The Delta and Omicron variants’ system was used in this research study to replicate the complex process of the SARS-CoV-2 outbreak. The generalised fractional system was designed and rigorously analysed in order to gain a comprehensive understanding of the transmission dynamics of both variants. The proposed dynamical system has heredity and memory effects, which greatly improved our ability to perceive the disease propagation dynamics. The non-singular Atangana–Baleanu fractional operator was used to forecast the current pandemic in order to meet this challenge. The Picard recursions approach can be used to ensure that the designed fractional system has at least one solution occupying the growth condition and memory function regardless of the initial conditions. The Hyers–Ulam–Rassias stability criteria were used to carry out the stability analysis of the fractional governing system of equations, and the fixed-point theory ensured the uniqueness of the solution. Additionally, the model exhibited global asymptotically stable behaviour in some conditions. The approximate behaviour of the fatal virus was investigated using an efficient and reliable fractional numerical Adams–Bashforth approach. The outcome demonstrated that there will be a significant decline in the population of those infected with the Omicron and Delta SARS-CoV-2 variants if the vaccination rate is increased (in both the symptomatic and symptomatic stages). Analysis of QTLs and Candidate Genes for Tassel Symptoms in Maize Infected with Sporisorium reilianum

Heat smut is a fungal soil-borne disease caused by Sporisorium reilianum, and affects the development of male and female tassels. Our previous research found that the tassel symptoms in maize infected with Sporisorium reilianum significantly differed in inbred lines with Sipingtou blood, and exhibited stable heredity over time at multiple locations. In this study, cytological analysis demonstrated that the cellular organization structures of three typical inbred lines (Huangzao4, Jing7, and Chang7-2) showed significant discrepancies at the VT stage. QTLs that control the different symptoms of maize tassels infected with Sporisorium reilianum were located in two F2 populations, which were constructed using three typical inbred lines. The BSA (bulked segregation analysis) method was used to construct mixed gene pools based on typical tassel symptoms. The QTLs of different symptoms of maize tassels infected with Sporisorium reilianum were detected with 869 SSR markers covering the whole maize genome. The mixed gene pools were screened with polymorphic markers between the parents. Additional SSR markers were added near the above marker to detect genotypes in partially single plants in F2 populations. The QTL controlling tassel symptoms in the Huangzao4 and Jing7 lines was located on the bin 1.06 region, between the markers of umc1590 and bnlg1598, and explained 21.12% of the phenotypic variation with an additive effect of 0.6524. The QTL controlling the tassel symptoms of the Jing7 and Chang7-2 lines was located on the bin 2.07 region, between the markers of umc1042 and bnlg1335, and explained 11.26% phenotypic variation with an additive effect of 0.4355. Two candidate genes (ZmABP2 and Zm00001D006403) were identified by a conjoint analysis of label-free quantification proteome sequencings. Full article

Risk Factors Attributable to Hypertension among HIV-Infected Patients on Antiretroviral Therapy in Selected Rural Districts of the Eastern Cape Province, South Africa

Background: Antiretroviral therapy has improved HIV patients’ quality of life and life expectancy. However, complications have emerged in the form of hypertension. In the rural Eastern Cape, there is minimal information about HIV-infected people. The current study intended to evaluate the factors associated with hypertension in HIV-infected individuals receiving antiretroviral therapy in rural areas of South Africa’s Eastern Cape. Methods: For this cohort study, HIV-positive people taking antiretroviral therapy aged 15 and up were recruited at random from several rural locations in the Eastern Cape. Using Cox univariate and multivariate analyses, the key predictors of hypertension were found. Results: Of the total participants (n = 361), 53% of individuals had hypertension. In the Cox multivariate model, patients that had hypertension heredity, BMI ≥ 25 kg/m2, eGFR < 60 mL/min/1.73 m2, advanced and severe CD4 counts, 1TFE and 1T3E regimens, and the male gender were found to be at greater risk of hypertension. Conclusions: The findings of this study indicate that hypertension is a prevalent concern among HIV patients receiving antiretroviral therapy. HIV patients should have their blood pressure checked regularly, and they should be screened for high blood pressure and given treatment for it. Full article

Variation, adaptation, heredity and fitness, constraints and affordances, speciation, and extinction form the building blocks of the (Neo-)Darwinian research program, and several of these have been called “Darwinian principles”. Here, we suggest that caution should be taken in calling these principles Darwinian because of the important role played by reticulate evolutionary mechanisms and processes in also bringing about these phenomena. Reticulate mechanisms and processes include symbiosis, symbiogenesis, lateral gene transfer, infective heredity mediated by genetic and organismal mobility, and hybridization. Because the “Darwinian principles” are brought about by both vertical and reticulate evolutionary mechanisms and processes, they should be understood as foundational for a more pluralistic theory of evolution, one that surpasses the classic scope of the Modern and the Neo-Darwinian Synthesis. Reticulate evolution moreover demonstrates that what conventional (Neo-)Darwinian theories treat as intra-species features of evolution frequently involve reticulate interactions between organisms from very different taxonomic categories. Variation, adaptation, heredity and fitness, constraints and affordances, speciation, and extinction therefore cannot be understood as “traits” or “properties” of genes, organisms, species, or ecosystems because the phenomena are irreducible to specific units and levels of an evolutionary hierarchy. Instead, these general principles of evolution need to be understood as common goods that come about through interactions between different units and levels of evolutionary hierarchies, and they are exherent rather than inherent properties of individuals.
