Comments and Suggestions for Authors

This is an interesting piece and I enjoyed reviewing it. It makes interested and cogent points. I do have a slight reservation that this was data collected in 2014 and it's contemporary-ness now we're in 2023 but I think there is enough here to warrant publication.  I also have a minor methodological point that asking in May 2014 about experience of sexual violence in the last 12 months would include some experiences of sexual violence at the Gezi Park protests and it doesn't seem from the article that there was disaggregation of sexual violence before the protests (and therefore as a motivating factor) and sexual violence at the protests.  Perhaps this could be acknowledged in the text?

There are some minor grammatical and typographical issues which need to be resolved before publication.

Author Response

Dear reviewer, thank you very much for the positive and constructive feedback.

1) We have incorporated the important and significant point accordingly by adding an addition to lines 510 to 514. Thanks for the advice.
"Even if the retrospective twelve-month period as well as the time of data collection may have resulted in a confounding of the motivation for participating in the protest and therefore cannot be concluded that the sexual discrimination experienced had a direct effect on participating in the protest, the results nevertheless clearly show the relevance of the different forms of sexual discrimination experienced in the reality of life."

This means we are complying with all of the review’s suggestions for improvement.

Abstract

The purpose of this article is well outlined in the abstract of the piece which is to understand the dynamics of the participation of women in the uprisings that took place in Gezi in Turkey in the year 2013. The role of the government, the lifestyle of women and the religious norms and values as factors that have contributed to the participation of women in the Gezi uprisings, is something that is mentioned in the abstract of the piece itself, along with details of the methods that have been adopted in order, to conduct the research for this article.

Introduction

The introductory section of this piece makes a reference to the fact that ideological and sociological movements are on the rise in different parts of the world and the movements on social equality and social participation are increasing in number with more and more people becoming conscious about their rights and privileges. There is a reference that is made in the introduction to this piece about the rise of movements in Turkey and how it is necessary to engage in a study of the type of dynamism and activism that is shown by women when they participate in such movements here.

Literature Review

The literature review for this article provides a history of social movements while the social and political factors contributing to women’s movements in Turkey and the extent to which the religion of such women and their value systems have played a role in influencing such participation is also something that is discussed in the review of literature. The gaps in the literature have been identified and the rationale for the study is something that has been made known towards the end of the literature review to explain why it is that this study deserved to be carried out.

Methodology

273 women who participated in the Gezi uprisings in Turkey 2013 were studied for this project. There was a quantitative approach that was approached for the purpose of this study, and the primary results have been combined with secondary research findings to arrive at an understanding of the study.

Results

The results of this study have been presented in a descriptive and a graphical format to show, the factors that contribute to the participation of women in the Gezi uprisings of Turkey in 2013, and what is responsible for the dynamism of women in such uprisings, in the essential sense of the term.

Conclusion

To conclude, this is a study which was conducted with a lot of finesse, and which demonstrated the extent to which women take part in the Gezi uprisings in Turkey, and the factors that contribute to such a dynamic participation of women.

Comments

This is a study which has been performed, using the quantitative approach alone. Future studies in this area, should be conducted using a qualitative approach to gain a more in-depth and valuable understanding of the study, and to acquire some more valuable perspectives with regard to the same.
