Prof. Dr. Shen is currently a Professor at the School of Earth Sciences and Engineering, Nanjing University, China. He previously served as a Researcher at the Nanjing Institute of Geology and Palaeontology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CAS) from 2001 to 2018, and was elected as an Academician of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in 2015.

Prof. Dr. Shen has received numerous accolades and grants, including the National Science Foundation for Distinguished Young Scholars, with his outstanding innovative research group receiving continuous priority funding for nine years. He has also led significant projects such as the Ministry of Science and Technology's 973 Basic Research Program (2006) and the National Science Foundation's Major Projects (2017, 2023). His achievements have been recognized with the International Commission on Stratigraphy's Individual Gold Medal (2019), the Second Prize of the National Natural Science Award (2010, ranked second), the Outstanding Returned Scholars Achievement Award (2002), the Li Siguang Geological Science Award (2015), and the Ho Leung Ho Lee Prize (2022).

From 2012 to 2020, Prof. Dr. Shen served as President of the International Subcommission on Permian Stratigraphy, and since 2020 he has held the position of Vice Chair of the International Commission on Stratigraphy (ICS).

Primary research areas:

  • Mass extinctions and their causes: utilizing big data, supercomputing, and artificial intelligence to investigate deep-time biodiversity evolution and quantitative paleogeography;
  • Paleoenvironment and paleoclimate studies: applying biogeochemical analytical techniques to reconstruct ancient environments and climates, combined with digital simulations;
  • Permian stratigraphy and systematic paleobiology: focusing on Permian stratigraphy and conducting systematic paleobiological and evolutionary studies of brachiopods and conodonts based on fossil records.

We are honored to welcome Prof. Dr. Shen to the Advisory Board of Stratigraphy and Sedimentology. His outstanding scientific leadership and deep engagement with the international stratigraphic community will greatly support the journal’s development and academic vision.
