Round 1

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

The topic of the article is very interesting. However, while the paper is certainly knowledgeable and well-written, the analysis lacks any originality. The author has a profound knowledge of Hegel's work, but it is not enough to elaborate and present a convincing argument. At times, the analysis gives the impression of nothing more than a short introduction to Hegel's early thought on religion. This is a useful thing to do, but there is no argument. Finally, the author does not really engage with older or recent scholarship on the subject. The secondary bibliography is virtually absent in the References section.

Author Response

With my contribution, as the Academic Editor confirmed, I adhered exactly to the intention of the special issue (which can be found on the special issue's website), namely to present the emergence of the philosophy of religion in post-Kantian philosophy focusing the young Hegel, therefore, I will not react to your critics.

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

The article is well-researched and provides an intriguing discussion on Hegel's philosophy and understanding of religion. Living in a period of increasing religious skepticism and enquiry, Hegel (and Schleiermacher, as noted in the article sought to understand the relationship between rationality, and the seemingly irrational space of religion, faith and belief.

To this end, this article articulates well the formulation of understanding the rift between the physical and the metaphysical through concepts such as spirit, incarnation and the manifestation of transcendent consciousness through religion.

The article provides a good source of argument for those seeking to understand the philosophical undertones of Hegel and company on "faith seeking understanding".

Comments and Suggestions for Authors

Not a bad paper.

Perhaps the authors could have told, to an English reader, why early Hegel is worth studying.
