Round 1

Reviewer 1 Report

Dear authors,

some notes are in the attached file. I believe that the article should refer to psychological research on how a person perceives different sounds. It would certainly make the article more interesting.

The authors have dedicated their research to sound sources influencing visiting experiences. This very unusual line of research is very interesting, as the type and levels of surroundings can highly influence the health and well-being of the users. The reviewer has found some control missing in the methodology section. 1. please add more data explaining why this particular site was chosen -  there must be a large number of islands/ scenic areas which would fulfil expectations - please give choice parameters. The reviewer is not convinced that only sounds shown in Table 1 are typical to Kulangsu. Please indicate why this particular set of sounds was chosen. In the Conclusion section, it would be worth mentioning how the analysis results could be used i.e. in tourism.

1. Is it possible to simplify (shorten) the title of the article. At the same time, the title could emphasize the increase in visitors as a sign of changes that are taking place in this place. However, I would like to leave this change at the disposal of the authors. I would not like such a change to cause bad emotions that result from ignorance of the meaning of place in Chinese culture.

2. In section 2.2, authors should write about the required sample size. Is the number of completed surveys a necessary sample for further conclusions?

3. Shouldn't graph 2 be constructed as a column? The current representation of the results shows direct links between the indicators.

4. The research is extensive and very comprehensive. At the end of Chapter 5, the authors mention flexible soundscape design strategies. It would be good to describe at least in a few sentences what such a strategy should consist of. This should be of great importance to people planning activities to improve the quality of the acoustic environment.
