Separating Subjective from Objective Food Value in the Human Insula: An Exploratory Study Using Intracranial EEG

Background/Objectives: The human insula is a key structure implicated in integrating internal states and external food cues, yet its precise role remains unclear, in part due to the temporal limitations of neuroimaging techniques like fMRI. To address this gap, we conducted an exploratory study using an intracranial EEG (iEEG) to investigate how the insula encodes both the subjective and objective properties of food-related stimuli, and how this encoding is modulated by hunger and satiety. Methods: Eight patients with drug-resistant epilepsy undergoing a pre-surgical evaluation between 2017 and 2023 participated in this study. Depth electrodes implanted in the insular cortex recorded event-related potentials (ERPs) in response to visual food cues. The sessions were conducted in two prandial states (hungry and satiated). The subjective ratings (appetite and palatability) and objective nutritional values (e.g., calories, carbohydrates) were collected and analyzed using paired t-tests, MANOVAs, and partial correlations. Results: Hunger increased the ERP amplitudes within the 350–450 ms interval, consistent with the EPIC model and positive alliesthesia, while satiety unexpectedly enhanced the early responses (150–250 ms). Importantly, the neural activity related to nutritional values was largely uncorrelated with the subjective ratings, suggestive of distinct processing streams. The mid- and posterior insula showed greater sensitivity to both subjective and nutritional information than the anterior insula. Conclusions: These findings offer novel electrophysiological insights into how the insula differentiates between implicit and explicit food-related signals, depending on the homeostatic state. This work supports a dual-route model of food cue processing, and may inform interventions targeting insular activity in disordered eating. Full article

The study of exercise thermal sensation is more difficult than that of static thermal sensation in the human body. This work’s main purpose was to examine specific changes in human physiological parameters and subjective perceptions during the exercise process, especially around dynamic–static steps, and to assess exercise thermal sensation. Experiments were conducted in a climate chamber. A total of 16 subjects participated in two activities of different intensities on a treadmill, namely at 4.5 km/h and 6 km/h. The experimental procedure was set to static–dynamic–static. Skin temperature (Tsk), oral temperature (Tor), heart rate (HR), heart rate variability (HRV) parameters, and electrodermal activity (EDA) were measured at fixed time points, and thermal sensation values, thermal comfort values, and sweat feeling index were collected. The results showed complex changes in physiological indicators around the dynamic–static steps. Some important physio-logical indicators can be used as valid parameters for exercise thermal sensation models, such as Tsk, Tor, and EDA. This study highlighted that prediction models using average change and rate of change of measurements were better than using the original measurements. Our findings suggest that the exercise thermal sensation prediction models should be constructed according to the dynamic–static state and that psychological factors cannot be ignored. Full article

The indoor-outdoor connection provided by ventilation openings has been so far a limiting factor in the use of natural ventilation (NV), due to the apparent conflict between ventilation needs and the intrusion of external noise. This limiting factor impedes naturally ventilated buildings meeting the acoustic criteria set by standards and rating protocols, which are reviewed in this paper for residential buildings. The criteria reflect a general effort to minimize noise annoyance by reducing indoor sound levels, typically without a distinction based on a ventilation strategy. Research has developed a number of solutions, discussed here, that try to guarantee ventilation without compromising façade noise insulation, but, currently, none have been adopted on a large scale. This concept paper highlights the main limits of the current approach. First, a fragmented view towards indoor environmental quality has not included consideration of the following acoustic criteria: (i) how buildings are designed and operated to meet multiple needs other than acoustical ones (e.g., ventilation, visual, and cooling needs) and (ii) how people respond to multiple simultaneous environmental factors. Secondly, the lack of a perceptual perspective has led acoustic criteria to neglect the multiple cognitive and behavioral factors impinging on comfort in naturally ventilated houses. Indeed, factors such as the connection with the outside and the sense of control over one’s environment may induce “adaptive acoustic comfort” opportunities that are worth investigating. The mere use of different sound level limits would not be enough to define criteria tailored to the complex user–building interaction that occurs under NV conditions. More holistic and human-centered approaches are required to guarantee not only neutrally but even positively perceived indoor acoustic environments. For this reason, this paper considers this apparent conflict from a soundscape viewpoint, in order to expose still unexplored lines of research. By underpinning a perceptual perspective and by contextualizing it, the indoor soundscape approach provides a framework capable of overcoming the limits of the traditional noise control approach. This could provide the opportunity to foster a wider adoption of NV as a passive design strategy that enhances user health and well-being, while enabling low-cost, and low-energy cooling and ventilation, thereby contributing to current climate change challenges.
