We are proud to announce that two distinguished members of our Editorial Board, Professor Bonaventura Clotet and Professor Jonathan Schapiro have received the highest Academic title of doctor honoris causa at the Carol Davila University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Bucharest, on 9 April 2013.
Professor Bonaventura Clotet was born in 1953 in Spain. At the age of 23 he obtained the Degree in Medicine and Surgery from the University of Barcelona, and one year later he became a Resident Doctor in Internal Medicine at the Vall d'Hebrón Hospital in Barcelona. In 1981 he obtained the PhD in Medicine and Surgery “cum laudem”.
He began his clinical work at the Emergency Unit of the Department of Medicine of Sant Pau Hospital in Barcelona, and later he worked for 10 years in the internal medicine department of the “Germans Trias i Pujol” University Hospital in Badalona, and since 1993 he has been the Head of HIV Section of the same Hospital. Also, he has been the Head of the Retrovirology Laboratory of the IrsiCaixa Foundation since 1996, and Co-Director of the HIVACAT Program of the same Foundation since 2006.
Professor Clotet has published over 500 scientific articles in prestigious scientific journals, having an accumulative Impact Factor of over 2500.
Born in 1960, Professor Jonathan Michael Schapiro received his Medical Degree from Ben Gurion University in Israel in 1987. He received his PhD Degree and during 1993-1996 he was a Postdoctoral Fellow at the Division of Infectious Diseases and Geographic Medicine, at Stanford University School of Medicine. He worked as a resident physician at the Department of Internal Medicine D, Rabin Medical Center, Petah Tikva, Israel, and since 1996 he has been the Director of HIV/AIDS at the National Hemophilia Center, Sheba Medical Center, Tel-Hashomer, Israel.
Professor Schapiro works both in the US and Israel. In the US, during 1999 and 2002 he was a Clinical Assistant Professor at the Department of Medicine, Stanford University School of Medicine, California, and since 2002 he has become Adjunct Clinical Assistant Professor at the same University. Between 2001 and 2003 he was a Member in the Antiviral Drugs Advisory Committee of the FDA. Presently, he is a member of the Scientific Committee of Stanford University School of Medicine Drug Resistance Database, California, USA, and a member of the Advisory Committee of the World Health Organization HIV Drug Resistance Network, Geneva, Switzerland.
