existence of three clusters: tax-skeptics, tax-enthusiasts, and tax-reactionaries. The results are consistent with the nature of a mature destination, with most respondents supporting the implementation of a tourist tax that could contribute to improving, amongst other things, the quality of the tourist destination for both visitors and residents. As an economic, social, and cultural activity, tourism shapes the relationship between visitors and local communities in tourist destinations. While tourism generates economic growth and employment opportunities for residents, its benefits come with a social cost. This article highlights the results of an online survey that was carried out at the beginning of 2021 in the seven major Galician cities along the Route of Santiago de Compostela (the Way of St. James) in Spain, which is a historical, natural, and cultural tourist attraction that is inscribed in the UNESCO’s World Heritage List in the category of cultural assets. The goal of the research work was to get to know first-hand the opinion of local communities about the positive and negative effects of tourism in their cities, on the Route of Santiago, and in the region of Galicia as a whole. Research work shows that residents’ perception of tourism leans toward the positive side, although it also reveals the need for tourism planners to involve host communities in tourism development. This research study about a World Heritage site should prove useful for political decision makers, tourism planners, and experts, both in Galicia and elsewhere. Full article
