Special Issue Information

Dear Colleagues,

Natural resources, such as water, fisheries, land, forests, and fossil fuels, provide immense benefits. However, the ways in which they are managed and developed for economic purposes also have important shortcomings and often disregard considerations of sustainability. Incentives to improve economic efficiency of resource allocation have been studied extensively, but much less attention has been devoted to understanding the impact of prevailing usage patterns on the long-term availability and quality of different types of natural resources and on the sustainability of the environment with which they interact. The need for changes in management practices and public policies in this regard is likely to arise from the well-recognized failure of our economic institutions to adequately safeguard the interests of future generations.

This Special Issue aims to contribute to the literature by bringing together original research articles on sustainable management and economic development of natural resources. Interdisciplinary research is particularly welcome. Conceptual research and empirical studies are solicited on topics including, but not limited to, the following areas:

  • Sustainable management of freshwater resources;
  • Sustainable economic development of fisheries and other aquatic resources under climate change;
  • Integrated watershed management and sustainability;
  • Role of forests in combating climate change;
  • Economics of fossil fuel development and environmental sustainability;
  • Sustainability and economics of alternative sources of energy;
  • Poverty alleviation and sustainable management of natural resources;
  • Sustainable management of coastal resources.

We look forward to receiving your contributions.
