Danielle Abrams’s performance art critically engages with late twentieth-century debates on race, queerness, and identity, positioning her as a vital figure in challenging monolithic and heteronormative structures of identity. Her early work Quadroon (1998), a live performance and four-channel video installation blending music, costume, gesture, and speech, compounds impassioned debates within the art world and beyond around the impact of multiculturalism on identity-based art, the invisibility of Jews of color and other marginalized members of the Jewish community, and the state of Black/Jewish relations in the United States following the Crown Heights riots of 1991. Abrams’s pieces frequently negotiate the tensions and intersections between her Black and Jewish familial heritage and her lesbian identity through the embodiment of semi-fictional personae grounded in family lore, self-perceptions, and cultural stereotypes. This paper explores how Abrams destabilizes the readability of “authentic” identities on the surface of the body in Quadroon via her adoption of personifications of her Black grandmother, her Jewish great grandmother, her identification as a butch lesbian, and her (unsuccessful) teenage attempt at passing for Greek. Pairing video recordings of each character with interludes from an unpublished performance script, I consider the anxieties of passing expressed in the personas of Dew Drop and Janie Bell, and through the lens of Abrams’s diaries, pose Butch in the Kitchen’s potential as an indefinite body to queer socially imposed constructions of monolithic and essentialist identity. The relationship between what and how individuals eat and their overall and long-term health is non-controversial. However, for decades, food and nutrition discussions have often been highly medicalized. Given the significant impact of poor nutrition on health, broader discussions about food should be integrated into routine patient history taking. We advocate for an expansion of the current, standard approach to patient history taking in order to include questions regarding patients’ ‘foodlife’ (total relationship to food) as a screening and baseline assessment tool for referrals. We propose that healthcare providers: (1) routinely engage with patients about their relationship to food, and (2) recognize that such dialogues extend beyond nutrition and lifestyle questions. Mirroring other recent revisions to medical history taking—such as exploring biopsychosocial risks—questions about food relationships and motivators of eating may be essential for optimal patient assessment and referrals. We draw on the novel tools of ‘foodlife’ ethnography (developed by co-author ethnographer J.J.L., and further refined in collaboration with the co-authors who contributed their clinical experiences as a former primary care physician (D.M.E.), registered dietitian (J.W.M.), and diabetologist (H.Z.)) to model a set of baseline questions for inclusion in routine clinical settings. Importantly, this broader cultural approach seeks to augment and enhance current food intake discussions used by registered dietitian nutritionists, endocrinologists, internists, and medical primary care providers for better baseline assessments and referrals. By bringing the significance of food into the domain of routine medical interviewing practices by a range of health professionals, we theorize that this approach can set a strong foundation of trust between patients and healthcare professionals, underscoring food’s vital role in patient-centered care. Food waste originating in households in the Czech Republic is an important but unknown issue. Due to the country’s membership among the most developed economies (European Union, OECD) and its commitments towards UN Sustainable Development Goals, the government must, inter alia, significantly reduce household food waste. However, reliable data and indicators based on internationally agreed approaches and methods have been missing so far. This article brings original results from a survey comprising over 400 Czech households based on the kitchen diaries method showing that, on average, surveyed households discarded 2.6 kg (1.1 kg per capita) weekly. After extrapolation, the total food waste was estimated to be 135.7 kg per household or 57.1 kg per capita annually. Half of the total food waste from surveyed households was thrown into municipal bins for mixed waste. Despite a relatively low total food waste stream, its disposal needs substantial improvement to meet national and international regulations as well as sustainability criteria. Full article

The usual perception of consumers regarding water consumption is that their bills do not match their actual water consumption. However, this mismatch has been insufficiently studied; particularly for cases related to specific water-use patterns, water conservation practices, and user socio-demographics. In this study, a total of 776 households in 16 villages situated in the rural Wei River Basin are investigated to address the gap in the literature. Questionnaires and 3-day water diaries are used for data collection and comparison. Results show that significant relations exist between perceived water consumption and actual water consumption. Participants have different perceptions of specific water-use patterns. Participants tend to underestimate their outdoor and kitchen water consumption and overestimate their indoor water consumption. Females and elder consumers accurately estimate their water consumption, whereas consumers with high education levels and incomes underestimate their actual water consumption. The groups who can accurately estimate water consumption have better water conservation consciousness and water conservation practices than those who underestimate their water consumption. The huge disparities highlighted by the results suggest that community policies and programs to improve public water conservation consciousness or practices must be implemented to enhance consumer understanding of water consumption.
