I am Mahdi Bodaghi, Associate Professor of Smart Materials and Manufacturing in the School of Science and Technology at Nottingham Trent University. My research centres on developing smart materials, meta-materials, robotic materials, bio-composites and designs, and exploiting their capabilities, along with 3D/4D printing technologies, to create innovative devices for automotive, aerospace, construction, and biomedical applications.

1. What appealed to you about the journal that made you want to take on the role of Section Editor-in-Chief?
The journal’s commitment to innovative research, interdisciplinary collaboration, and advancing smart manufacturing technologies greatly aligns with my research interests and academic values. The commitment to high-quality research made the role very appealing.
2. What is your vision for the Section?
My vision is to ensure a rigorous peer-review process, enhance research quality, and help the journal achieve Web of Science indexing by publishing focused and impactful papers.
3. What does the future of this field of research look like?
The future will see increased integration of smart materials and design, robotics, and 3D/4D printing technologies. It will drive transformative advancements across automotive, aerospace, civil, and biomedical sectors.
4. What do you think of the development of open access in the publishing field?
Open access accelerates knowledge dissemination, enhances global visibility of research, and promotes collaborative innovation by making findings freely accessible worldwide. It also supports equity, diversity, and inclusion (EDI) practises.
