In recent years, the morbidity and mortality rates caused by stings and bites of poisonous species have been constant in Mexico; such a phenomenon has been emphasized due to the dominance or modification of the natural geosystem. The modification in the availability of water resources has caused changes in the climate, extreme droughts, and floods that influence the distribution of species, generating risks where they did not occur before. With the aforementioned, it is important to identify risky points through the development of new cartography in the country, which allows an analysis from a spatial and geostatistical perspective. Based on the number of victims of stings or bites, there will be a sharp increase in exposure to poisonous animals where the distribution of these species overlaps with areas of high vulnerability as well as social and natural contact in Mexico. The aim of this study is to model the anthropogenic risk of poisonous species in Mexico in a spatial way (data from 2010–2017). The spatial analyses of this study were carried out throughout the Mexican territory and focused on species such as coral snakes, rattlesnakes, scorpions, and centipedes. The variables of vulnerability, danger, and exposure were considered to create a generalized risk model using the core area alternative in the zonation program, allowing a spatial analysis. The methodology consisted of six stages: (1) the identification of threats and records collected from chosen poisonous animals; (2) obtaining risk models by using the Zonation software that summarized all the species distribution modeling (SDM); (3) the development of a general anthropogenic vulnerability indicator; (4) obtaining the general exposure model with the index of accessibility to medical services; (5) obtaining risk models; and (6) the validation of risk models with morbidity and mortality rates by obtaining geostatistical models. The highlighted risk areas are the Pacific Ocean coast from Southern Sinaloa to the border of Michoacán, a corridor from central Veracruz to northern Oaxaca, central Guerrero, northern Michoacán, and northwestern Nuevo León. Coral reefs reach their southernmost limits in the southwestern Indian Ocean in Maputaland, South Africa. Here, we investigate the recent global coral bleaching event of 2016, the thermal dynamics of these marginal high-latitude reefs and the potential environmental factors regulating the responses of coral communities. Pre-, peak- and post-bleaching surveys of over 9850 coral colonies from 29 genera were undertaken over 3 years across 14 sites spanning 120 km of coastline using point-intercept and visual bleaching index survey methodologies. Bleaching data were related to several environmental variables including temperature, degree heating weeks (DHW), depth, latitude, and upwelling intensity. These reefs have experienced a history of relatively low thermal stress based on DHW. Long-term in situ temperature records nevertheless showed no obvious trend of increase. In situ temperatures also displayed poor relationships, with temperatures predicted by the Representative Concentration Pathway models. Mild coral bleaching with no significant mortality was recorded across sites with taxon-specific bleaching responses evident. Latitude and cumulative daily DHW were significantly related to the bleaching index whereas depth and interactions of depth with latitude and DHW were not. While upwelling of cooler water may offer some refuge to coral communities, especially in the Central and Southern Reef Complexes where it is more pronounced, this may only be transient as the upwelled water may also experience some degree of warming in future, thereby limiting such protection from global warming. Sri Lanka, an island nation located off the southeast coast of the Indian sub-continent, has an unappreciated diversity of corals and other reef organisms. In particular, knowledge of the status of coral reefs in its northern region has been limited due to 30 years of civil war. From March 2017 to August 2018, we carried out baseline surveys at selected sites on the northern coastline of the Jaffna Peninsula and around the four largest islands in Palk Bay. The mean percentage cover of live coral was 49 ± 7.25% along the northern coast and 27 ± 5.3% on the islands. Bleaching events and intense fishing activities have most likely resulted in the occurrence of dead corals at most sites (coral mortality index > 0.33). However, all sites were characterised by high values of diversity (H’ ≥ 2.3) and evenness (E ≥ 0.8). The diversity index increased significantly with increasing coral cover on the northern coast but showed the opposite trend on the island sites. One hundred and thirteen species of scleractinian corals, representing 16 families and 39 genera, were recorded, as well as seven soft coral genera. Thirty-six of the scleractinian coral species were identified for the first time on the island of Sri Lanka. DNA barcoding using the mitochondrial cytochrome oxidase subunit I gene (COI) was employed to secure genetic confirmation of a few difficult-to-distinguish new records: Acropora aspera, Acropora digitifera, Acropora gemmifera, Montipora flabellata, and Echinopora gemmacea.
