Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

The paper is a useful exercise to automatic ship navigation in fairway

but lacks the depth of literature review and the discussion of their implications in order to qualify for a proper academic journal paper.

Suggestions for improvement if the article is accepted for publication:

expand the introduction to the proposed topic,

Literature review must be widened with more references, specially in the nautical field, vessel maneuverability/capability, …,unmanned ships (suggestion).

I suggest, you can explain in more detail the integration of wind, current, and other environmental external forces

Changes in the “maps” and route WP, add final berth plan (preferably in a nautical source, chart/ENC),

add to the figures or data that were used in other publications, example, Figure X adapted from…,

The obtained results need more extended discussion.

Reviewer 2 Report

Review of “Research on support system for automatic ship navigation in fairway” by V.-S. Nguyen and V.-C. Do, submitted to Future Internet (futureinternet-426099)

The authors proposed a ship navigation support system that totally controls the track, speed, and heading in narrow fairway. As a reviewer, I guess the manuscript is understandable and well-written, and recommend the paper will be published in Future Internet after several minor improvements suggested below.

Comments:
1. L162: In addition to Hawkins et al. (1965), please add Tran and Im (2012)* that is easier to be referred.
2. Figs. 4, 9, 10: Add distance with units. Readers do not have a sense of spatial scale in this region.
3. Figs. 6, 8: Add units in horizontal axes. Enlarge characters in these figures.
4. Fig. 11 needs time unit (sec) in the horizontal axes. Indicate Pi s with respective times. Results of Figs. 10 and 11 look well. What/where is notable improvements in these figures compared to (expected) results that uses previous algorithms? Answers of this comment may help to describe your method distinguishable from old ones.
