It is with great pleasure and enthusiasm that I present you with the inaugural issue of Theoretical and Applied Ergonomics, a new journal designed to address ergonomics from a theoretical point of view, while highlighting innovative and technical aspects of the science. The three main areas of ergonomics (Physical, Cognitive, and Organizational) are well-established and produce a consistent stream of research. Ergonomics research is further expanding beyond these areas into multidisciplinary territory.
Ergonomics aims to understand and improve human interactions with products, equipment, environments, and systems. Its evolution clearly shows the many connections with other fundamental sciences such as engineering, psychology, biomechanics, physiology, neuroscience, and the humanities. This makes ergonomics a constantly evolving science in the face of technological, societal, economic, and environmental advances. Its fields of application extend to work, leisure, and other aspects of our daily lives, with the aim of optimizing the performance of systems while protecting the health, safety, and well-being of individuals.
The scope of Theoretical and Applied Ergonomics is intentionally large. We particularly invite contributions encompassing diverse and innovative methodologies that offer new perspectives and contribute to both scientific understanding, policy and technological solutions. We are particularly interested in work that crosses disciplinary frontiers, especially that which takes account of the increasingly connected world in which we live. For example, questions we could address include:
  • How is artificial intelligence set to transform workplaces?
  • What is the impact of mass data in the development of ergonomic solutions adapted to each employee to prevent musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and improve productivity?
  • What is the impact of virtual reality and augmented reality in the training, awareness, and prevention of musculoskeletal disorders?
  • How can computer vision monitor ergonomic practices and provide real-time corrective feedback?
  • What is the impact of wearable technologies on health and safety?
  • What role does the human nervous system play in work performance and workplace risks?
These are the kinds of questions that Theoretical and Applied Ergonomics sets out to explore, with a focus on their theoretical, methodological, technological, and political implications.
Our journal offers a wide variety of article types, including original research papers, technical notes, communications, review articles, and perspectives. By providing a platform for both in-depth analysis and cutting-edge research, we hope to meet the diverse interests of our readership, which includes academics, policymakers, and professionals working in public health, industry, economics, sociology, environmental sciences, and other fields.
On behalf of the founding editorial board, I thank you for your interest in Theoretical and Applied Ergonomics and look forward to seeing how our collective efforts can help the journal become a leading platform for ergonomics research in response to the challenges of our time.
