A noteworthy review on “Comprehensive Insights into Sarcopenia in Dialysis Patients: Mechanisms, Assessment, and Therapeutic Approaches”, written by Prof. Dr. Davide Bolignano and others, has been published in Medicina’s “Urology & Nephrology” Section. We would like to thank all the authors for their invaluable contributions and invite you to enjoy and review this paper, hoping that it will bring you inspiration.
The following is the introduction provided by Prof. Dr. Davide Bolignano, the Section Editor-in-Chief of the “Urology & Nephrology” Section:
“Sarcopenia, a condition marked by the progressive loss of muscle mass, strength, and function, is a growing concern among patients undergoing chronic dialysis therapy. Despite its high prevalence, it remains underdiagnosed due to inconsistent diagnostic criteria and the complexities of assessing body composition in this population. This article summarizes the multifactorial causes of sarcopenia, such as chronic inflammation, metabolic disturbances, and malnutrition, and highlights the severe impact on patient outcomes, including frailty and increased mortality. It emphasizes the critical need for early identification, routine screening, and a tailored, multidisciplinary approach—incorporating exercise, nutrition, and pharmacological strategies—to improve the quality of life and clinical outcomes for dialysis patients”.
