Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The manuscript, entitled "Solid-state fermentation from organic wastes: a new generation of bioproducts" has presented a review on SSF process to produce biological products. The present manuscript can't be considered for publication except major revision. The detailed comments are listed as follows.

 -        In the introduction section, it is necessary to state that the production of biological products is carried out by two methods of submerged fermentation and SSF and also what are the advantages and disadvantages of these approaches.

-        Authors must provide a comparative table regarding the production rate, yield or productivity with two SMF and SSF techniques and a quantitative comparison between these two methods. Only qualitative information is expressed in the tables 1-3. The superficial statements are also presented for Tables.

 -        Page 3. Line 86. “It can also be observed that fungi have a predominant role in SSF” Please explain the reason why fungi are more used. Could this issue be caused by the better growth of fungal hyphae on solid substrates as well as better mass transfer?

 -        Page 6. Line 201. please remove “Unfortunately, the reasons why one given waste works better than others are not unraveled yet.” It is unclear statement.

 -        Manufacturing of biofuels as the important bio-products through solid state fermentation is missing from the manuscript.

 -        “Conclusion” section should be replaced by “conclusions and future perspectives”. For instance, “In future, the application of SSF process could be developed …”.

Comments:

0. Moderate revision. 1. The novelty of this study should be inserted in the text clearly. 2. The advantages and disadvantages of this study should be investigated. 3. The mechanism of Solid-state fermentation from organic wastes should be studied in detail.   4. The stability of the generated bioproducts should be presented.
