Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The study and overall presentation of results are coherent and well-organized. The theories that the study rests on are also in line with the research question. The conclusion can be improved and expanded, especially in line with the epistemics of religious belief, identity and the impact of hijra. The societal perception of hijra-use may not align with the identity impact and personal perception. Thus, this can be underlined to also focus on the times of uncertainty and how this applies.

I was also concerned with the interview data on whatsapp since this platform is not secure enough for carrying out field research and communicating with informants.

Reviewer 2 Report

An interesting article on an important topic.

I first note that Hijra is not a commonly known term and when I looked for a simple definition it became apparent the definition would be of little help.  Clearly, the term is evolving, which made the paper intriguing.  The authors nail the term down in the opening (lines 24-26) as one not of physical duty/activity but one of transformation.

Lines 48 and 49 offer a clear thesis.  The balance of the paragraph offers a clear theoretical orientation.

Lines 129-30 were noteworthy in clarity and relevance.  Many forums/scholars are attempting to explain the rise of xenophobic, racist and often profoundly conservative movements in several nations.  While not explicitly speaking on a geopolitical level the paper points toward this phenomenon.

151 another clear line pointing to larger issues.

Three related theories integrated into a more holistic paradigm seems to mark a solid lit review.  I was concerned the work was totally derivative of Hogg but I saw I was wrong with the three-theory approach.

Methodology was clear and made sense.  A qualitative project is a perfect selection for the research question.  I did see little value in the survey part but this was removed with the interviews and use of thematic analysis coding approach.

I valued the multiple quotes to illustrate each resultant theme.  Too often I see one mere quote to justify the claim.  Not so here.

The discussion was clear and modest in its claims.  No new information was inserted.  The claims wee not overly generalized.  The return t the three theoretical orientations was helpful and closed the loop.
