This study explores Eastern Orthodox aesthetics through a parallax lens, situating it at the intersection of theology, anthropology, and cultural practice to move beyond the icon-centric discourse. It examines how Orthodox aesthetics, rooted in the theological vision of beauty as divine disclosure, manifests in liturgical ethos, material culture, and secular artistic expression. The analysis draws on Christos Yannaras’ ethos of liturgical art, Chrysostomos Stamoulis’ exercise in philokalic aesthetics, and Timothy Carroll’s ethnographic material ecology of Orthodox Christianity, revealing beauty as an ontological event of communion and transformation. A parallax shift to Dionysis Savvopoulos’ lyrics uncovers an aesthetic eschatology, or an aesthetics of eschatology, where Orthodox themes of resurrection and festivity permeate non-ecclesial Greek culture. Employing a comparative, interdisciplinary methodology, the study integrates theological reflection, ethnographic insights, and cultural analysis. It concludes that Orthodox aesthetics is a dynamic field where beauty, truth, and eschatological hope converge, extending beyond the sanctuary into everyday practices and popular art—“incarnated” in material reality. This transdisciplinary approach reconfigures Orthodox aesthetics as a theological anthropology, offering fresh perspectives on its role in contemporary discourse and its diffusion into the public sphere, while advocating for material culture as a critical lens for future exploration. Background: Navigating inpatient care can be complex and distressing for patients, particularly as they grapple with the emotional and physical changes brought about by their condition. Ensuring the preservation of human dignity during this period is vital, as it directly influences an individual’s self-esteem and overall quality of life, most prominently during end-of-life care. The hospital milieu and the behaviour of healthcare professionals can significantly affect a patient’s dignity. This paper scrutinized the concept of human dignity in inpatient care, with a primary emphasis on its theological, social, and regional context, drawing particularly on the Eastern Orthodox tradition and the central European, specifically Slovakian, context. Methodology: This study engaged respected authors in theology, social science, and healthcare to present an enriched understanding of the bio-psycho-social-spiritual components of human dignity. The analysis incorporated a blend of theological concepts, empirical findings, and regional insights to provide a nuanced perspective on dignity conservation. Results: The study illuminates the criticality of preserving human dignity from a multi-dimensional perspective, promoting patient autonomy, acknowledging their cultural and spiritual beliefs, and confronting societal attitudes and practices. It draws from theological doctrines and the European Charter of Patient’s Rights to advocate for a nuanced, dignity-conserving approach to patient care. Case studies and practical strategies for preserving human dignity in palliative care contexts, based on clinical guidelines, empirical studies, and theological writings, are presented. Conclusions: This study highlights the integral role of human dignity from both theological and practical perspectives in inpatient care, advocating for a comprehensive, patient-centered approach to care that values the individual’s bio-psycho-social-spiritual facets. It underscores the necessity for a collaborative commitment between healthcare providers, patients, and their families to foster a milieu that unconditionally supports the dignity of the ill person. This paper draws upon over three years’ research among Eastern Orthodox (principally Antiochian and Greek) communities in London and Mount Athos, Greece. This research came to engage theology quite heavily as part of the ethnographic facts of the fieldsites. This paper reviews some of the existing ways that theology (as both discipline and practice) relate to ethnographic enquiry, particularly as it has arisen in the dialogue with the Anthropology of Christianity and frames this in light of the historical development of Anthropology and its relationship to theology and Christianity. The paper then advances a methodological argument, in favour of further means of relation, specifically in terms of theology as a cultural artefact. Drawing on local practices of liturgical theology and Eastern Orthodox forms of allegorical interpretation, I argue for the inclusion of theological insight and practice within the social scientific study of religion. Working in an Orthodox setting requires the investigation of liturgical theology and brings to light important aspects of the relationship between temporal and sempiternal domains of action. Particularly as it relates to liturgical theology and the practices of interpretation, ethnographic enquiry into Orthodox theology asks for a reconsideration of social scientific methods of analysis and representation.
